This short, insightful book unpacks the obsession with Mesoamerica that permeates LDS scholarly work on the setting for the Book of Mormon. I take the position that the Hill Cumorah is in New York and all the geography flows from there. In my view, if the Hill Cumorah isn’t in New York, it doesn’t really matter where you think it is, whether that’s in Baja, Mesoamerica, Sri Lanka, or anywhere else. The Mesoamerican proponents take the position that the “real” Hill Cumorah is somewhere in southern Mexico and that Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery (and Joseph Fielding Smith) didn’t know what they were talking about. I disagree. Mesomania is my effort to understand the psychology that underlies their thinking.
