FINAL ANSWER: Yes, and when you do, please communicate with the Spirit of Christ. We don’t have to be afraid to dissent about secondary evidence of the Book of Mormon, as long as we are informed. In other words, when we explore and research and prayerfully decide about where the geography of the Book of Mormon may have begun, or if there was one or two Hill Cumorah’s; as we are informed and feel a spirit of personal revelation, we can calmly dissent with those who may disagree. Not argue or disparage others, but simply dissent based on our personal revelation. In fact, a testimony comes with the confirmation of the spirit after reading and praying about the truth of the Book of Mormon, which is all you may need at the beginning, and you may then choose to continue to read and pray all the days of your life to keep that strong testimony, and add upon it, and you may continue to understand more about the secondary evidences of the Book of Mormon.

I agree with the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr., along with our current Prophet, Russell M. Nelson. I love them both and I know this Church is true with divine Priesthood, and the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I realize that when the Prophet gives a revelation, which then becomes doctrine, I will always follow that doctrine as led by the Spirit. When the Leaders of the Church urge us or recommend something, they do their duty of warning, preaching, and trying to help us in this difficult world. Individual answers are all around each of us, and the Lord will guide us based on our faith, research, and study to know what is right. Personal revelation is most important as it comes from God. However, we must be hesitant to share personal revelation as if we are speaking for the Church, or any other individual or Church leader. We are all accountable to Christ individually, not collectively.

I believe the best evidence of the geography are the words the Lord used. “Promised Land” or “Chosen Land”. In D&C 28, 30, and 32, the Lord went with the missionaries to the Lamanites. Parley P Pratt said the first mission to the Lamanites was in NY, OH, and MO. Where is it referring to, when it is mentioned, Promised Land or mission to the Lamanites etc.? Greenland, Brazil, Guatemala, Ontario, simply anywhere in the “Americas? I love all the people of the world and with a special affinity for the Lamanites, wherever they live. But, in my opinion the Book of Mormon events began in the Heartland of America, and through war, marriage, migration, or other causes, many parts of the western United States, South and Central America and the world in general, may have the blood of Father Lehi today. I know the Church is neutral on this subject, and they only say the beginning of the Lehites was “Somewhere in the Americas”. But I believe today’s Native Americans in mostly the eastern area of North America, have the same Hebrew blood as the Tribe of Judah. I appreciate the Church’s opinion and other Historians as well, but for me, the beginning of the Lehites was in this Promised Land of America, near Florida.
In addition, there is no official doctrine from our Church on the method or instruments of Joseph Smith’s translation. I also know there is no scripture that says a “stone in a hat” was used to translate, but there are many scriptural witnesses that Joseph used the spectacles attached to the breastplate that he received from Moroni, in the stone box at Cumorah NY, with the gold plates as the instruments for Joseph to utilize.
In a Church video with Pres Nelson, called, “The Book of Mormon Is Tangible Evidence of the Restoration”, our Prophet says, beginning at the 3:30 mark the following: ” Quite miraculous, really, through the gift and power of God. We have a lot of suggestions about how it was done.” This seems to indicate Pres Nelson was suggesting “one” way it may have happened, not “the” way it happened. He has obviously had historians tell him how it may have been done. You can’t find even one scripture that mentions a stone in a hat, but there are many that mention the two stones fastened to a breastplate. (See, JSH 1:35,52,62,75*; Mosiah 28:13, 20; Ether 3:22-23; 4:5; Alma 37:21- 24).
I believe D&C 125 tells us that the City Zarahemla, was across the Mississippi River from Nauvoo. Pioneer Edward Phillips says, “I have a Patriarchal blessing hanging in a frame in my room, which was pronounced upon my head by the prophet and patriarch, Hyrum Smith, in the fall of 1844[1843?], which is worth more than gold to me – Gold is no name for it. The predictions are being literally fulfilled every day. I know if I prove faithful it will all come to pass. I knew then and also know now that Joseph was a true prophet of God, and that the mantle of Joseph fell on Brigham Young who was his legal successor.
I was present at the meeting when this took place and heard with my own ears and saw with my own eyes. We all thought Joseph had come back to us although we knew he was in his grave. I was standing by the temple talking to Brother Woodruff and he pointed out a spot to me on the opposite side of the river about a mile and a half above Montrose and said there would be a city and a temple built there and the place would be called Zarahemla. I was at Nauvoo when the temple was finished and dedicated. I went up into the tower and wrote my name there. As I understand, the wicked have burned that temple to the ground and it is all destroyed like the Jerusalem temple.
