The Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon already has its 3rd Edition and over 35,000 printed copies in less than 5 years. We appreciate your valued support.
Thanks to David Hocking and Rod Meldrum with the Editorial Team
Managing Editor David Hocking, has spent countless hours beyond what one would think, to make the new 3rd Edition, worthwhile for those who have previous editions.
This New 3rd Edition “Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon” is here. Same great cover with 5 all-new pages, 8 new inserts with quotes or pictures, and dozens of edits and updates are included.
Additions for the 3rd Printing
In this new first printing of the 3rd Edition, Brother Hocking makes several notes from the Book of Jasher and the Book of Enoch passages, that validate that the presence and validity of the Plates of Brass had other Biblical-era records not found in the Bible record or Stick of Judah.
‘Phoenicia’
The ‘Phoenicia’ ship owned by Heartland Research with John Lefgren and Mike and Betty LaFontaine, is a 600 BC replica ship that was sailed by British Navy Captain Philip Beale over 30,000 nautical miles, proving a plausible route for Nephi and Mulek to sail from the Old World to North America.
Brother Hocking has updated route information on a map that may have brought Mulek to America. He added insight pages about Phoenician names showing up in the books of Mosiah and Alma after King Mosiah meets the people of Zarahemla, suggesting that it was a Phoenician ship that brought Zedekiah’s family with Mulek to the Land of Zarahemla near Montrose, Iowa. Also see an article from a BYU professor in 1973 that affirms a Heartland theory about the route and landing of Mulek and or Nephi, here: https://bookofmormonevidence.org/ross-t-christensen-of-byu-1973-plausible-mulek-routes-tunisia-gathering-2024/
Pictures of Phoenician boat anchors have been found in North America’s rivers and lakes add support Mulek arriving in one of their ships. Brother Hocking says, “The Mississippi, Ohio, Allegheny, and Missouri Rivers were the common waterways for transportation of the Hopewell culture.”
Interpreters
Did you know that the words, Urim and Thummim, do not appear in the translated text of the Book of Mormon? Instead these instruments are called “Interpreters” or Nephite interpreters. The term Urim and Thummim is found in the Bible but it is speaking of different tools, and are not the same tools Joseph found in the stone box with the gold plates.
Brother Hocking has included additional insight pages relating the use of the Interpreters (“these stones fastened to a breastplate” JSH 1:35), as the proper tools Joseph used to translate the ancient inscriptions.
A statement from Lucy Mack Smith who said Joseph marveled at the Interpreters, calling them as she quotes Joseph saying, “I have got the Key”, and how Lucy also said that Joseph “had these things (Spectacles & Breastplate), constantly upon his person.” This suggests Joseph may have worn the breastplate under his shirt, for constant usage during the translation period and to keep it out of sight. Joseph could have possibly hid the Interpreters (Spectacles) from Emma’s view and other scribes by using his farmers hat to block their view. (See picture above). Solar Eclipse Stone
Another insight page highlights a Michigan artifact that suggests it was made in a Book of Mormon time period. Brother Hocking says, “Measurement on the face of the stone shows the sun’s altitude from the earth’s horizon at an angle of 67 degrees (Fig. 1). This is precisely the angle that the NASA program connected to the Fourth Century solar eclipse.”
Spotted Bee Balm
Spotted beebalm has been located across from Nauvoo, which adds credence to having reduced fevers of the Nephites due to the change in climate. (Alma 46:40) “Descendants of Native Americans returned to a place where their ancestors 16 centuries ago may have grown and harvested Spotted Bee Balm (Monarda punctata var. villicaulis; a medicinal herb).” Special thanks to John Lefgren, Ph.D., Kevin Price, Ph.D. Photos courtesy of Kevin Price, Ph.D.), and Wayne May.
Another artifact, is shown (left) that was found in Alabama. It is a “Hopewell dated etched shell of an All Searching Eye symbol in a Hamsa five-fingered hand pattern. Moundsville was a village built using ‘Wall-Trench’ architecture.” Department of Research and Collections, University of Alabama Museums.

The Book of Mormon in North America
“The United States is the promised land foretold in the Book of Mormon—a place where divine guidance directed inspired men to create the conditions necessary for the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Elder L. Tom Perry Ensign Dec. 2012
Click the logo above for over 500 questions and over 500 answers to your questions!“The Book of Mormon reveals the inheritance of Joseph, son of Israel, who was not forgotten when land was distributed to the tribes of Israel. This was promised in the Abrahamic covenant. Because… Joseph’s inheritance was to be a land choice above all others. It was choice not because of beauty or wealth of natural resources, but because it was chosen to be the repository of sacred writings on golden plates from which the Book of Mormon would one day come. Choice because it would eventually host the world headquarters of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ in the latter days. And it was choice because it was a land of liberty for those who worship the Lord and keep His commandments” – President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, Yes, Mormons are Christians, Legends Library [2017], 60; emphasis added. Art by Ken Corbett
“The prophecies pertinent to this holy land of America were not just directed to the ancient saints, but those of our day as well, that we, too, might know of our responsibility to keep the Promised Land free from sin. Thus, knowing which land is the Promised Land is far more important than we might otherwise have supposed. Not only is such information vital to our understanding of where Book of Mormon activity took place, but learning that those activities took place in what has since become known as the United States of America is therefore critical to our very survival as a nation and as individuals who may just suffer untold misery in years to come if we allow the nation to become ripe in iniquity. The Lord’s decree that all who inhabit this promised land must serve Him or be wiped away is an everlasting decree, and just as pertinent to those of our day as it was to the Nephites or Jaredites, for according to the Lord Himself, this glorious land of America, the place of the New Jerusalem, is the land of promise, and who shall dispute His word.” From Ezra Taft Benson: Source
Previous Editions of the Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon
Here is some information about the previous two printings of the Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon. As you may remember, we printed our first 5,000 copies in Sept 2018. Those were gone in less than one month. We then had another 10,000 printed and available for Christmas 2018. Those were all sold by April of 2019. We had another 10,000 arrive in Nov. of 2019. We call this last shipment the 2nd Edition. The first 5,000 and first 10,000 we call the first printing.
You can see on the inside cover of your copy of the Annotated Book of Mormon, the following ways to determine what version you have. These editions below are now out of print.
Thanks to each of you, and your friends for supporting this amazing new 3rd edition of the Annotated Edition of the Book of Mormon. We feel grateful that so many wonderful people are reading the Book of Mormon. Pre-Order 3rd Edition Here
There are a few differences between the 2nd edition and the new 3rd edition I will explain. Obviously, the Book of Mormon text is the same, with only a couple minor corrections. Page numbers are the same up to page 561.
This painting is included in all versions. I love it.
“Truly this man was the Son of God” by Clark Kelley PricePrints Here: After Jesus was put upon the cross to be crucified, there was darkness over all the land, and when He died, there was a great earthquake. A Roman centurion standing guard at the foot of the cross witnessed these events and, sensing the reality of who was on the cross above him, testified, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Mark 15:39). The powerful testimony of the Savior spoken by this centurion who oversaw the Crucifixion now echoes through time and throughout eternity.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have received a spiritual witness that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and it is a second witness with the Bible as a Testament of Jesus Christ.
There is a difference of opinion with some members of the Church about the method of translation of the Book of Mormon by the Prophet Joseph Smith, but all active members of the Church believe the Book of Mormon was translated by the “Gift and Power of God.”
Scriptural Evidence vs Theorists New Narrative!
The Church and its Prophet and Apostles have not determined what the specific method of translation was, as just knowing the doctrine of the Church that the Book of Mormon is the word of God is most important, which I am in total agreement with. The Church is very supportive of anyone to have their own opinion about what instrument or method that Joseph Smith used. That is the beauty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are blessed with knowing the Doctrine’s of the Lord’s Church through Prophets and Apostles, but on our personal opinions we have our freedom to choose.
Peep Stone
I believe the old stories about Joseph being tied to the occult came from the 1834 anti-Mormon book “Mormonism Unvailed” by E.D. Howe. Most of this was due to the book talking about the rock in the hat and some sort of evil Joseph must have been doing. I grew up in the sixties and my mother told me the peep stone in a hat was evil and I believed her. The majority of the Church agreed, but the church didn’t discuss the way the Urim and Thummim looked nor did they speak much about the Interpreters. We all just said, Joseph translated by the gift and power of God. [FYI In the Book of Mormon the term Urim and Thummim is never used. Instead they are always called “Interpreters”] But now in todays world, many people are trying to make Joseph and his method of peep stones evil, or strange again. That is why I share evidence in the scriptures to verify that Joseph only used as the scriptures say, “these two stones fastened to a breastplate” JSH 1:35, or he used the Interpreters, or he used the Urim and Thummim to translate, all three meaning the same thing.
Names of the same Instrument used to Translate the Book of Mormon
Three Instruments found in the Hill Cumorah
There are many names for the instrument used by Joseph Smith to translate the gold plates with. There seem to be only three people (Joseph, Oliver, and Lucy Smith who held and described the instruments under a linen) who actually saw all three instruments that were in the Hill Cumorah. There is much speculation on what to call those items. Joseph and Oliver of course are the first hand witnesses. In the Book of Mormon there is only one name for the instrument, and that is “INTERPRETERS.” No other word is found in the Book of Mormon which is speaking about the instrument of “two stones fastened to a breastplate.”
Various names of the proper instruments used, usually using a plural. 1- Interpreters (Word found in the Book of Mormon, and PGP) 2- Directors (Alma 37:21, 24. In 1920 “Interpreters” was changed to “Directors” in the Book of Mormon) 3- Urim and Thummim (Word found in the D&C, PGP, and the Old Testament, 4 times in The Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith in the preface of the BofM) Urim and Thummim in the Old Testament is a different one than the one found in the Book of Mormon. 4- The Key (Lucy Mack Smith) 5- These stones, fastened to a breastplate 6- Two stones which were fastened into the two rims of a bow (Words found similar in many places) 7- Spectacles (JSP Letterbook 1/11) 8- Glasses (Luck Mack Smith, 9- 2 smooth 3 cornered diamonds set in glass and the glass was set in silver bows. (Lucy Mack Smith) 10- Two transparent stones, resembling glass, set in silver bows (Oliver Cowdery)
Did the translation instrument come from the Brother of Jared (Ether 4:5), or a stone Joseph found in a well when he was young?
These words are never found in association with the translation in scripture: 1- Peep Stone 2- Seer Stone 3- Seer Stones 4- Seer’s Stone 5- Stone in the hat 6- Stone 7- Single Stone 8- Gazelem (Stone, mentioned in Alma 37:23 but does not refer to translation)*
*Blog about the scripture, “Gazelem, a stone”, which really means, “Joseph Smith, a Seer”
Many Physical Instruments
“Some people have balked at this claim of physical instruments used in the divine translation process, but such aids to facilitate the communication of God’s power and inspiration are consistent with accounts in scripture. In addition to the Urim and Thummim, the Bible mentions other physical instruments used to access God’s power: the rod of Aaron, a brass serpent, holy anointing oils, the Ark of the Covenant, and even dirt from the ground mixed with saliva to heal the eyes of a blind man.” Gospel Topic Essays, Book of Mormon Translation
150 Years Ago in the Church
Here is some information from Jonathan Neville that you will enjoy, as I believe it to be a very accurate explanation of attitudes early in the Church and today.
“For over 150 years, LDS Church leaders taught that Joseph Smith translated the Nephite plates with the Urim and Thummim. From the early 1830s, critics said that Joseph produced the Book of Mormon by either (i) reading words off a seer stone he put in a hat or (ii) reading a manuscript written by Solomon Spalding and edited by Sidney Rigdon. All three alternatives were set out in the 1834 book Mormonism Unvailed. When that book was released in October 1834, Oliver Cowdery responded by declaring unambiguously that Joseph translated the record with the Urim and Thummim. You can see Oliver’s declaration in the Pearl of Great Price, at the end of Joseph Smith-History, JSH 175n or in the Joseph Smith papers here: https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/history-1834-1836/50
You might think that Oliver’s declaration, which Joseph Smith helped write and specifically endorsed multiple times, would end the debate. But no. A few decades ago, some LDS historians decided it was time to deal with “all the evidence.” They started what has been called the “New Mormon History” to bring out some of the evidence that differed from, and contradicted, the traditional Church history narratives. Among these was SITH. [Stone in the Hat] Historians largely rejected the Spalding theory, so they focused on SITH vs U&T. [Urim and Thummim]. (Sending the Spalding theory into oblivion is one reason why everyone has overlooked the key role it played, as I’ve discussed before.) Rough Stone Rolling was a key part of the New Mormon History’s focus on SITH, but lots of people contributed. The historians in the Church History department largely embraced the New Mormon History as well as M2C[Mesoamerican 2-Cumorah Theory], and the result is the presentation of SITH in the Ensign (which I discussed here), the lesson manuals, the videos, etc. Several justifications have been proposed. Some have claimed that when Joseph and Oliver said or wrote “Urim and Thummim” they really meant the peep stone Joseph found in a well. That obviously contradicts both what they said and the historical record. Others claim Joseph used both, but that also contradicts both what Joseph and Oliver always said. Some say the “SITH sayers” were all liars who hated Joseph Smith, but that also contradicts the historical record. Besides, people on the other side just say Joseph and Oliver were liars. Stalemate. In a recent presentation, I summarized it this way, leading to my own conclusions. As I mentioned at the outset, a longer version of this is available here:” Jonathan Nevillehttps://www.bookofmormoncentralamerica.com/p/video-summary-of-sith-and-new-mormon.html
The Book of Mormon Is Tangible Evidence of the Restoration
Speaking about the method of Translation President Russell M. Nelson said, “Quite miraculous really, we have through the gift and power of God, we have a lot of suggestions about how it was done…” President Nelson also in this video demonstrated with a hat in his hands and spoke about the possible use of, as he said, “Urim and Thummim Seer Stones” as he is quoted as saying in the video titled. “The Book of Mormon Is Tangible Evidence of the Restoration.
The method of Translation is not a question about doctrine but about belief or opinion.
I don’t believe the stone in the hat was a proper method of translation.
The Brethren don’t often concern themselves with non-essential information. Doctrine and special witness of the Savior is most important to them, and it should be. Our wonderful Prophet and Apostles depend on historians and other quorums to research and answer historical questions, as they trust them as I do, to share accurate information.
No one except Joseph, Oliver and Lucy Mack Smith have ever seen the breastplate or the spectacles, so researchers could only share what their interpretation is of the information they have found. Many historians rarely look outside the box and there is always a hat or a rock nearby, so that makes it easy to demonstrate. Many historians also like to come up with new theories. Our Prophet is just re-sharing many things the historians have shared with him. That’s why the Brethren rarely say exactly how the translation happened as it is not revelation, so it really doesn’t concern them. I suppose it shouldn’t matter to most of us, as the spiritual confirmation that Joseph used the gift and power of God is the best answer. However, I enjoy searching for additional answers as Moroni said, “ye may know the truth of all things.”
The stone in the hat is not a fact but many historians and Church videos show it as the “New Narrative.” Nowhere in the scriptures does it even speak about it. Church Historians have developed consensus in their progressive thoughts, and they don’t like the traditionalist view. It’s just like the opinion that there is consensus that man causes global warming, so the intellectuals all agree on their non provable THEORY.
The stone in a hat is a theory. Our scriptures tell us many times Joseph used “these two stones fastened to a breastplate” JSH 1:35. And Oliver Cowdery in scripture said, “Day after day I continued, uninterrupted, to write from his mouth, as he translated with the Urim and Thummim, or, as the Nephites would have said, ‘Interpreters,’ the history or record called ‘The Book of Mormon.” JSH 1:75n. Latter-day Saints who testify the Scriptures are true, should be able to agree that Joseph used those items which were in the stone box at the Hill Cumorah. Plates, Breastplate, and Interpreters.
The details of this miraculous method of translation are still not fully known
Elder Russell M. Nelson said this. “As Oliver Cowdery testified a few years later: “These were days never to be forgotten—to sit under the sound of a voice dictated by the inspiration of heaven, awakened the utmost gratitude of this bosom! Day after day I continued, uninterrupted, to write from his mouth, as he translated *… the history or record called ‘The Book of Mormon.’ (JS—H 1:75n. The details of this miraculous method of translation are still not fully known. Yet we do have a few precious insights. David Whitmer wrote:
President Nelson by Ken Corbett
“Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man.” (David Whitmer, An Address to All Believers in Christ, Richmond, Mo.: n.p., 1887, p. 12.)…” A Treasured Testament 1993 By Elder Russell M. Nelson Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (* and color added)
In this talk by Elder Nelson he chose to use a quote from David Whitmer, which is fine with me. I don’t know more than our Apostles and I sure will never tell them what to ever say. I love and respect them. My comment is, if you read many other scriptures you can also know as Elder Nelson says, “The details of this miraculous method of translation are still not fully known.” I have chosen to use Elder Nelson’s talk and some scriptures to personally research, and I have decided not to depend on David Whitmer’s second had quote. I decided to use first hand quotes of Joseph and Oliver. What you do is of course up to you.
Edited Quote?
My commentary on Elder Nelson’s quote above, is also that the scripture quoted in JSH 1:75n above, adds more value when the last part of that scripture is not omitted by the ellipsis in pink above. Elder Nelson may have purposely left off a portion of that scripture with no intention whatsoever which is fine. I love our Prophet. My purpose is simply to find personal revelation to help me understand the method of translation, so I will use Elder Nelson’s and many other leaders, to help me come to a solid confirmation for myself. I am making the point that certain trusted historians, intellectuals, and editors may, at times, undermine the work of the Lord—intentionally or unintentionally—by their possible omission of certain words with an ellipse or by editing of certain quotes for the Brethren. I am not saying that happened here as I have no idea, but it could happen or does happen with some editors.
Here is the completed scripture that was not included in place of the *Pink ellipse above. “with the Urim and Thummim, or, as the Nephites would have said, ‘Interpreters.” This is a huge statement from scripture that helps me tremendously in understanding the entire context of what Joseph Smith was saying. The last sentence of the quote would say, “Day after day I continued, uninterrupted, to write from his mouth, as he translated with the Urim and Thummim, or, as the Nephites would have said, ‘Interpreters.” JSH 1:75n. That complete sentence gives me clarity that Joseph did not use a stone in a hat.
Lucy Mack Smith’s Description
As I am personally researching translation methods I feel I am losing important meaning by repeating the scripture JSH 1:75 without the entire quote. As my thorough research continued, I found this ellipsis was included in at least 4 or 5 different talks by General Authorities including one in 2020. No Judgement on my part whatsoever, just an emphasis on detailed meaning about the entire scripture which helped me come to my opinion, that a stone in a hat was not used. (Talk references available on request).
This entire scripture to me, in JSH 1:75n is a confirmation to me personally that Joseph used the Urim and Thummim or the Interpreters, not a stone in a hat. Along with the two scriptures in JSH 1:35, and 42, it is clear to me the proper instrument used was “two stones in silver bows… fastened to a breastplate” like the picture below.
Personal Revelation
As you can see Elder Nelson above did say, “The details of this miraculous method of translation are still not fully known.” That means many, including some of the Apostles are not sure the exact method and neither am I. If they did, it would be part of our Doctrine. If we as members want to know additional information about non-doctrinal issues, I believe it is up to each of us individually to gain our own personal revelation about the translation process and many other things that may be important to us. For example I believe the Book of Mormon events happened in North America, based on my own study, research and personal revelation. The Church is neutral on that issue which is fine with me.
In another example of personal study, even though the Church has no official position on evolution, I have a personal opinion. I do not believe a cat can ever become a dog and that evolution can only come from within a species. “This is the most recent quote I can find about the evolution opinion by the Church. “The Church has no official position on the theory of evolution. Organic evolution, or changes to species’ inherited traits over time, is a matter for scientific study. Nothing has been revealed concerning evolution. Though the details of what happened on earth before Adam and Eve, including how their bodies were created, have not been revealed, our teachings regarding man’s origin are clear and come from revelation.” New Era 2016https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/new-era/2016/10/to-the-point/what-does-the-church-believe-about-evolution.html?lang=eng
However in 1987 Elder Nelson gave a great talk about evolution saying, “Through the ages, some without scriptural understanding have tried to explain our existence by pretentious words such as ex nihilo (out of nothing). Others have deduced that, because of certain similarities between different forms of life, there has been a natural selection of the species, or organic evolution from one form to another. Still others have concluded that man came as a consequence of a “big bang” that resulted in the creation of our planet and life upon it. To me, such theories are unbelievable!” “We are children of God, created by him and formed in his image. Recently I studied the scriptures simply to find how many times they testify of the divine creation of man. Looking up references that referred either to create or form (or their derivatives) with either man, men, male, or female in the same verse, I found that there are at least fifty-five verses of scripture that attest to our divine creation. So, we can either believe in evolution or the scriptures, not both.” The Magnificence of Man RUSSELL M. NELSON of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles March 29, 1987.
Elder Nelson quotes David Whitmer, Emma Smith, and Edmund Briggs in his A Treasured Testament article, which may be accurate quotes, but these individuals are all second and third hand witnesses. None of them ever saw Joseph translate the plates nor did they see the breastplate or the spectacles. I however feel the many Scriptures quoted [PDF File Available Below], along with the words of Joseph Smith and of Oliver Cowdery who were first hand accounts, ring most true to my heart as I have followed the council of Elder Benson who said, “Suppose a leader of the Church were to tell you that you were supporting the wrong side of a particular issue. Some might immediately resist this leader and his counsel or ignore it, but I would suggest that you first apply the fourth great civic standard for the faithful Saints. That standard is to live for, to get, and then to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit.”
Said Brigham Young: “I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by Him. … Let every man and woman know, by the whisperings of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not.” (JD, vol. 9, p. 150.)” Ezra Taft Benson April 1972 Conference, Civic Standards for the Faithful Saints.
Professors Opinions I Agree With
Two BYU Professors as I quote below, Craig Ostler and Joseph Fielding McConkie have the opinion that as I have researched I agree with, as I quote them from their article titled The Process of Translating the Book of Mormon. (Available online here and below).Elder Ostler and McConkie say, “As to David Whitmer’s explanation, it should be remembered that he never looked into the Urim and Thummim nor translated anything. His testimony of how the Book of Mormon was translated is hearsay. Spanning a period of twenty years (1869-1888), some seventy recorded testimonies about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon claim David Whitmer as their source. Though there are a number of inconsistencies in these accounts, David Whitmer was repeatedly reported to have said that after the loss of the 116 pages, the Lord took both the plates and the Urim and Thummim from the Prophet, [*]never to be returned. In their stead, David Whitmer maintained, the Prophet used an oval-shaped, chocolate-colored seer stone slightly larger than an egg.
Thus, everything we have in the Book of Mormon, according to Mr. Whitmer, was translated by placing the chocolate-colored stone[Similar to the picture on the left] in a hat into which Joseph would bury his head so as to close out the light. While doing so he could see “an oblong piece of parchment, on which the hieroglyphics would appear,” and below the ancient writing, the translation would be given in English. Joseph would then read this to Oliver Cowdery, who in turn would write it. If he did so correctly, the characters and the interpretation would disappear and be replaced by other characters with their interpretation (Cook, David Whitmer Interviews, 115, 157-58)… Continued below.
*Editors note: It is clear that the Urim and Thummim and the plates were returned to Joseph Smith shortly after the decision to allow Martin to take the 116 pages, Joseph was reprimanded but the translation continued as before. In Church History it says, “Joseph affirmed that he “translated from the plates,” and that he used the Urim and Thummim to do so. After the loss of the 116 pages by Martin Harris, both the plates and the Urim and Thummim were taken from him. Without the Urim and Thummim he could not translate.During this period Joseph made a short visit to his parents in Manchester, New York, and then returned again to Pennsylvania. “Immediately after my return home,” he recounted, “I was walking out a little distance, when, behold, the former heavenly messenger appeared and handed to me the Urim and Thummim again for it had been taken from me in consequence of my having wearied the Lord in asking for the privilege of letting Martin Harris take the writings, which he lost by transgression and I inquired of the Lord through it, and obtained the following [section 3]” (Smith, History of the Church, 1:21-22).
The Process of Translating the Book of Mormon by McConkie and Ostler continues, “Such an explanation is, in our judgment, simply fiction created for the purpose of demeaning Joseph Smith and to undermine the validity of the revelations he received after translating the Book of Mormon. We invite the reader to consider the following: First, for more than fifty years David Whitmer forthrightly rejected Joseph Smith, declaring him to be a fallen prophet. Though he never denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon, he rejected virtually everything else associated with the ministry of Joseph Smith and the restoration of the gospel. His rejection included both the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods, which were restored during the time the Book of Mormon was being translated and, of course, the revelations which would eventually constitute the Doctrine and Covenants. Second, according to David Whitmer’s account of how the Book of Mormon was translated, Joseph Smith was the instrument of transmission, while translation rested solely with the Lord. This is simply a reflection of the notion of divine dictation, which holds that every word of scripture comes from God himself. If David Whitmer’s account is to be accepted, revelation also includes spelling and punctuation. This notion is at odds with the explanation found in Doctrine and Covenants 8 and 9, which details how revelation comes. In this respect, Richard Anderson observed that Whitmer “after decades of reflection outside of the Church, concluded that no modification could possibly be made in any revelation. This highly rigid view of these revelations matched his highly rigid view of the origin of the Book of Mormon” (“By the Gift and Power of God,” 84).By contrast Brigham Young observed, “Should the Lord Almighty send an angel to re-write the Bible, it would in many places be very different from what it now is. And I will even venture to say that if the Book of Mormon were now to be re-written, in many instances it would materially differ from the present translation” (Journal of Discourses, 9:311). David Whitmer repeatedly said that if a word was misspelled, the translator would not be able to go on until it had been corrected. This hardly allows for the 3,913 changes that have been made between the first edition of the Book of Mormon and the edition presently in use. Third,if the process of translation was simply a matter of reading from a seer stone in a hat, surely Oliver Cowdery could do that as well, if not better, than Joseph Smith. After all, Oliver was a schoolteacher. How then do we account for Oliver’s inability to translate? Further, regarding the use of a hat in translation, Joseph’s brother William Smith explained that the Prophet used the Urim and Thummim attached to the breastplate by a rod that held the seer stones set in the rims of a bow before his eyes. “The instrument caused a strain on Joseph’s eyes, and he sometimes resorted to covering his eyes with a hat to exclude the light in part” (Smith, Rod of Iron 1, 3 [February 1924]: 7).Fourth, Joseph Smith repeatedly testified to having both the plates and the Urim and Thummim returned to him.”
[See my* Editor’s Note above in green]. He further testified that he translated from the plates by the use of the Urim and Thummim.
Spectacles Fastened to a Breastplate
The Process of Translating the Book of Mormon by McConkie and Ostler continues, “Fifth, David Whitmer gave inconsistent accounts of the instrument used to translate. Thomas Wood Smith, in a published response about an interview he had with David Whitmer, who told him that Joseph Smith used the Urim and Thummim in translating the Book of Mormon, wrote, “When I first read Mr. Traughber’s paper in the Herald of November 15th, I thought that I would not notice his attack at all, as I supposed that I was believed by the Church to be fair and truthful in my statements of other men’s views, when I have occasion to use them, and I shall make this reply only: That unless my interview with David Whitmer in January, 1876, was only a dream, or that I failed to understand plain English, I believed then, and since, and now, that he said that Joseph possessed, and used the Urim and Thummim in the translation of the inscriptions referred to, and I remember of being much pleased with that statement, as I had heard of the ‘Seer stone’ being used. And unless I dreamed the interview, or very soon after failed to recollect the occasion, he described the form and size of the said Urim and Thummim. The nearest approach to a retraction of my testimony as given . . . publicly in many places from the stand from January 1876, till now, is, that unless I altogether misunderstood ‘Father Whitmer’ on this point, he said the translation was done by the aid of the Urim and Thummim. If he says he did not intend to convey such an impression to my mind, then I say I regret that I misunderstood him, and unintentionally have misrepresented him. But that I understood him as represented by me frequently I still affirm” (as cited in Cook, David Whitmer Interviews, 56).Finally,the testimony of David Whitmer simply does not accord with the divine pattern. If Joseph Smith translated everything that is now in the Book of Mormon without using the gold plates, we are left to wonder why the plates were necessary in the first place. It will be remembered that possession of the plates placed the Smith family in considerable danger, causing them a host of difficulties. If the plates were not part of the translation process, this would not have been the case. It also leaves us wondering why the Lord directed the writers of the Book of Mormon to make a duplicate record of the plates of Lehi. This provision which compensated for the loss of the 116 pages would have served no purpose either.
Joseph used the same Interpreters the Brother of Jared sealed up. Ether 4:5
Further, we would be left to wonder why it was necessary for Moroni to instruct Joseph each year for four years before he was entrusted with the plates. We would also wonder why it was so important for Moroni to show the plates to the three witnesses, including David Whitmer. And why did the Lord have the Prophet show the plates to the eight witnesses? Why all this flap and fuss if the Prophet didn’t really have the plates and if they were not used in the process of translation? What David Whitmer is asking us to believe is that the Lord had Moroni seal up the plates and the means by which they were to be translated hundreds of years before they would come into Joseph Smith’s possession and then decided to have the Prophet use a seer stone found while digging a well so that none of these things would be necessary after all. Is this, we would ask, really a credible explanation of the way the heavens operate? When asked how the labor of translation was accomplished, the Prophet declined to answer, saying, “It was not intended to tell the world all the particulars of the coming forth of the book of Mormon”(Cannon and Cook, Far West Record, 23).
Surely we do not look to the world or the understanding of the world for an answer. We would expect to find that understanding only as we come to understand in greater measure the operations of the Spirit of revelation.” The Process of Translating the Book of Mormon by Joseph Fielding McConkie (Professor of Ancient Scripture, BYU) and Craig J. View a video from our Firm Foundation Conference by Dr. Craig J Ostler about the proper method of translation titled: “Book of Mormon Translation Instrument Descriptions-Interpreters, Urim & Thummim, and Seer Stones”
Bio: Dr. Ostler is a Professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. Many years ago he served in the Bogotá, Colombia mission, and married his sweetheart soon after returning home. He and his wife, Sandy, have 7 children, 21 grandchildren, and counting. He has served in mostly teaching capacities in his Church callings, but also as a bishop and on three Stake High Councils. He was a committee member for the Church curriculum that has grown to become the “Come Follow Me.” material. He is currently as of June, 2022 as a Mission President in Laredo, Texas.
JSH 1:34 “He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants; 35 Also, that there were two stones in silver bows—and these stones, fastened to a breastplate, constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim—deposited with the plates; and the possession and use of these stones were what constituted “seers” in ancient or former times; and that God had prepared them for the purpose of translating the book.”
JSH 1:75* “Oliver Cowdery describes these events thus: “These were days never to be forgotten—to sit under the sound of a voice dictated by the inspiration of heaven, awakened the utmost gratitude of this bosom! Day after day I continued, uninterrupted, to write from his mouth, as he translated with the Urim and Thummim, or, as the Nephites would have said, ‘Interpreters,’ the history or record called ‘The Book of Mormon.’”
Where’s the Breastplate?
In my opinion it is not possible that Joseph used a stone in a hat to translate, as the scriptures tell us he clearly used the two stones fastened to a breastplate above. The question I ask you is, where was the BREASTPLATE during Joseph’s translation and how would he keep his promise to not show the plates, the breastplate nor the spectacles to anyone as stated here:? “Again, he told me, that when I got those plates of which he had spoken—for the time that they should be obtained was not yet fulfilled—I should not show them to any person;neither the breastplate with the Urim and Thummim; only to those to whom I should be commanded to show them; if I did, I should be destroyed”. JSH 1:42.Lucy Mack Smith said, “That of which I spoke, which Joseph termed a key, was indeed nothing more nor less than a Urim and Thummim by which the angel manifested those things to him that were shown him in, vision; by which also he could at any time ascertain the approach of danger, either to himself or the record, and for this cause he kept these things constantly about his person.” Lucy Mack Smith.
Because of the commandment of the Lord to not show the plates, spectacles or breastplate to anyone, I believe in this painting by Ann Marie Oborn that I commissioned, may be how Joseph kept that directive: During translation I propose Joseph used a farmer’s hat that he probably wore daily to work on the farm. (picture right). A young boy would most likely only use a stove pipe hat for a dance or for proper attire, but his working hat would be with him almost constantly you would think. This hat I believe was not used with a stone in it, but as a tool or prop to hide the two stones in a bow or the spectacles from the view of the scribe, as you see in the picture below. The hat is nothing more than a prop to block out Emma’s vision. Joseph could also keep his promise to not show the breastplate (under his shirt. More discussed below),or the spectacles hidden from view by the hat but not in the hat; and the plates lay partially covered so Emma could not see them from her angle of view. See Photograph from Emma’s point of view below:
As Emma is writing, she cannot see the plates, spectacles nor the breastplate which were, as Lucy Mack Smith said, “constantly upon his person.”Joseph’s view. As you can see Emma’s view of the plates, spectacles and breastplate [under Joseph’s shirt] would be hidden. Curtain Not Used
By Elder Neal A. Maxwell Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles “With regard to the physical circumstances of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his scribe, Martin Harris was quoted as saying there was a blanket or curtain hung between himself and Joseph during the translation process. If Martin is accurately quoted, perhaps this occurred when the Prophet was copying characters directly from the plates in the sample to be taken to Professor Charles Anthon, since the dates mentioned are several months before Martin Harris’s brief scribal duties began.I say this because although David Whitmer mentions a blanket being used—it was only to partition off the living area in order to keep both the translator and scribe from the eyes of visitors. (see David Whitmer Interviews: A Restoration Witness, ed. Lyndon W. Cook, [1991], 173).
Elder Maxwell continues, “In fact, Elizabeth Anne Whitmer Cowdery, Oliver’s wife, said, “Joseph never had a curtaindrawn between him and his scribe” (quoted in John W. Welch and Tim Rathbone, “The Translation of the Book of Mormon: Basic Historical Information,” F.A.R.M.S. report WRR–86, p. 25). Emma likewise said of her days as scribe, early on, that Joseph dictated “hour after hour with nothing between us” (“Last Testimony of Sister Emma,” 289). Of course, the real revelatory process involved Joseph’s mind and faith, which could not be seen by others in any case.” By the Gift and Power of God Neal A. Maxwell 1997 Ensign.
A Demonstration? Use Made of a Blanket?
“In order to give privacy to the proceeding a blanket, which served as a portière, was stretched across the family living room to shelter the translators and the plates from the eyes of any who might call at the house while the work was in progress. This, Mr. Whitmer says, was the only use made of the blanket, and it was not for the purpose of concealing the plates or the translator from the eyes of the amanuensis. In fact, Smith was at no time hidden from his collaborators, and the translation was performed in the presence of not only the persons mentioned, but of the entire Whitmer household[?] and several of Smith’s relatives besides.” David Whitmer, as interviewed by the Chicago Tribune (1885). “The Book of Mormon,” Chicago Tribune, December 17, 1885 (Color and Parenthesis added)
This next information goes along with what Elder Maxwell quoted above in blue text about a blanket that David Whitmer mentioned. In regards to the above quote, my good friend and associate Jonathan Neville believes it is possible [?] that Joseph Smith showed many of the Whitmer’s a demonstration of the stone in the hat. It is a very interesting idea, but I don’t think it is correct. In my opinion I have a question about Joseph showing a demonstration to appease others curiosity and I don’t think that was necessary. I don’t think Joseph was obligated to show anyone a sneak preview so to speak. As you read my idea about the breastplate under Joseph’s shirt below, and the spectacles hidden with the hat as a prop only, I think it is a better possibility. It seems possible that some may have seen Joseph with his head in a hat, but they never saw what was in the hat. They were just guessing. As usual, you all can decide for yourself, and you can also contribute and share with Jonathan or myself what you feel happened. None of us know for sure.
Jonathan and I are in total agreement otherwise, as Jonathan said, “The story that doesn’t work is the currently popular narrativethat Joseph Smith never translated anything, that he merely read words off a stone in a hat (and it doesn’t matter whether that was a “peep stone” he found in a well or the spectacles, if he didn’t even use the plates), and Joseph and Oliver misled people by claiming he translated the engravings on the plates by means of the Nephite interpreters.” Jonathan Neville (bold and color added)
In speaking about the demonstration, Jonathan says, “He [Joseph Smith] realized he could just do a demonstration of the process by just reciting Isaiah from memory. So he went downstairs, put the stone in the hat, recited Isaiah, and the three scribes wrote it as fast as they could to keep up… On this one occasion, the demonstration, he was dictating so fast that he had three scribes and they were getting tired and had to take turns, which is not the normal manner of translation. That’s why I propose, anyway, that he was reciting from memory looking at the stone in the hat.” Jonathan Neville, A Man that can Translate
Why I don’t Believe the Demonstration Idea
Joseph wouldn’t allow the perception that his demonstration was the actual translation being shown if it wasn’t. It seems deceiving.
As Joseph was told to not show the plates, or the breastplate or the spectacles, none of those who participated in the demonstration saw any of that. Maybe they saw the rock and the hat, but why would Joseph want them to see a rock in a hat?
I don’t necessarily believe the David Whitmer quote from the Chicago Tribune above, that a blanket covered the front of the first story room so others could not see if they came to the door. Just how long did this demonstration last? Wouldn’t the blanket make neighbors even more curious as to what was going on?
The Chicago quote says that each time they would open with a prayer. How many times did they do the demonstration and how much time did the Whitmer’s loose on their farm work? Did the demonstration go on for a few days or a few weeks?
Why would Joseph recite Isaiah from memory as Jonathan says, and have Whitmer’s and others write it down during the demonstration, as Joseph supposedly read the stone in a hat with his memorized lines of Isaiah?
Why would Joseph have unauthorized scribes to actually write down some of Isaiah that Joseph had memorized, or even let the scribes know that some of Isaiah’s words were contained in the Book of Mormon?
Why would Joseph have to show the demonstration and have it include sacred writings that the others could hear?
The demonstration says nothing about the breastplate. Where was it and didn’t Joseph need it to translate every time?
Jonathan doesn’t mention how the breastplate was used with the spectacles, but I feel the two items had to be used together as many scriptures speak to that method.
Martin Harris Needed a Curtain?
I believe Martin Harris was very superstitious, nervous and scared of consequences. The way he acted would seem to me that he made Joseph put a curtain between them as Martin wanted no chance of himself accidently seeing the plates, breastplate or spectacles. Martin seemed he was afraid that he may meet his utter destruction as the Lord warned Joseph. “Harris declares, that when he acted as amanuensis, and wrote the translation, as Smith dictated, such was his fear of the Divine displeasure that a screen (sheet) was suspended between the prophet and himself. “Gold Bible, No. 6.” The Reflector (Palmyra, New York) 2, no. 16 (19 March 1831): 126–27.
[Martin Harris] says “he wrote a considerable part of the book, as Smith dictated, and at one time the presence of the Lord was so great, that a screen was hung up between him and the Prophet; at other times the Prophet would sit in a different room, or up stairs, while the Lord was communicating to him the contents of the plates. He does not pretend that he ever saw the wonderful plates but once, although he and Smith were engaged for months in deciphering their contents.” Eber D. Howe, Mormonism Unvailed (Painesville, OH, 1834) Based on reports by Doctor Philastus Hurlbut. Eber D. Howe (non-eyewitness), paraphrasing Martin Harris (eyewitness) in Mormonism Unvailed.
Many people listened to Martin Harris who had never seen the translation and wrote articles about Martin who said there was a curtain. But how could Martin ever know what was going on with the actual translation? Most of those people who quoted Martin were from Newspapers, or Apostates, and Authors and other people who seemed to have an animus towards the Prophet. The book Mormonism Unvailed was printed in 1834 and had all kinds of scandalous things about Joseph and he was even said to be a part of the occult. These ideas permeated the entire area near where Joseph lived. I doubt highly the words of Martin Harris and David Whitmer about the rock in the hat story and I only feel at times a curtain was used only with Martin Harris. Since Martin did not translate again after the lost 116 pages a curtain would never be used anyway, as Emma and Ann Cowdery said above.
Joseph Had Several Stones
In my opinion this may very well be the answer to Emma’s quote below about her statement, that the stone was in Joseph’s hat. Most people by now knew Joseph had a seer stone or two, but no one said they saw Joseph use it to translate, they probably just assumed he used it, as they knew he had one. Here is some information from BYU Religious Studies Center, 2016about Joseph apparently having several seer stones. In this book titled, Joseph Smith’s Seer Stones the authors say, “This connection between Native Americans and Joseph Smith’s religious endeavors extended to his brown and white seer stones. William Stafford claimed that someone might find a stone in brass kettles or certain kinds of pots buried in the mounds, insisting that seer stones were being recovered that had a Native American origin. These artifacts were very clearly man-made items, and if a seer stone was found within a kettle, then it must have had some value or purpose as evidenced by the belief that the hands of those who made the kettle must have placed the stone inside. Brigham Young likely had these Native American kettles in mind when he stated that “[Joseph] got [the seer stone] in an Iron kettle 15 feet under ground.” Wayne Sentinel, 27 December 1825 Apparently, the idea of Joseph Smith’s seer stones being anciently deposited by Native Americans became a natural assumption for some and suggested a similar origin for the Nephite interpreters. According to Joseph’s narrative, the Nephite interpreters originated with the ancient American inhabitants, as the ancient prophet Moroni *supposedly placed them in the ground for Joseph to find. At least one of the other two seer stones also shows signs of being prepared anciently…
[*Editors Note: I don’t agree with the book using the term supposedly, as it is very well understood that Moroni placed the artifacts in the Hill Cumorah, the same ones the Brother of Jared gave to him. Moroni said in Ether 4:5, “Wherefore the Lord hath commanded me to write them; and I have written them. And he commanded me that I should seal them up; and he also hath commanded that I should seal up the interpretation thereof; wherefore I have sealed up the interpreters, according to the commandment of the Lord.].”
Joseph Smith’s Seer Stones continues, “Before the Book of Mormon provided the narrative, Joseph Smith’s brown and white stones were artifacts of an ancient past and an expression of his religious devotion in the nineteenth century. Before 1827, the meaning of the brown and white seer stones was less defined, but there is no indication that they were viewed as irreligious artifacts…” Joseph Smith’s Seer Stones/ Michael Hubbard MacKay and Nicholas J. Frederick. BYU Religious Studies Center, 2016. Chapter Title: Seer Stones: Ancient Roots and Religious Significance Remember, Emma is never quoted as seeing the single stone in Joseph’s hat, just that she assumed the stone was in there. Remember also, Joseph did have several single seer stones one white and one brown [picture left], that he found in a well. I also add that this last testimony of Emma’s was written by Joseph Smith III who interviewed Emma Hale Smith shortly before her death which occurred on April 30, 1879 and the interview was published in the October 1, 1879 edition of The Saints Herald.
It was published 5 months after her death, so she did not have the opportunity to review the published statement as correct. Joseph Smith III did say he read Emma’s testimony back to her, and he said that she said it was correct, but we have no way of proving that. Emma said, “I know Mormonism to be the truth; and believe the Church to have been established by divine direction. I have complete faith in it. In writing for your father I frequently wrote day after day, often sitting at the table close by him, he sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us.” Last Testimony of Sister Emma Saint’s Herald, Vol. 26, No 19. p. 289. (1 October 1879) Remember the picture above that shows Emma’s view as Joseph translates. Joseph was told not to show the items to anyone, so the farmers hat in front of the spectacles to block out Emma’s view makes a lot of sense to me. Perhaps this is why the scholars and other BYU Historians claim the stone was “in the hat.” It would be easy for someone to see Joseph translating while only seeing the view of the hat and Joseph looking into it. No one claimed to have seen the actual stone or the spectacles, but they only could see the hat. It would be easy to come to a conclusion that Joseph’s head was “buried in a hat” looking at something they called a seer stone, while never really seeing that Joseph was actually looking through the two stones fastened to a breastplate. These stones were not in the hat, but the hat was blocking their view in order for Joseph to keep his promise of never revealing the Interpreters to anyone. To understand the correct method of translation and the most accurate, we should depend on the many scriptures that tell us that Joseph translated with the use of the spectacles fastened to the breastplate. Nowhere in all the scriptures does it say that Joseph used a stone in a hat. Why repeat a theory when we have the scriptures as our guide? Download a list of 16 quotes, including 8 scriptures that validate this proper method of translation below.

Shirt, Hat, and Linen
Yes, the Prophet of the Lord kept his promise not to show anyone these articles the best way he knew how with his shirt, the hat, and the linen; These perhaps became special articles of the translation and a special part of the” Gift and Power of God”. How marvelous are these spectacles. I quote from the Joseph Smith Papers of Lucy Mack Smith saying, “After breakfast [on the day he received the plates and the urim and thummim] Joseph [Smith] called me into the other room and he set his foot on the bed and leaned his head on his hand and says,… “it is ten times better then I expected.” Then he went on to tell the length and width and thickness of the plates, and said he, “they appear to be gold.” But he seemed to think more of the glasses or the urim and thummim than he did of the plates, for, says he, “I can see anything; they are marvelous.“ (“Joseph Knight’s Recollection of Early Mormon History,” BYU Studies, Vol. 17, No. 1; spelling modernized by Lucy Mack Smith. The glasses were “marvelous”, not a stone. Repeatedly we hear glasses and spectacles which could never be a single stone.
Mother I have got the Key 1st Edition
Lucy also said, “That of which I spoke, which Joseph termed a key, was indeed nothing more nor less than a Urim and Thummim by which the angel manifested those things to him that were shown him in vision; by which also he could at any timeascertain the approach of danger, either to himself or the record, and for this cause he kept these things constantly about his person.” (History of Joseph Smith, Revised and Enhanced, p. 139, 145) I know in my heart, the title of the first art I had painted is, “Mother”, I have got the Key” as Lucy is quoted above. This Key; (Spectacles) unlocked the Heart (Breastplate), so to speak, acting as a Key unlocking Joseph’s mind and heart so he by the “Gift and Power of God” could translate this special book. How I love the Book of Mormon, another witness of Jesus Christ.
The words of Joseph Fielding Smith below are very powerful and reflect my feelings about the way Joseph Smith exercised the “Gift and Power of the Holy Ghost.”
Who Saw the Plates, Breastplate and Spectacles?
I believe there were only three people who actually saw all three items that Joseph found in Hill Cumorah. The gold plates, the breastplate, and the spectacles. They were Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery and Lucy Mack Smith. Lucy saw the spectacles and the breastplate under a linen as Joseph let her hold and feel them covered, as recorded in Lucy’s own history I share with you below, published in 1845.
The “Key” that Joseph kept Constantly about his Person
Joseph Smith said, “Also, that there were two stones in silver bows—and these stones, fastened to a breastplate, constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim—deposited with the plates; and the possession and use of these stones were what constituted “seers” in ancient or former times; and that God had prepared them for the purpose of translating the book.” JSH 1:35Oliver said, “I wrote with my own pen, the entire Book of Mormon (save a few pages) as it fell from the lips of the Prophet Joseph Smith, as he translated it by the gift and power of God, by means of the Urim and Thummim, or, as it is called by the book, “holy interpreters.” October 21, 1848, Oliver Cowdery Speaking at a Conference at Kanesville High Council According to his mother, Joseph Smith kept the “Key” ‘constantly about his person’. According to Lucy Mack Smith, The “Key“ is the two stones, (that came from the Brother of Jared (Ether 3:22-24) in silver bows, fastened to the breastplate that were found by Joseph in the stone box with the plates at Hill Cumorah. I believe the witness of Lucy Mack Smith and the scripture in JSH 1:35, more than I believe Martin Harris, David Whitmer, or Emma Smith in their statements about a stone in a hat. They never saw the items used for translation as Oliver & Joseph did. Most people knew Joseph had a stone or two, but there is no record of anyone firsthand who saw Joseph use his stone to translate. There is no scripture that mentions a stone in a hat for translation. I believe the scriptures. JSH 1: 35, 52, 62, 75* Mosiah 28: 13, 20 Ether 3: 22-23; 4:5 Alma 37:21, 24-25.
Lucy’s Own Words
“Early in the morning of September 23, 1837, Joseph returned home from Hill Cumorah after retrieving the plates, spectacles, and breastplate. As Joseph entered the house, Lucy Mack Smith said, “I trembled so much with fear lest all might be lost again by some small failure in keeping the commandments, that I was under the necessity of leaving the room to conceal my feelings. Joseph saw this and followed me. Mother, said he. Do not be uneasy. All is right. See here, said he, I have got the key. I knew not what he meant, but took the article in my hands and, examining it with no covering but a silk handkerchief, found that it consisted of two smooth three-cornered diamonds set in glass, and the glasses were set in silver bows connected with each other in much the same way that old-fashioned spectacles are made. [See Picture Below].
Lucy’s DescriptionAnother possible version of the Spectacles
He took them again and left me but did not tell me anything of the record…. That of which I spoke, which Joseph termed a key, was indeed nothing more nor less than a Urim and Thummim by which the angel manifested those things to him that were shown him in vision; by which also he could at any time ascertain the approach of danger, either to himself or the record, and for this cause, he kept these things constantly about his person.” (History of Joseph Smith, p. 139, 145 (JSP- Lucy Mack Smith, History, 1845; ) “After bringing home the plates, Joseph now commenced work with his father on the farm in order to be as near as possible the treasure that was committed to his care. Soon after this, he came in from work one afternoon, and after remaining a short time, he put on his great coat and left the house. I was engaged at the time in an upper room in preparing some oil cloths for painting. When he returned, he requested me to come downstairs. I told him that I could not leave my work just then, yet upon his urgent request, I finally concluded to go down and see what he wanted, upon which he handed me the breastplate spoken of in his history. It was wrapped in a thin muslin handkerchief, so thin that I could see the glistening metal and ascertain its proportions without any difficulty. It was concave on one side and convex on the other and extended from the neck downwards as far as the center of the stomach of a man of extraordinary size. It had four straps of the same material for the purpose of fastening it to the breast, two of which ran back to go over the shoulders, and the other two were designed to fasten to the hips. They were just the width of two of my fingers (for I measured them), and they had holes in the end of them to be convenient in fastening. The whole plate was worth at least five hundred dollars. After I had examined it, Joseph placed it in the chest [See Below] with the Urim and Thummim.” Lucy Mack Smith, History, 1844–1845
Picture of the Original Alvin’s Desk that Joseph used to store three things. The Plates, the Breastplate and the Spectacles.
“I have myself seen and handled the golden plates; they are about eight inches long, and six wide; some of them are sealed together and are not to be opened, and some of them are loose. They are all connected by a ring which passes through a hole at the end of each plate and are covered with letters beautifully engraved. I have seen and felt also the Urim and Thummim. They resemble two large bright diamonds set in a bow like a pair of spectacles. My son puts these over his eyes when he reads unknown languages, and they enable him to interpret them in English. I have likewise carried in my hands the sacred breastplate. It is composed of pure gold and is made to fit the breast very exactly.” Lucy Mack Smith (in Henry Caswall, The City of the Mormons; or, Three Days at Nauvoo, in 1842, 2nd ed. revised and enlarged, (London: J. An Account from William Smith:
Storage of the Spectacles in a pocket on the back of the breastplate.
“Among other things we inquired minutely about the Urim and Thummim and the breastplate. We asked him what was meant by the expression “two rims of a bow,” which held the former. He said a double silver bow was twisted into the shape of the figure eight, and the two stones were placed literally between the two rims of a bow. At one end was attached a rod which was connected with the outer edge of the right shoulder of the breast-plate. By pressing the head a little forward, the rod held the Urim and Thummim before the eyes much like a pair of spectacles. A pocket was prepared in the breastplate on the left side, immediately over the heart. When not in use the Urim and Thummim was placed in this pocket, the rod being of just the right length to allow it to be so deposited. This instrument could, however, be detached from the breastplate and his brother said Joseph often wore it detached when away from home, but always used it in connection with the breastplate when receiving official communications, and usually so when translating as it permitted him to have both hands free to hold the plates.” (J. W. Peterson in The Rod of Iron I:3 (February 1924), 6—7.)
Evidence Joseph had the Breastplate and Spectacles Upon his Person
From the Joseph Smith Papers website we read, “We went to Emma Joseph’s wife and asked her if she knew ought of the record whether Joseph had taken them out or where they were. She said she did not know. He then related what he had seen and heard. Emma said she did not know what to do, but she thought Joseph was to have the record… He sent William for the horse who brought him up with a large hickory withe around his neck as it was necessary according to law to put a withe round the neck of a stray horse before turning him into an inclosure— And Emma was soon on her way to her husband. He was in the well when she arrived but having a sudden impression of to get out of the well he came up and met her. When she found him, she informed of the situation of affairs at home and he went immediately inform to Mrs. Wells and told her that he must return home to attend to some important business. She was not willing for him to leave but upon his promising to come back when he was at liberty again she consented and sent a boy to bring him a horse, which he mounted in his linen frock, with his wife by his side with her horse in decorated as before with a green hickory withe on his neck. And thus they rode through the village of Palmira. When he came he met his father a mile from the house pacing back and forth in great anxiety of mind. Father said there is no danger all is perfectly safe there is no cause of alarm when he had refreshed himself a little he sent Carlos my younger son to his brother Hyrum and told him to ask Hyrum to come up as he wished to see him. [paper fragment inserted after page [10] of book 5].

This quote from Lucy Mack Smith makes it very clear to me of the following. While Joseph dug a well in Macedon, he was wearing the breastplate and spectacles. As Lucy said before, “is made to fit the breast very exactly” Lucy also said about the breastplate and spectacles “he kept these things constantly about his person.” With the storage compartment on the back of the breastplate, as William Smith said, it would be very easy for Joseph to quickly attach the rod to the breastplate he was wearing under his shirt and quickly see that not only was Emma approaching him, but that the plates were safe. This quote said nothing about a stone being put into a hat so Joseph could ascertain danger or to see Emma coming. The quote does not even mention a hat or a seer stone. My conclusion is, Joseph wore the breastplate with the spectacles in the pocket on back and as Lucy says twice, had them “constantly on his person.”
Other Uses of the Urim and Thummim
“In this respect the testimony of Lorenzo Brown about the preparation the Prophet made for his translation of the Bible may be instructive. He records the Prophet as saying: “After I got through translating the Book of Mormon, I took up the Bible to read with the Urim and Thummim. I read the first chapter of Genesis and I saw the things as they were done. I turned over the next and the next, and the whole passed before me like a grand panorama; and so on chapter after chapter until I read the whole of it. I saw it all!” (as cited in Matthews, Plainer Translation, 25).” The Process of Translating the Book of Mormon Joseph Fielding McConkie (Professor of Ancient Scripture, BYU) Craig J. Ostler (Assistant Professor of Church History and Doctrine, BYU) “Not only did Joseph Smith use the Urim and Thummim to translate the Book of Mormon, but he also used it to receive revelation from God. Specifically, Doctrine and Covenants sections 3, 6, 11, and 14, 15,16, were all given through the Urim and Thummim. (See headings to these sections) We learn from the Doctrine and Covenants that “the place where God resides is a great Urim and Thummim.” In addition, “this earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon.” And each person who receives the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17 will be able to use the Urim and Thummim (D&C 130:8–10).” by Jay A. Conclusion- Joseph Fielding Smith
“Joseph Smith received the same Urim and Thummim had by the Brother of Jared for it was the one expressly provided for the translation of the Jaredite and Nephite records.(D&C 10: 1; 17:1; Ether 3:22- 28.) It was separate and distinct from the one had by Abraham and the one had by the priests in Israel. The Prophet also had a seer stone which was separate and distinct from the Urim and Thummim, and which (speaking loosely) has been called by some a Urim and Thummim.” Mormon Doctrine page 576 under title Urim and Thummim and (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, pp. 222-226. Italics added) Moroni said, “And now he [Mosiah] translated them by the means of those two stones which were fastened into the two rims of a bow. Now these things were prepared from the beginning, and were handed down from generation to generation, for the purpose of interpreting languages; And they have been kept and preserved by the hand of the Lord, that he should discover to every creature who should possess the land the iniquities and abominations of his people;” Mosiah 28:13-15 “The earliest mention of the Urim and Thummim is in connection with the brother of Jared. The Lord told him to keep a record of certain sacred things and to seal the record up. (We have that record in the book of Ether.) “And behold, these two stones will I give unto thee, and ye shall seal them up also with the things which ye shall write” (Ether 3:23). That same Urim and Thummim was used by Joseph Smith in translating the Book of Mormon.” LDS Living
Urim and Thummim Used by Brigham Young?
The Prophet Joseph Smith was not the only individual in this dispensation to use the Urim and Thummim and to receive revelations from God. Heber C. Kimball testified that Brigham Young also used these sacred instruments. Has Brother Brigham Young got the Urim and Thummim? Yes, he has everything that is necessary for him to receive the will and mind of God to this people. Do I know it? Yes, I know all about it. . . . (Heber C. Kimball, J.D. 2:111)
Using a Urim and Thummim is the special prerogative of a seer, and it would seem reasonable that such instruments were used from the time of Adam. However, the earliest mention is in connection with the brother of Jared (Ether 3:21–28). Abraham used a Urim and Thummim (Abr. 3:1–4), as did Aaron and the priests of Israel, and also the prophets among the Nephites (Omni 1:20–21; Mosiah 8:13–19; 21:26–28; 28:11–20; Ether 4:1–7). There is more than one Urim and Thummim, but we are informed that Joseph Smith had the one used by the brother of Jared (Ether 3:22–28; D&C 10:1; 17:1). (See Seer.) A partial description is given in JS—H 1:35. Joseph Smith used it in translating the Book of Mormon and in obtaining other revelations.
This earth in its celestial condition will be a Urim and Thummim, and many within that kingdom will have an additional Urim and Thummim (D&C 130:6–11).
Prophets, Apostles, and other Leaders say that the USA is the Promised Land Chosen by God
Gerald Lund said, “In the fall of 2007, my assignment as a General Authority Seventy was in Salt Lake City, working in the Church Office Building. One day I went down to a small cafeteria in the basement of the Church Administration Building that is reserved for General Authorities. After getting my food, I saw that four of my colleagues in the Seventy were seated at a table for six, just starting to eat. They invited me to join them. We spoke briefly about our various assignments, but soon the talk turned to the current financial crisis. It didn’t take long for our conversation to become quite bleak in tone. One of the brethren had a grandchild who had recently graduated with an MBA but was having no luck in finding employment. Another reported that a grandchild was unsure about wanting to get married and bring children into the world.
About that time, as this cloud of gloom settled over our lunch table, Russell M. Nelson, then Elder Nelson of the Twelve, came into the lunchroom with a tray of food. Seeing that we had a vacant spot at our table, he joined us. He ate quietly for a time as our conversation went right on in that same sense of discouragement. Finally, one of the brethren said, “They’re talking about the possibility of the whole government of the United States failing. Then what shall we do?”
Elder Nelson, who hadn’t said much since sitting down, laid down his fork and looked at us directly. His expression was very sober as he spoke quietly, saying something like this: “Brethren, the Lord chose the United States of America as the place for the Restoration of the gospel in our dispensation. He did that so we would have a base of religious freedom that would sustain the work of the Restoration. Also, the financial affluence and the political stability of the United States makes it possible for our Church to take the gospel to the world. That is a task that is not yet finished. Brethren, the Lord is at the helm. He will not let this work fail.”
That was more than ten years ago, but I still vividly remember two things. First, how sheepish we felt for letting ourselves become so negative. And the second was the lesson taught: God is in control. Why then do we fear? It was a profound teaching moment, and I have reminded myself of that day often when I have found myself growing discouraged and pessimistic”. God is at the helm! by Elder Gerald N. A Promised Land” by Jeffrey R. Holland June 1976 Ensign
1. “The most sacred of places, then, will always be those locations which God has designated for holy and eternal purposes, locations where he is the ‘doer of the deed.’ These places are revered forever by his faithful children wherever they may be. America is such a place, but of course it wasn’t always called America nor has it always been identified by a distinctive continental shape. 2. “Originally it was simply a portion of that large, single land mass which God in his creative process called ‘Earth’ and which, when completed, was pronounced ‘good.’ (Gen. 1:10.) Whatever its name and geographical configuration, however, it was from the beginning a land of divinity as well as a land of destiny. 3. “The choicest part of this earthly creation was a garden ‘eastward in Eden’ where God placed our first parents, Adam and Eve. This resplendent place filled with paradisiacal glory was located on that part of the land mass where the city Zion, or the New Jerusalem of the earth’s last days, would eventually be built. (See D&C 57:1–3, D&C 84:1–3) 4. “After Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden, they dwelt at a place called Adam-Ondi-Ahman, located in what is now Daviess County, Missouri. In that region this first family lived out their days, tilling the soil, tending the flocks, offering sacrifices, and learning the gospel of Jesus Christ from on high. 5. “There Adam prophesied concerning all the families of the earth and, three years before his death, called together the righteous remnant of his posterity and bestowed upon them his last blessing. The Lord appeared unto this faithful group and Adam’s family rose up ‘and blessed Adam, and called him Michael, the prince, the archangel…’ 6. “Never before had one spot of earth been favored with such a meeting, nor provided the stage for such sacred scenes from the drama of man’s ultimate destiny… 7. “The righteous Enoch helped save a city but the heavens wept over the wickedness of his generation, shedding their tears as the rain upon the mountains. (Moses 7:28).” A Promised Land, by Jeffrey R. Holland June 1976 Ensign (Color and numbers have been added).
1. Earth Defiled
2. Great Deluge
3. Choice Land Set Apart
4. Jaredites Re-People the Promised Land
“But even as such sacred manifestations and proclamations were recorded, the land was being polluted with unrighteousness… Indeed, the earth itself groaned against the defilement of God’s sacred soil, crying: ‘I am weary, because of the wickedness of my children. …’ Two generations later the Lord was so pained by that generation ‘without affection’ (Moses 7:33) that he opened the windows of heaven and cleansed the entire earth with water. Thus, the ‘everlasting decree’ (Ether 2:10) was first taught that he who will not obey the Lord in righteousness will be swept from this sacred land. The lesson would be tragically retaught in dispensations yet to come. Holy scripture records that ‘after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof.’ (Ether 13:2.)
Such a special place needed now to be kept apart from other regions, free from the indiscriminate traveler as well as the soldier of fortune. To guarantee such sanctity the very surface of the earth was rent. In response to God’s decree, the great continents separated and the ocean rushed in to surround them.
The promised place was set apart. Without habitation it waited for the fulfillment of God’s special purposes. With care and selectivity, the Lord began almost at once to re-people the promised land. The Jaredites came first, with stories of the great flood fresh in their memories and the Lord’s solemn declaration ringing in their ears: ‘Whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them.’ (Ether 2:8). Despite such counsel, however, the Jaredite civilization steadily degenerated into a violent society which forced a man to keep ‘the hilt of his sword in his right hand’ (Ether 14:2)—until finally he ‘ate and slept, and prepared for death on the morrow.’ (Ether 15:26.)A Promised Land, by Jeffrey R. Holland June 1976 Ensign
Garden of Eden
“Brigham Young, also a close associate of the Prophet, testified similarly: In the beginning, after this earth was prepared for man, the Lord commenced his work upon what is now called the American continent, where the Garden of Eden was made. In the days of Noah, in the days of the Boating of the ark, he took the people to another part of the earth. (Journal of Discourses, p. 102)
In conversation with Orson Hyde, on March 15, 1857, President Young said: You have been both to Jerusalem and Zion, and seen both. I have not seen either, for I have never been in Jackson County. Now it is a pleasant thing to think of and to know where the Garden of Eden was. Did you ever think of it? I do not think many do, for in Jackson County was the Garden of Eden. Joseph has declared this, and
I am as much bound to believe that as to believe that Joseph was a prophet of God. (Journal History, March 15, 1857)
That is the position of the Latter-day Saints today, with respect to the much-discussed location of the Garden of Eden. Adam, after his expulsion from the Garden of Eden, lived in the vicinity of the great Missouri and Mississippi rivers. As his descendants multiplied, they would naturally settle along the fertile and climatically acceptable river valleys. When the flood came in the days of Noah, the Mississippi drainage must have increased to a tremendous volume, quite in harmony with the Biblical account. Noah’s ark would be floated on the mighty, rushing waters, towards the Gulf of Mexico. With favorable winds, it would cross the Atlantic to the Eastern continents. There the human race, in its second start on earth, began to multiply and fill the earth.
The location of the Garden of Eden in America, and at Independence, Missouri, clears up many a problem which the Bible account of Eden and its garden has left in the minds of students.”John A. Widtsoe Arranged by G. Homer Durham Salt Lake City, Utah Text (c) 1960 by Bookcraft Chapter 12 Item 4
President Joseph Fielding Smith said: “In accord with the revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, we teach that the Garden of Eden was on the American continent located where the City of Zion, or the New Jerusalem, will be built. When Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden, they eventually dwelt at a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman, situated in what is now Daviess County, Missouri. … We are committed to the fact that Adam dwelt on [the] American continent.” (Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., comp. Two Promised Lands
Only Two Promised Covenant Lands
“There are only two “Promised Lands” mentioned by Christ in the Book of Mormon; Jerusalem of the Old World (3 Nephi 20:29) and New Jerusalem of the New World (3 Nephi 20:22). Both of these covenant lands of promise were given by the Lord to the house of Israel for their latter day gathering place. The New World Promised Land would be the location of the gathering place for the House of Israel in the America’s. Where is this gathering place? It will be at the New Jerusalem. And where is the New Jerusalem going to be located? We know through revelation that the New Jerusalem will be built in Jackson County Missouri, in the Heartland of North America (D&C 84:1-4).
Did the Book of Mormon history take place on the same land as the New Jerusalem? Multiple passages establish that Lehi’s family was lead to and remained on this Promised Land throughout their entire history.(1 Nephi 13:30, 22:7, 2 Nephi 1:5, 3 Nephi 20:22, 21:2-4,21:22-23, Ether 13:2-6). Therefore the land the Nephites, Jaredites, Mulekites and Lamanites lived upon was their “covenanted” land of promise and must – by covenant – include the Heartland of North America because it is the revealed location of the New Jerusalem by the Lord Himself.” Rod Meldrum The Scriptural Basis for the Heartland Model (Click for entire article)
TWO LANDS OF PROMISE Page 508 Annotated Book of Mormon
“…out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem” (2 Nephi 12:3). “And He shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth” (2 Nephi 21:12).
“We are committed to the fact that Adam dwelt on this American continent. But when Adam dwelt here, it was not the American continent, nor was it the Western Hemisphere, for all the land was in one place, and all the water was in one place. There was no Atlantic Ocean separating the hemispheres” – Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation Vol. III, [1954], 499
Book of Mormon Geography
“Many proposed Book of Mormon geography theories were originated using a method proposed by Dr. John Sorenson and others who taught that the first step was to create a hypothetical or “internal” map using the 500+ geography related passages. This has lead to more than 150 different proposed geographies. The book was not written for its geography, but for its prophecies. Can we learn more about its geography through its prophecies than we can by speculating using hypothetical maps? Following is a brief synopsis of the scriptural basis for the Heartland Model geography of the Book of Mormon.” Rod Meldrum The Scriptural Basis for the Heartland Model
Cainan, the First Recorded “Land of Promise” in Scripture
“The first recorded instance of a “land of promise” in scripture is a land called Cainan, named after a great-grandson of Father Adam (PGP Moses 6:17). Three years prior to his death, Adam called his righteous posterity together, specifically including Cainan by name, and gave them his last blessing in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman (D&C 107:53). Interestingly, the original or pre-flood “land of promise” was a land in the vicinity of Adam-ondi-Ahman which is known by modern revelation to be within the state of Missouri, USA (D&C 116:1).” Rod Meldrum The Scriptural Basis for the Heartland Model
“And Enos [grandson of Adam] lived ninety years, and begat Cainan. And Enos and the residue of the people of God came out from the land, which was called Shulon, and dwelt in a land of promise, which he called after his own son, whom he had named Cainan [the land of Cainan].” (Moses 6:17)
“And behold, this people will I establish in this land, unto the fulfilling of the covenant which I made with your father Jacob, and it shall be a New Jerusalem.” (3 Nephi 20:22)
“Three years previous to the death of Adam, he called Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah, who were all high priests, with the residue of his posterity who were righteous, into the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and there bestowed upon them his last blessing.” (Doctrine & Covenants 107:53)
Canaan, the Second Recorded “Land of Promise” in Scripture
“And then we [Abraham and family] passed from Jershon through the land unto the place of Sechem; it was situated in the plains of Moreh, and we had already come into the borders of the land of the Canaanites, and I offered sacrifice there in the plains of Moreh, and called on the Lord devoutly, because we had already come into the land of this idolatrous nation. And the Lord appeared unto me in answer to my prayers, and said unto me: ‘Unto thy seed will I give this land.’” (Abraham 2:18-19)
“And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him: “Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land
which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” (Genesis 13:14-15)
While living in the Old World, Abraham entered into a covenant with God. Four major covenant blessings that were given to Abraham are highlighted below and will be invoked by Lehi when he arrives in the New World where he is directed by the Lord God to “a land which is choice above all other lands” (1 Nephi 2: 20).
1-The Promised Land of Canaan (An Inheritance):
“And then we [Abraham’s family and friends] passed from Jershon through the land unto the place of Sechem; it was situated in the plains of Moreh, and we had already come into the borders of the land of the Canaanites, and I offered sacrifice there in the plains of Moreh, and called on the Lord devoutly, because we had already come into the land of this idolatrous nation. And the Lord appeared unto me in answer to my prayers, and said unto me: “Unto thy seed will I give this land” (Abraham 2: 18-19). “I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God” (Genesis 17:8). 2- Posterity (Seed, Descendants):
“I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea seashore” (Genesis 22:17). 3- Prosperity (Economic, Wealth):
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee (that is, in thy Priesthood) and in thy seed (that is, thy Priesthood), for I give unto thee a promise that this right shall continue in thee, and in thy seed after thee (that is to say, the literal seed, or the seed of the body) shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal” (Abraham 2:11). “Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that you do” (Deuteronomy 29:9). 4- Security (Protection):
“I will send My fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee” (Exodus 23:27). In order for Abraham’s seed to bless all of God’s children with the gospel they will need a land to establish a culture of righteousness independent of unrighteous cultural norms, they will need children to share the gospel message, resources to support their missionary efforts and God’s security so that missions can be performed in lieu of military service. This covenant enables the blessings necessary to carry out His work of salvation to all nations through His covenant people.” Annotated Book of Mormon Page 46
“When Lehi arrived in the New World he testified concerning the land of promise which they had obtained. He was shown a vision that Jerusalem had been destroyed. The children of Israel had become wicked and rejected the Lord, breaking their national covenant and causing the Lord’s revocation of His special blessings of their lands, posterity, prosperity and security. Their lands were taken by the Assyrians and Babylonians resulting in tremendous loss of life, prosperity and making them vulnerable to outside attacks. Lehi’s vision for his posterity on the promised land included the same covenant blessings given to Abraham in the Old World. He would now renew or invoke this covenant in the New World. Many hundreds of years previous to Lehi’s arrival the prophet Ether had seen in vision “a New Jerusalem upon this land” (Ether 13:4) in the New World.” Annotated Book of Mormon page 50
“A CHOICE LAND”
“Choice” can mean excellent or superior, but it can also mean carefully selected for a righteous people to dwell and prosper. The Book of Mormon uses it in the last connotation: ‘And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people’ (Ether 2:7; emphasis added). “This does not mean that the land of North America is ‘superior’ to all other lands. However, it was ‘carefully selected’ for a special purpose. For the Jaredites it was a land chosen for a ‘righteous people.’ For the Nephites, it was ‘carefully selected’ as a land of promise and a covenant land for a remnant of the House of Israel.
“The covenant land can be a blessing and also a cursing in that, if the people don’t keep the covenant, they are worse off than had they never entered the covenant in the first place. In this sense, America has been carefully selected not only as a promised land for the Jaredites and the Nephites, but as the central place for the Lord’s marvelous work and a wonder in our day. America has been chosen to host
a) the restoration of the Gospel,
b) the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon,
c) the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and
d) the restoration of Priesthood authority and keys for the gathering of Israel and the salvation of the dead.
These blessings come with great responsibilities. America is not “superior” to any other land created by God. This is consistent with the basic principle that God is no respecter of persons, that He speaks to all His children wherever they live: ‘Know ye not that there are more nations than one? Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth My word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth?’ (2 Nephi 29:7; emphasis added).
In this sense, every land can be a promised land for the people who live there. We should appreciate all respective homelands for every nation or peoples in every continent. Understanding the history of Book of Mormon connections may help us recognize that all people can develop their own spiritual connections and traditions with their respective homeland.” – Jonathan Neville. Page 509 Annotated Book of Mormon.
12 Tribes of Israel
How many Tribes of Israel were there? 12! Two Tribes didn’t receive Land! Who were they? (Joseph and Levi)
“Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.” Joshua 13:14
“So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance.” Joshua 16:4.
The House of Ephraim and the House of Manasseh each received a land inheritance. Their father Joseph did not. Joseph’s Land was indeed, the United States of America.
“Joseph’s inheritance was to be a land choice above all others” –Pres. Russell M. Nelson (Full Quote Below)
Wherefore, the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this land; [North America] and it shall be a land of their inheritance; and they shall build up a holy city[New Jerusalem] unto the Lord, like unto the Jerusalem of old; and they shall no more be confounded, until the end come when the earth shall pass away. Ether 13:8 Color and Parentheses added.
Land of Joseph
“The Book of Mormon reveals that Joseph, the son of Jacob who was once sold into Egypt, foresaw the Prophet Joseph Smith and his day and noted that there would be many similarities in their lives. Centuries later, the Prophet Joseph stated, “I feel like Joseph in Egypt.” The Book of Mormon reveals that the inheritance of Joseph, son of Israel, was not forgotten when land was distributed to the tribes of Israel, as promised in the Abrahamic covenant. Joseph’s inheritance was to be a land choice above all others. It was choice not because of beauty or wealth of natural resources, but choice because it was chosen to be the repository of sacred writings on golden plates from which the Book of Mormon would one day come. It was choice because it would eventually host the world headquarters of the restored Church of Jesus Christ in the latter days. And it was choice because it is a land of liberty for those who worship the Lord and keep His commandments.” President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, addresses new Mission Presidents June 22 through June 26, 2016 (Emphasis added)
This quote to me clearly shows, that the Land chosen for Joseph of Egypt was indeed CHOICE above all others including any land in Canaan and indeed it was to be the United States of America, the place of Joseph Smith, the gold plates, Salt Lake City and this choice land of liberty. I love what Pres Hinckley said about the United States.
“I should like to say a few words about America…No land is without its beauty, no people without their virtues, and I hope that you who come from elsewhere will pardon my saying a few words concerning my own native land, America…surely this is a good land, a choice land, a chosen land. To me it is a miracle, a creation of the Almighty.” Gordon B. Hinckley Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled”, BYU Speeches of the Year, October 29, 1974, pp. 267-68
And Heber J. Grant said, “It was not by chance that the Puritans left their native land and sailed away to the shores of New England, and others later followed. They were the advance guard of the army of the Lord, predestined to establish the God-given system of government under which we live and to make America, which is the land of Joseph, the gathering place of Ephraim, an asylum for the oppressed of all nations, and prepare the way for the restoration of the gospel of Christ and the establishment of his church upon the earth” – Heber J. Grant, Conference Report, April 1930.
PRESIDENT RUSSELL M. NELSON’S BOOK OF MORMON LISTS – OCT 2017
The Book of Mormon is: Another testament of Jesus Christ. Its major writers—Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, Moroni—and its translator, Joseph Smith, were all eyewitnesses of the Lord. 2. A record of His ministry to people who lived in ancient America. 3. True, as attested by the Lord Himself.
The Book of Mormon affirms: The individual identity of Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. 2. The necessity of the Fall of Adam and the wisdom of Eve, that men might have joy.
The Book of Mormon refutes notions that: Revelation ended with the Bible. 2. Infants need to be baptized. 3. Happiness can be found in wickedness. 4. Individual goodness is adequate for exaltation (ordinances and covenants are needed). 5. The Fall of Adam tainted mankind with “original sin.”
The Book of Mormon fulfills biblical prophecies that:“Other sheep” shall hear His voice. 2. God will do “a marvelous work and a wonder,” speaking “out of the dust.” 3. The “stick of Judah” and the “stick of Joseph” will become one. 4. Scattered Israel will be gathered “in the latter days” and how that will be done. 5. The land of inheritance for the lineage of Joseph is the Western Hemisphere.
The Book of Mormon clarifies understanding about: Our premortal existence. 2. Death. It is a necessary component of God’s great plan of happiness. 3. Postmortal existence, which begins in paradise. 4. How the resurrection of the body, reunited with its spirit, becomes an immortal soul. 5. How our judgment by the Lord will be according to our deeds and the desires of our hearts. 6. How ordinances are properly performed: for example, baptism, sacrament, conferring the Holy Ghost. 7. The Atonement of Jesus Christ. 8. The Resurrection. 9. The important role of angels. 10. The eternal nature of priesthood. 11. How human behavior is influenced more by the power of the word than the power of the sword.
The Book of Mormon reveals information previously unknown: 1. Baptisms were performed before Jesus Christ was born. 2. Temples were built and used by people in ancient America. 3. Joseph, 11th son of Israel, foresaw the prophetic role of Joseph Smith. 4. Nephi (in 600–592 BC) foresaw the discovery and colonizing of America. 5. Plain and precious parts of the Bible have been lost. 6. The Light of Christ is given to each person. 7. The importance of individual agency and the need for opposition in all things. 8. Warnings about “secret combinations.”
“Whenever I hear anyone, including myself say, I know the Book of Mormon is True, I want to exclaim that’s nice but it isn’t enough. We need to feel deep the inmost parts of our hearts that the Book of Mormon is unequivocally the word of God. We must feel it so deeply that we wouldn’t want to live even one day without it. I might paraphrase President Brigham Young in saying, I wish I had the voice of seven thunders to wake up the people to the truth and power of the Book of Mormon.” Elder Russell M. Nelson Sept 30, 2017 General Conference. Emphasis added.
What the Prophet asked in 2018 applies today in 2022. “Read the Book of Mormon between now and the end of the year. The Book of Mormon, as a revelation from God, possesses some advantage over the old scripture: it has not been tinctured by the wisdom of man, with here and there an Italic word to supply deficiencies. It was translated by the gift and power of God, by an unlearned man, through the aid of a pair of Interpreters, or spectacles—(known, perhaps, in ancient days as Teraphim, or Urim and Thummim) and while it unfolds the history of the first inhabitants that settled this continent, it, at the same time, brings a oneness to scripture, like the days of the apostles; and opens and explains the prophecies, that a child may understand the meaning of many of them; and shows how the Lord will gather his saints, even the children of Israel, that have been scattered over the face of the earth, more than two thousand years, in these last days, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the mount Zion. The Evening and The Morning Star, 1, no. 8 (January 1833): 58

“Learn for yourself—right now at your age—how to receive personal revelation. And nothing will make a bigger difference in your life than that!” “Hope of Israel,”
President Russell M. Nelson also declared, “Anytime you do anything that helps anyone—on either side of the veil—take a step toward making covenants with God and receiving their essential baptismal and temple ordinances, you are helping to gather Israel. It is as simple as that” (Russell M. Nelson, “Hope of Israel,

“The portions of the covenant that pertain to personal salvation and eternal increase are renewed with each individual who receives the ordinance of celestial marriage (see D&C 132:29–33). Those of non-Israelite lineage, commonly known as Gentiles, are adopted into the house of Israel and become heirs of the covenant and the seed of Abraham through the ordinances of the gospel (Gal. 3:26–29).
Being an heir to the Abrahamic covenant does not make one a “chosen person” per se but does signify that such are chosen to responsibly carry the gospel to all the peoples of the earth. Abraham’s seed have carried out the missionary activity in all the nations since Abraham’s day. (Matt. 3:9; Abr. 2:9–11.)”
Jacob’s prophecy about Ephraim and Manasseh, the two favorite sons of Joseph and Asenath, as well as the rest of the Tribes of Jacob is found in Genesis 48:21 and Jeremiah 31:10. Although Ephraim and Manasseh were not sons of Jacob like the other tribes of Israel, they were grafted into the Tribes of Jacob-Israel.

There must be a regathering and a second Greater Exodus out of Egypt once again as Christ must lead us all home to the promised land. I call it a possible Second Harvest.
Joseph and Joseph
As Joseph saved his family anciently, so Joseph of the last days will be a savior to Israel (D&C 86:11). As the Lord said to Jacob who was nearly blind, “Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes” (Genesis 46:4), so he has said to Israel of the last days: “For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith. For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory.” (D&C 21:5-6.) Shechem (Nablus): Joseph’s Tomb
By Nechama Golding
“Joseph’s Tomb” by David Roberts, 1839.
Amidst the mountains of Shomron (Samaria) is a four-thousand year old city named Shechem. (Red Marker Left). Very few biblical locales have as rich a history as this storied city. In fact, when the first Jew arrived in the Holy Land, Shechem was his first stop. In this city, also known as Nablus, lie the remains of Joseph, viceroy of Egypt. In recent times, modern-day Jewish heroes have struggled to maintain a Jewish presence in Shechem and Joseph’s Tomb.
History of Shechem c.1737 BC
When Abraham first entered the Land in 2023 (1737 BCE), his first stop was the “place of Shechem,” where G‑d appeared to him and promised: “To your descendants I will give this land.” This was the first time that G‑d informed our Patriarch of this ultimate intention.
Two generations later, returning from Charan with his wives and children, Jacob came to Shechem and purchased a piece of land on the perimeter of the town. The prince of the town, also named Shechem, abducted and violated Jacob’s daughter, Dina. Her brothers, Simon and Levi, rescued her and killed all the men of Shechem in retaliation.
Sixteen years later, Jacob sent 17-year old Joseph to “check on the welfare of his brothers” who were shepherding their father’s herds near Shechem. When Joseph found his brothers, they sold him into slavery, setting off a chain of events that would lead to the Egyptian exile.
Many years later, when the entire family was already in Egypt, Jacob promised the city of Shechem to Joseph. It would make up part of the territory of Joseph’s son, Ephraim.
Following the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua led the nation into the Land of Israel. As soon as they entered the Land, Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal, one of the two mountains flanking Shechem. (Recently, an archeologist claims to have discovered this altar on Mt. Ebal.)
Half of the nation then stood atop Mount Ebal and the other half atop Mount Gerizim, while the Levites who stood between the mountains shouted the curses they would be subjected to if they disobeyed G‑d the law, and the blessings they would receive if they obeyed.” Golding
Mount Ebal & Gerizim
As Moses was nearing the end of his mortal life, he wanted the Israelites to be able to choose to be blessed instead of cursed. To help the Israelites choose to be blessed, he instructed Joshua to set up a learning experience for Israel.
In Deuteronomy 27 “the Lord gave instructions about what was to happen once the children of Israel entered the promised land. They were to go to Shechem, which was located in a valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. (See map above). Moses instructed that half of the tribes of Israel should stand on Mount Gerizim and the other half should stand on Mount Ebal. The Levites were to stand in the valley between the two mountains and recite the actions that would result in blessings and those that would result in curses as designated by God. When actions resulting in curses were recited, as described in Deuteronomy 27:14–26, the tribes on Mount Ebal were to say “amen.” (See Joshua 8:33–35.) Although not specifically stated in the scriptures, it may have been that when the actions resulting in blessings were recited, the tribes on Mount Gerizim responded with “amen” as well.
Deuteronomy 28 further clarifies what the Lord wanted the Israelites to learn from this experience. Read Deuteronomy 28:1 and read Deuteronomy 28:15 What does the Lord say would bring either blessings or curses upon the people?
What did the Lord command the people to do to obtain the blessings and avoid the curses? The Lord said to keep all of His commandments.
Mount Gerizim represented the consequences for obeying God’s commandments and Mount Ebal represented the consequences for disobeying them.
If we choose to obey all of God’s commandments, He will bless us in all areas of our lives. If we choose not to obey all of God’s commandments, we lose the blessings He desires to give us.
Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, “[Have] faith to keep all the commandments of God, knowing that they are given to bless His children and bring them joy [see 2 Nephi 2:25]. [You] will encounter people who pick which commandments they will keep and ignore others that they choose to break. I call this the cafeteria approach to obedience. This practice of picking and choosing will not work. It will lead to misery. To prepare to meet God, one keeps all of His commandments” (“Face the Future with Faith,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2011, 34).
Although keeping all of God’s commandments may seem overwhelming, President Harold B. Lee said, “The most important of all the commandments of God is that one that you are having the most difficulty keeping today. If it is one of dishonesty, if it is one of unchastity, if it is one of falsifying, not telling the truth, today is the day for you to work on that until you have been able to conquer that weakness. … Then you start on the next one that is most difficult for you to keep” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Harold B. Lee [2000], 30). Source
Golding Continues, “The Jews then buried Joseph’s remains – which had been carried along from Egypt – in the plot of land which Jacob had bought, and designated Shechem as a City of Refuge and a Levite city.
Before Joshua died, he gathered the nation in Shechem and made a covenant between them and G‑d. He set up a stone in Shechem, and said, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord which He spoke to us; it shall be a witness against you, lest you deny your G‑d.”
Throughout the period of the Prophets and the Kings, the city of Shechem played a pivotal role. When King Solomon died, the people gathered in Shechem, and it was there that the Ten Tribes seceded from Davidic rule and formed the Northern Kingdom.
Eventually, Shechem also served as a stronghold for the Samaritans, an ethnic group that was transferred to the Holy Land by Sennacherib King of Assyria. Though they officially converted to Judaism, they retained their pagan practices and beliefs, and were consistently a thorn in the Jews’ side. [Remember the Good Samaritan Story]
After the destruction of the Temple, the Romans changed Shechem’s name to “Neapolis” (meaning “new city”); this then became “Nablus.” Nevertheless, although the Jewish nation was dispersed and weakened, there remained a continuous Jewish presence in Shechem, and Joseph’s Tomb stayed a focus of Jewish pilgrimage and prayer.
The late Dr. Zvi Ilan, one of Israel’s foremost archeologists, described Joseph’s Tomb as: “…one of the tombs whose location is known with the utmost degree of certainty and is based on continuous documentation since biblical times.”
“( John 4:5John 4:6 ). This is one of the few sites in Palestine about which there is no dispute. It was dug by Jacob, and hence its name, in the “parcel of ground” which he purchased from the sons of Hamor ( Genesis 33:19 ). It still exists, but although after copious rains it contains a little water, it is now usually quite dry. It is at the entrance to the valley between Ebal and Gerizim, about 2 miles south-east of Shechem. It is about 9 feet in diameter and about 75 feet in depth, though in ancient times it was no doubt much deeper, probably twice as deep. The digging of such a well must have been a very laborious and costly undertaking.” Source
Jacob’s Well (Arabic: بئر يعقوب, Bir Ya’qub, Greek: Φρέαρ του Ιακώβ, Fréar tou Iakóv, Hebrew: באר יעקב, Be’er Yaaqov; also known as Jacob’s fountain and Well of Sychar) is a deep well constructed from rock that has been associated in religious tradition with Jacob for roughly two millennia. It is situated inside an Eastern Orthodox church and monastery, in Balata village on the outskirts of the Palestinian city of Nablus in the West Bank.
Jewish, Samaritan, Christian, and Muslim traditions all associate the well with Jacob. The well is not specifically named in the Old Testament, but Genesis 33:18–20 states that when Jacob returned to Shechem from Paddan Aram, he camped “before” the city and bought the land on which he pitched his tent and erected an altar.
The present-day church containing the well has been built close to the archaeological site of Tell Balata, which is thought to be the site of biblical Shechem. Some Biblical scholars contend that the plot of land is the same one upon which Jacob’s Well was constructed. Other Biblical scholars have made note of the well discovered in the “open country” of the “land of the Kedemites” in Genesis 29 where Jacob meets his future bride, Rachel.
Jacob’s Well is mentioned by name once in the New Testament in a passage (John 4:5–6) which says that Jesus “came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the field which Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there.” John’s Gospel goes on to describe a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman (called Photini in Orthodox tradition), which took place while Jesus was resting at the well after a tiring journey.[4] (John 4:7–15) The site is counted as a Christian holy site. From a Christian perspective, the reference in John’s Gospel to the well seems to hint at a deeper nuptial reading of Jesus as the Bridegroom of Israel come to reunite the divided tribes through a spiritual union with him, the long-awaited Messiah; see St. Augustine’s Tractate 15 on the Gospel of John.” Wikipedia
JACOB LEAVES FOR BETHEL JACOB’S FAMILY GIVE UP THEIR IDOLS [GENESIS 35]
1 God told Jacob, “It’s time to move on. Go to Bethel and live there. Build an altar where you can worship the God who appeared to you there when you were on the run from your brother, Esau.”
2 Jacob told his family, “Get rid of all the idols you’ve accumulated. Purify yourselves by washing your bodies and changing into clean clothes.
3 We’re moving to Bethel. I will build an altar where we can worship the God who answered my prayers and came to my rescue when I was in trouble.”
4 The family gave Jacob all their idols along with their earrings. He buried it all under an oak tree near Shechem.
5 As Jacob’s caravan moved from Shechem to Bethel, all the people in the area became terrified of them, so they stayed away.
6 In time, Jacob’s caravan reached Luz, another name for Bethel, in the land of Canaan.
7 Jacob built an altar in worship of God, who had appeared to him there in a dream years ago when he was on the run from his brother. He named the place God of Bethel.
8 It wasn’t long after this that Rebekah’s elderly nurse, Deborah, died. The family buried her under an oak tree in a valley below Bethel. They named the tree Weeping Oak.
9 Now that Jacob was home from the land of Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again at Bethel with another blessing.
10 God said, “Your name is Jacob, but I don’t want anyone calling you that anymore. They should call you Israel. That’s your new name.” So God renamed him Israel.
11 Then God said, “I am God Almighty. Make yourself into a huge family. Your descendants will become not only a great nation, but many nations. Some of your people will become kings, too.12 I’m also passing onto you and your descendants the land I gave to Abraham and Isaac.” 13 After that, God left.
14 Jacob set up a large stone to mark the place where God spoke to him. He poured some wine over the rock, as an offering of thanks to God. He poured some olive oil, too, anointing the place as sacred.
15 Jacob named the place Bethel since this is where God spoke to him” Source: Casual English Bible
Shechem Today
In 1926, the Jewish inhabitants of Shechem were forced to leave in the face of Arab pogroms. A year later, an earthquake destroyed most of the Old City of Shechem, including the Jewish quarter.
With the Six Day War in 1967, Shechem and the surrounding areas reverted to Jewish control; however, while tourism in the area was encouraged, Jews were not permitted to live there.
The location of where Joseph was buried when the Israelites brought his bones back from Egypt.
Dedicated activists refused to accept this untenable situation, and as a result of their persistence there are now several established Jewish communities on the mountain ranges surrounding Shechem: Kedumim, Yitzhar, Har Bracha and Elon Moreh. Within Shechem itself, a yeshivah was formed at Joseph’s Tomb in 1982, called “Od Yosef Chai” (“Joseph still lives”—the famous words spoken to Jacob following many years that he presumed Joseph to be dead).
Unfortunately, the situation today is far from ideal. In 1996, Shechem was given over the Palestinian Authority. Joseph’s Tomb was to remain in Jewish hands, but in the early days of the 2000 terrorist offensive, that, too, was given up under fire. The Palestinian Authority promised to prevent damage to the site, but within a few hours a mob broke into the compound and destroyed everything. Furniture and holy books used by the yeshivah [A yeshiva is a place where Jews gather to study Torah and rabbinic traditions. Originally referring to an academy for advanced scholars, today the term also refers to Jewish elementary schools where Judaic studies comprise a significant portion of the curriculum] were burned and the place was reduced to rubble.

Jews weren’t allowed to visit the site again until 2003. Now there are a few visits a year which take place in the middle of the night. Recent visitors found the tomb in ruins and covered with garbage.
Mark Twain on Shechem
In 1867 Mark Twain visited Shechem. He described this visit in his diary which was later published. The following are some interesting excerpts:
“At two o’clock we stopped to lunch and rest at ancient Shechem, between the historic Mounts of Gerizim and Ebal, where in the old times the books of the law, the curses and the blessings, were read from the heights to the Jewish multitudes below.
“About a mile and a half from Shechem we halted at the base of Mount Ebal before a little square area, enclosed by a high stone wall, neatly whitewashed. Across one end of this enclosure is a tomb . . . It is the tomb of Joseph. No truth is better authenticated than this.
“Few tombs on earth command the veneration of so many races and men of diverse creeds as this of Joseph. Samaritan and Jew, Muslim and Christian alike, revere it, and honor it with their visits. The tomb of Joseph, the dutiful son, the affectionate, forgiving brother, the virtuous man, the wise Prince and ruler. Egypt felt his influence – the world knows his history.”
Regarding the city’s Jewish community he writes:
“For thousands of years this clan have dwelt in Shechem under strict taboo and having little commerce or fellowship with their fellowmen of any religion or nationality. For generations they have not numbered more than one or two hundred, but they still adhere to their ancient faith and maintain their ancient rites and ceremonies. Talk of family and old descent! … This handful of old first families of Shechem…can name their fathers straight back without a flaw for thousands [of years]…. I found myself gazing at any straggling scion of this strange race with a riveted fascination, just as one would stare at a living mastodon or a megatherium…”

Genesis 12:5, 6 – “Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land.”
“MOREH, OAK OF (Heb. אֵלֹ֣ון מﯴרֶ֑ה; KJV incorrectly: “Plain of Moreh”), mentioned in Genesis 12:6 as a place near Shechem where Abraham camped on arriving in Canaan from Haran. There God revealed Himself to Abraham with the promise to give Canaan to his descendants, whereupon Abraham responded by building his first altar to the Lord in Canaan. The name “Oak” or “Terebinth of Moreh,” may also be tr. “the teacher’s” or “the Diviners’ Oak.” It must have been a “holy” tree, and the place an old Canaanite sanctuary. Although it is difficult to understand Abraham’s motives for visiting this place, there is no reason to suggest that Abraham recognized the sacred character of the place, and willfully adapted himself to it. The reference to the Oak of Moreh merely serves to indicate the place where Abraham camped, and built his own altar.” Bibliography D. Baly, The Geography of the Bible, (1957); J. Simons, Geographical and Topographical Texts of the Old Testament (1959).
Map of Shechem (Old Testament)
The Location of Shechem
Shechem was located in Central Israel in a beautiful fertile valley between Mount Ebal on the north and Mount Gerizim to the south west with their bases at Shechem. It was about 35 miles north of Jerusalem and about 7 miles to the south east of Samaria.
Abraham and Shechem
When Abraham made his journey to the promised land, the land of Canaan, he came to Shechem and the LORD appeared to him saying “I will give this land to your offspring,” so Abraham built an altar to the LORD under the Terebinth Oak tree of Moreh at Shechem. The Bible says that at that time the “Canaanite was then in the land.”
Jacob and Shechem
Abraham’s grandson Jacob also came to Shechem and build a well there, known in the Bible as Jacob’s Well. When he returned from Paddan-Aram in Mesopotamia and re-entered the land of Canaan he arrived at Shechem (Gen 33:18 and Gen 34). The Bible says that Shechem was a Hivite city and Hamor was chief. Jacob purchased a parcel of a field which contained the well that he had dug there. Later Joseph was buried there (Josh 24:32).
Shechem in Israel’s History
When the land of Canaan was conquered and divided among the Israelites, Shechem was allotted to Ephraim, and finally assigned to the Levites as a city of refuge. It was here at Shechem that Joshua gave his final words before his death (Josh 24). This was of course the place where the blessings and curses were uttered from Mount Gerizim (Blessings), and Mount Ebal (Curses) Josh 8:33-35. Later the judge Gideon’s son Abimelech convinced the Shechemites to revolt and elect him as king (Judges 9:1). Later he destroyed the city and sowed it with salt. Later when Solomon had died all of Israel had assembled at Shechem and his son Rehoboam was made king. It was also here at Shechem that the 10 tribes of Israel rebelled and turned from the House of David to follow Jeroboam (1 Kings 12:16). Shechem was made capital of the northen kingdom of Israel. Later in the New Testament Shechem is mentioned as the place (Sychar) where Jesus met the woman at the well. (John 4).
Genesis 12:9-10 – “And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.” Shechem – Bible History (bible-history.com)
“Aaron Lipkin is an Israeli archeologist who presented his findings on Joshua’s Alter.
He was born in the US but his parents decided to live in Israel. As a boy, he read the Old Testament stories believing them to be true, so when he attended a high school in Israel, his teachers taught him that all of those Old Testament stories he was taught growing up were just fairy tales. (sound familiar?) He said these teachers were godless Jews and had an agenda. He said over half of the Jews in Israel today are this way which to me is very sad.
He was enraged by this teaching and could not believe these teachers would tell him and his classmates such a thing. He wanted to do something about it. In the mean time, he ends up marrying a Jewish girl who was raised in Egypt as a Jew. Her parents were Egyptians. So my thought was to what we had discussed earlier. He did talk about how there were Egyptians that were Jews over the years–actual Jews but I still don’t believe that those Egyptians were the ones who stayed with the Israelites talking them into creating a golden calf. But I digress….
So he becomes an archeologist by profession and is driven to find physical evidences of these Old Testament stories he believed to be true. It’s pretty involved but ends up finding another archeologist (Adam Zartal site here:) who had been digging for any remnants of biblical evidences in Israel and comes across an area that they find what they believe to be Joshua’s Alter. It was found in an area that had the land divided in 6 pieces that were in the shape of a foot. They don’t know the significance of the land shape.
The alter had a stone roof and floor and the normal stuff you would find in an Israeli temple. This whole temple site was covered in field stones because they believed that if you cut stones for alters or worshiping places with iron tools, it alters their sacredness. He believed it was covered to protect it from robbers and desecrators. He talked about how temples did not have steps leading up into the temple floor and I knew why!! He gave the scripture of why and said there were ramps which this temple site had. His drawing looked a lot like the temple in Zarahemla. So cool.
There is so much detail to what was done which I cannot relay here but it was a fascinating story. Apparently to make findings official in any archeological dig, there has to be an end report submitted to the officials. Aaron said if any Israeli had submitted this end report about Jacob’s alter, their career would be destroyed by the academics in Israel so he found an archeologist in Texas who agreed to take on this project.
Originally Adam Zartal, the original archeologist only did the dry sifting of the dirt in the area of this alter but the Texan archeologist wanted to do a wet sifting as well because you can find a lot more with water and they did. One of the things they found was a very small lead square that was folded over with something in the middle. (Kind of like a mezuzah.) They were able to scan the inside to find old Hebrew (slide attached) writings referring to some of the rules of law from Deuteronomy. They also found the stylist that was used to write the message and the message was in Chiasmus form as well.
The end result being that this end report will be coming out in a few months by the Texan archeologist which will prove that at least one of the stories of the Old Testament is true. He thinks this will unwind the academia in Israel. They might keep it quiet but if Aaron and this Texan guy has anything to do with it–they will broadcast it from the roof tops.
After Aaron’s presentation, I talked with him about our dilemma. Telling him about a group of Jewish people coming to the Americas and how the first belief was that they landed and lived in Central and South America but in actuality they came to the area of the United States and that as a group of Heartland Research people, we are having the same difficulty of helping others know it was in the United States not Central America. We mentioned the relics that had the 10 commandments written on it, etc.
Anyway, he has gone back to Israel now but I have his email address and want to write him more about what we are doing.” Valerie Steimle. We thank Valerie for sharing this information with us.

Why was the Altar in Joshua 22:10–34 such a big deal?
ANSWER
After the conquest of Canaan, while Joshua was still alive, an altar was built that caused quite a stir and almost led to civil war in the newly founded nation of Israel. When God revealed the Law of Moses, God prohibited the building of altars other than those He had commanded (Deuteronomy 12:1–14). Yet the tribes on the east side of the Jordan River—Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh—constructed an altar in Joshua 22. As a result, the western tribes felt the Law had been violated and intended to go to war against their own people.
The western tribes had such a strong response to the altar in Joshua 22 because of the command in Deuteronomy 13:12–16: “If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, ‘Let us go and worship other gods’ (gods you have not known), then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt.”
The tribal leaders west of the Jordan followed this law exactly. In Joshua 22 they heard of an altar; since there was no Mosaic authorization to build such an altar, the western tribes suspected the altar in Joshua 22 represented the beginnings of idolatry. Fortunately for all involved, the western tribes investigated the allegation to discover the truth of the situation before they went to war. As it turned out, the altar built by Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh was a memorial to the Lord God. The eastern tribes were separated from their brethren by geography, but they wanted to show their spiritual solidarity. They had built the altar on the east side of the Jordan to show their connection to the rest of the Israelites who lived in the Promised Land proper. The altar was a sign of unity, not rebellion.
Joshua 22 concludes the matter of the suspicious altar on a good note: the high priest, Phinehas, says to Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is with us, because you have not been unfaithful to the LORD in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the LORD’s hand” (Joshua 22:31). Phinehas cleared the eastern tribes of all charges of idolatry. Then, “they were glad to hear the report and praised God. And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived” (Joshua 22:33).
The incident of the altar in Joshua 22 points to the importance of not jumping to conclusions or making assumptions not based on fact. In Nicodemus’ defense of Christ before the Sanhedrin, he emphasizes that the Law does not allow for rash judgments: “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” (John 7:51; cf. Proverbs 18:13).
Later in Israel’s history, after Joshua’s death, idolatry would indeed become a problem for God’s people. The Book of Judges reveals that idol worship soon became common among the Israelites, leading to God’s judgment upon them. Yet, in this early stage of Israel’s possession of the Promised Land, they quickly sought to obey God’s laws and preserve the unity of the tribes (see Psalm 133:1). https://www.gotquestions.org/Joshua-altar.html
“‘You shall make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.(Exodus 20:24) ‘If you make an altar of stone for Me, you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it. ‘And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, so that your nakedness will not be exposed on it.’ ” (Exodus 20:25-26)
Another Point of View
On April 6, 1980, Adam Zertal, Ph.D, Prof. Of Archeology, Univ. of Haifa was doing a formal archaeological survey of the traditional lands of Manasseh and discovered a Hebrew Altar that dated to 1250 BC. Using pottery to date the site Zertal said: “More important, however, is that they [the pottery] fix a date for the construction of the altar – approximately 1250 B.C.E.” (Adam Zertal 2004 AD) Zertal is the author of “A Nation is Born: The Mt. Ebal Altar and the Beginnings of the Nation of Israel”. See also: (Zertal, A. 1986/87 An Early Iron Age Cultic Site on Mt. Ebal: Excavation Seasons 1982-1987. Tel Aviv 13-14: 105-65. 1993.) and (The New Encyclopedia of Archaeological Excavation in the Holy Land, Vol. 1, ed. E. Stern. Jerusalem: Israel Exploration Society and Carta. Ebal, Mount. Pp. 375-77)
“We would humbly invite Adam Zertal to read this paper on the Exodus being at 1446 BC, not 1250 BC. The altar changed him from a Bible skeptic to a Bible believer. We suggest that he go all the way and accept the Bible’s date of 1406 BC when Joshua built his altar. Zertal probably knows enough about the site that he could actually make a good case for this round ring of rocks being dated to 1406 BC, but simply could not because he mistakenly believed the exodus happened in 1250 BC. If he accepts the Bible’s date of the exodus of 1446, then he can date the 6.5 foot diameter circle of stones up to 150 years earlier and still be within the time Israel crossed the Jordan. He can contact the author (Steven Rudd) by email here if he wishes further discussion.”
Archaeology of Joshua’s Altar:
Steven Rudd personally met Adam Zertal at the very site of Joshua’s Altar where he discussed the find under the watchful eye of an IDF ground army escort including F-16s in November 2004. Trips are often thwarted by the terrorists in the area. One ill-fated tour, in October 2000, ended with the death of Rabbi Binyamin Herling, one of several hikers who left the main route and were shot at by Palestinian terrorists in Shechem. The army was widely accused of not taking offensive action to save the hikers when the terrorists pinned them down with long-range but accurate fire. A later trip to the same area during Chanukah was canceled by the army with just two days notice, because of intelligence warnings of another planned terror attack. On October 7, 2000, Joseph’s Tomb, the third most holy place in Judaism, was destroyed by Muslims. It is located east of modern Nabulus between Shechem (Tel Balata) and Sychar at the foot of Mt. Ebal. It had come under attack and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) withdrew after gaining reassurances from the Palestinian Authority (PA) that they would protect the site in accordance with their obligations under the Oslo Accords to protect holy sites. Two hours after the withdrawal Muslims began destroying the site. Joseph’s Tomb was burned and torn down stone by stone, then bulldozed. It was immediately declared a Muslim holy site. I was extremely fortunate and privileged to be one of the first to visit Joshua’s Altar in AD 2004, although the army did cut short my visit for “security reasons”. I also assisted in reconstruction of the outer temenos wall of the altar under Adam Zertal’s personal supervision. https://www.bible.ca/archeology/bible-archeology-altar-of-joshua.htm#curse
To me personally this title, “Warrior Up”, means: become stronger in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Be like the Savior is. Be the best I can be as I am created in His image. Become selfless in combatting evil, be strong, and make a difference.
This is the personal opinion of Rian Nelson. I love the Lord Jesus Christ and I commit all judgement unto Him. John 5:22
Like many of you, I was horrified about this last killing of children and teachers in the United States again. Shock and sadness fill my soul each time a senseless tragedy happens. I absolutely know the only person to blame is Satan and the 18 year-old who pulled a trigger. People usually ask, “Why did he do this”? I believe that is the wrong question. We should ask, “What can I personally do to help” or, “How can I turn this tragedy into a better situation for the people affected, so that I may be a better person?” Prayer for the victims family IS IMPORTANT. Many say it isn’t, so what do they do? Get mad and try and find someone to blame. That’s wrong but sometimes it makes some people feel better.
God allows tragedy and evil in the world of free agency. We cannot rid the world of evil, but we can take a personal stand against it, and avoid evil as strongly as we can. When trials and evil happens, we can either become angry, or turn to God for strength to endure and grow in spirit.
We also must understand the Lord’s plan of forgiveness as he said, “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” Mark 11:25-26 It’s very hard to forgive, but that is the best answer. Holding onto hate, never helps anyone.
Why should we judge others and why should we only worry about why it happened? Give it to the Lord as he will welcome home each and every victim of this tragedy and all similar events to His Bosom. As the scriptures say, “…Let us appoint judges, to judge this people according to our law; and we will newly arrange the affairs of this people, for we will appoint wise men to be judges, that will judge this people according to the commandments of God. Now it is better that a man should be judged of God than of man, for the judgments of God are always just, but the judgments of man are not always just.” Mosiah 29:11-12
I realize that today, man’s judgement may not be absolutely just, but unless we vote for better people we will get the same evil judges and politicians. So, don’t ask why did this happen, but ask how can I help? What can I do to be a better citizen? How can I help the families of those who suffered? Will I work harder in my own community of making our schools safer? Will I volunteer on a school board and become active in the fight against evil?
You are free to sit around and talk about things that won’t help the situation, such as: blame the gun or the knife, or blame the mental capacity of the boy, or blame the parents for not raising this boy correctly, or lament that we need more control over people and guns. It may however be better if you simply say, What can I personally do to make this situation better? Or, How can I turn this tragedy into something positive? God will judge and you and I should stop worrying on who or what to blame and spend more time on love, forgiveness and repentance. Look inward, not outward! Christ is our ultimate judge and He is perfect in his judgement.
I am blessed to know an amazing warrior and friend, Jason Mow. He has inspired people in his service to State and Country and now he inspires us as men and women by sharing his “Warrior Ethos” message. I am honored that he would share the following article that I may place on this blog for each of your to read. It is powerful and should be summitted to the Ensign. If you love God and hate evil, this article will get you to stand up and cheer, as Jason puts into perspective the importance of the Book of Mormon and our Savior Jesus Christ.
Warrior Up! by Jason Mow
“I am heart sick my friends, heart sick with the news and images of more dead children, the victims of an unthinkable and unspeakable act.
I am grieved to see that, once again, before the crime scene tape has been taken down the taking heads and political gamers are shouting and profiting off the blood of our murdered young ones.
I am heart sick to once again be reminded that pure evil exists and that it has again been given cover by political correctness.
I am heart sick with my own memories bubbling up of all the dead and injured kids from crime, war, and disasters I have dealt with over my last 30 years of uniformed armed service.
I am heart sick with the thoughts of feeling powerless.
I am heart sick, I am tired, I am angry, I am insulted, I am confused, I am overwhelmed with emotions, I am ready to lash out in anger……I am right where evil wants me to be.
This latest school shooting brought me right to the edge of my peaceful convents and I almost forgot who I am and Whom I serve. I was ready to act emotionally and not logically. I was ready to forget the grand design and eternal plan for all of us and follow my carnal heart. But the better angles of my nature walked me back a step and I remembered who I am. I am here, now, intentionally, during this most troublesome time for a purpose. That purpose is to serve the Living God!
So, as I explore my perspective, the next natural question is, how? How do I as a “Christian” serve God and exist…survive…thrive…and bring others to Christ, in this fallen world. How do I function after hearing of yet another tragedy involving children? How do I function knowing evil is walking openly on the earth and that it has infiltrated every part of our daily lives?
I am reminded of two stores in the Book of Mormon, a second witness and ancient spiritual record (like the Bible) of Christians who lived on the American content before during and after the time of Christ.
The first storyis of the great Prophet Alma and his missionary companion Amulek. They were preaching in a wicked city and the local leaders were incensed by the words Alma and Amulek were saying. They were being called out as hypocrites and exposed as evil by the Prophet and in response the leaders put them in prison. Then, the wives and children of all the men who followed the Prophet, were taken to a great fire pit and thrown in as Alma and Amulek were forced to watch.
Are we not now like Alma and Amulek and being forced to watch as our families are being destroyed by pure evil? Are not our children being “tossed” today into metaphorical burning pits by dark hearted men and women who are bent on destroying our families, our freedoms and the church of God? Is this story not relative for our time?
How did Alma the Great and his most worthy companion respond to evil?
Book of Alma Chapter 14 (Book of Mormon)
10 And when Amulek saw the pains of the women and children who were consuming in the fire, he also was pained; and he said unto Alma: How can we witness this awful scene? Therefore let us stretch forth our hands, and exercise the power of God which is in us, and save them from the flames.
11 But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day.
The second story that comes to mind is of an event involving the Stripling Warriors. The Stripling Warriors were the young sons of a band of Christians who, in response to their paths of forgiveness, vowed to never again take up the sword and spill blood. When war came to their country the young sons, who did not take the oath, vowed to stand in place for their fathers and fight the invading Lamanites.
They were led to war by the Lord’s Prophet of that time whose name was Helaman. These young “Stripling” Warriors knew nothing of war. They were not men at arms, or trained and experienced soldiers. They were simple farmers hands, sheep herders and apprentices.
But when faced with the evil of their time they stood and faced the hordes of invading Lamanites who were bent on murder, plunder and taking slaves.
Book of Alma Chapter 56 ( Book of Mormon)
45 And now I say unto you, my beloved brother Moroni, that never had I seen so greatcourage, nay, not amongst all the Nephites.
46 For as I had ever called them my sons (for they were all of them very young) even so they said unto me: Father, behold our God is with us, and he will not suffer that we should fall; then let us go forth; we would not slay our brethren if they would let us alone; therefore let us go, lest they should overpower the army of Antipus.
47 Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them………..
56 But behold, to my great joy, there had not one soul of them fallen to the earth; yea, and they had fought as if with the strength of God; yea, never were men known to have fought with such miraculous strength; and with such mighty power did they fall upon the Lamanites, that they did frighten them; and for this cause did the Lamanites deliver themselves up as prisoners of war.
Two stories from the same sacred book of scripture. Two stores of powerful servants of God who are facing men and women with the evilest of intents. But each of those stories are polar opposites in response to evil. One stood with the power to make it end and save the people, but allowed that horror to happen all the while trusting God’s eternal plan and his enteral judgments. The second story is of young men, risking their very lives by physically standing against evil in armed conflict, also trusting God’s eternal plan and his enteral judgments.
So why the two stories? Why show us two different responses to evil with two different outcomes? Which one is right? Which one do we follow when dealing with today’s manifestation of evil?
I would submit to you my brothers and sisters that they are both right. That if you listen to the stories again and look at them with another perspective, a Warrior’s perspective, you will see the underlined answers. They both followed the Prophet of God, they were guided by the Spirit and regardless of the pain, they never doubted.
So, how are we going to exist… survive…thrive…and bring others to Christ, in this fallen world? Answer….by having a personal relationship with Christ, by having the Holy Ghost as our personal companion and by following the Prophet!
Art by Ken Corbett
Our own Prophet, Russel M. Nelson said during his first general conference as President of the Church.
“In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting
and constant influence of the Holy Ghost,”
This is sage counsel and a prophetic warning for the world.
There is one more story from the Book of Mormon that helps me understand the Warrior perspective and what I can do as a Christian man to be a more useful servant of God.
Book of Alma Chapter 48 (Book of Mormon)
14 Now the Nephites were taught to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding of blood if it were necessary; yea, and they were also taught give an offense, yea, and never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy, except it were to preserve their lives.
15 And this was their faith, that by so doing God would prosper them in the land, or in other words, if they were faithful in keeping the commandments of God that he would prosper them in the land; yea, warn them to flee, or to prepare for war, according to their danger;
16 And also, that God would make it known unto them whither they should go to defend themselves against their enemies, and by so doing, the Lord would deliver them; and this was the faith of Moroni, and his heart did glory in it; not in the shedding of blood but in doing good, in preserving his people, yea, in keeping the commandments of God, yea, and resisting iniquity.
17 Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.
We should want to shake the very powers of Hell. We should want to deny the Devil power of the hearts of men….so, instead of getting angry and doing exactly what evil wants me to do.
Here is what I am going to do now.
I will follow the Prophet. If he says hold, I will hold. If he says fight, I will fight. If he says flee, I will flee.
l prepare myself and my family to respond to evil on all four fronts, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
I will keep and maintain myself in a manner of worthiness necessary to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion.
Through continued education, preparation and experiences, I will made myself a blessing not a burden to others.
I will keep an eternal perspective.
I will be of service.
I will have unwavering faith in our Fathers Plan.
I know I will be held accountable before God on what I do now. Stand with me
And be not moved. We are the hope of Israel. Not one more step back!
