I received an email a few years ago from a fellow Latter-day Saint and I found it most enjoyable to answer him. If someone is struggling with faith, many times a great part of the problem is struggling by not receiving answers that make sense to us. We have many Apologists in the Church who are trying to help.
I define myself as an Apologist or better a defender of truth about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As well, those on the Mesoamerican side of Geography, are also Apologists, which is defined as: “a person who defends or supports something (such as a religion, cause, or organization) that is being criticized or attacked by other people.” We just need to know by the Spirit which apologist to believe. Here is the email I received in blue:
“I have been a member of the LDS Church for 42 years having converted in my hometown Liverpool England at age 20 years of age. I have not been active in the Church for a number of years but always had a testimony despite my not being that active. I kept the word of wisdom and would defend the Church from critics.
I have recently had my doubts about the truthfulness of the Church having started to study the history of the Church and the things that have come to light such as Seer Stones, Joseph Smith polygamy, polyandry and the age of some of his wives. I have read articles from ex-members and non-members who are critical of the Church and they make some powerful points however, I look at all points of view and also read and view articles from Fair Mormon and Wayne May. One question I have is related to archaeology. I know that digs and excavations have taken place in Central and South America. Given the plates were buried in Hill Cumorah and that there was a battle conducted in the area why has there not been any digs or finds in that area that would correlate to the Book of Mormon people. I would be grateful if someone could respond.” Many Thanks John …
Below is the response I shared with him.
I received your email from Joseph Smith Foundation, who are my good friends named James Stoddard and the family including Hannah Leah, Isaiah, Ephraim and Mary. James oldest daughter, Hannah leads them very faithfully.. They are very active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as I am. I work with Rod Meldrum, and Jonathan Neville who are also very active members of the Church. I think the most important people for you to speak with about your questions are as follows:
#1 The Lord
#2 The Scriptures
#3 Your Bishop
#4 Church’s websitechurchofjesuschrist.org
#4 Apologists (Defined as people in good standing with the Church that share very informed opinions and serve as a strong defense for the Church), like us. *Don’t speak with someone who is opposed to your beliefs or Church. *Call on the Lord again and again and you can receive Personal Revelation
Remember all humans including Prophets, Bishops and members, make mistakes. Most of your answers should come from the scriptures and from the spirit of the Lord. You may not always feel you get answers that way, so at times we rely too much on the Church Prophet speaking as a man, or on a website or with an apologist, but we should then always take everything to the Lord for confirmation. Man has opinions and suggestions, but not ultimate answers of truth, as the Lord’s Spirit does testify.
Brigham Young said, “There is nothing that would so soon weaken my hope and discourage me as to see this people in full fellowship with the world and receive no more persecution from them because they are one with them. In such an event, we might bid farewell to the Holy Priesthood with all its blessings, privileges, and aids to exaltations, principalities and powers in the eternities of the Gods. (JD 10:32)” Brigham Young
Since your question is so important to me I want you to know where I am coming from so you can make up your own mind if I speak the truth or not. I want to give you the websites of some Apologists like me and the people above I mentioned that could help you.
I would like you to know the most important thing I learned from your email, is that you are hanging on [Better stated, Enduring to the end], due to your faith in the Savior. You understand that the only way to know the Book of Mormon is true is to read, ponder and pray about it, and if you are sincere, the Spirit will witness of its truthfulness as it has to you and it has to myself. If that book is true, then Joseph Smith is, and was a Prophet of the Lord Jesus Christ. Don’t get caught up in all the chatter about polygamy and seer stones until your faith is so strong that you absolutely know by the Spirit that the Book of Mormon is true. I will give you some ideas to help reduce that clutter as well.
Here is a wonderful article to read from Elder Holland that will explain that things of the Spirit and of the Head are both important, and those things we research and learn are a necessary second witnesses to the truth of the Book of Mormon. See the Article Here: and You Tube Here:
Understand there are many Apologists and most all of us love the Lord and this True Church, but we all have a different interpretation of some very important issues. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is neutral on some positions that we as Apologists are not neutral. For example the Church is neutral on the questions about geography, evolution, and DNA. No apologist can receive revelation about any Doctrine of the Church. We can only share our personal witnesses and beliefs.
There are many complicated issues and the Church tells you many non-doctrinal answers on the Gospel Topic Essays Here. Since the Church is neutral on some of these issues, you will find that very few Apologists are neutral on their personal opinions. We each answer the questions below differently. There are however two main apologist groups.
1-Those who believe the Book of Mormon first events happened in Mesoamerica (Called M2C) which means they believe there are two Hill’s, one in NY where the plates were buried, and one on a hill someplace in Mexico where the final battles of the Book of Mormon happened). 2- Those like myself who believe the events of the Book of Mormon happened in the Heartland of the United States (Called the Heartland Model), we believe the Hill Cumorah in upstate NY is both the place the plates were found, and it is also the same place where the final battles happened for both the Nephites and the Jaredites.) Ether 15:11Mormon 6:6
There are over 50 other theories of where the events began or happened (Baja, South America, Malaysia, New York area, etc), but the above two are the majority of beliefs in the vast majority of the Church.
I am happy to answer where I stand on each subject listed below. It really comes down to this. Is there one Hill Cumorah which many Prophets and Apostles speak about [See Here], or are there two Hill’s as those with many different theories say, there has to be a 2nd Hill in Malaysia, Baja, South America, Mexico, Chile, etc. There is a third theory that is very small called the New York Theory, who believe in one Hill Cumorah but they believe all events happened only in New York around the Great Lakes which we think is too small of an area. I believe the Book of Mormon geography includes the City Zarahemla (D&C 125) which is across the Mississippi River from Nauvoo called Montrose, Iowa, and extends to Hill Cumorah in NY and is the area north of the Ohio River to the south.
Hinterland Theory or Limited Model [LM]
In the early 1900’s the Church and many others believed the entire South America was the land South and where the Lamanites lived, and the entire North America was North and where the Nephites lived, and the narrow Isthmus of Tehuantepec or Panama, between the two Continents was the narrow neck of land. This was called the “Hemispheric Theory” [HM] of the Book of Mormon, which the Mesoamerican Theory people, and the Heartland Theory people, don’t believe any more. Both groups believe in the Hinterland Model of LM. [As shown in the map left. Most all under stand the events of the Book of Mormon could not be held in that large of an area as the entire Western Continent. Both sides agree that Lehi traveled from Jerusalem paralleling the Red Sea and then heading east at Nahom to Oman near Khar Kharfoot, where the first Land Bountiful was. The M2Cer, believes that Lehi traveled east by boat toward India and around the Pacific Ocean to land near Guatemala and spreading out in a Limited area surrounding Mexico near Guatemala. Heartlanders believe Lehi traveled SW from Oman sailing around Africa and landed in the Gulf of Mexico near Tallahassee Florida [Both called Limited Models LM, or Hinterland Hypothesis].
Many Heartlanders are Conservative or believe in the Traditional history of the Church. Many in the M2C camp are more Liberal or Intellectual and believe in the Revisionist history of the Church. I feel many Traditional Mormons would answer questions about sensitive non-doctrinal issues, similar to me as follows:
DNA- We (Heartlanders) believe there is Hebrew DNA in many Native American Indians near the Great Lakes of the Algonquian and Iroquois tribes. Only Asian DNA has been found amongst the people of South, Central and Western America, such as amongst other Western Native Americans of the United States and Alaska. We believe most of those living in the South Pacific Islands are of Israelite blood, (Hagoth or Mixture of Joseph and Judah) We haven’t found Hebrew DNA markers for those in South and Central America. We have found DNA evidence of Natiive Americans in the Great Lakes area with Hebrew Haplogroup X, that is also found in the Jerusalem area. M2C believe the Asian DNA found in Central America is because the Asian population over took any Hebrew DNA that may have existed during the time of Lehi. Evolution: We do not believe a cat could evolve into a dog and we don’t believe an ape can evolve into Man. A poodle may be able to become a a different species of dog, however. We do believe in evolution defined as change or adaptation within a species. Most intellectuals believe we plausibly evolved from and ape. Translation of the Gold Plates: We believe they were translated by the gift and power of God, with Joseph using the breastplate and two clear stones in a silver bow (Like spectacles) attached to the breastplate [see JSH 1:35], that were found in the same hill as the plates. Most M2C followers believe the stone in the hat method of translation. Seer Stones: We believe Joseph had several seer stones that were used as beautiful stones or for faithful things by Joseph, but Joseph did not use the seer stones he found near Palmyra, by putting one or more stones into his hat to translate the the Book of Mormon. If he did use this method, he would be just reading words from a seer stone that someone gave him to be written down so he wouldn’t have “translated” the plates but just would have dictated the words to Oliver. Politics- We are mostly very conservative, love the US Constitution and our Founding Fathers. We believe in the right to bear arms and freedom of speech. Most of us don’t agree with many of the politics of liberal left leanings, and we love the great freedoms that have been given to us as conservatives. We don’t approve of the socialized version of big government. We believe in prayer to choose our best leaders. Polygamy- [better understood as “Celestial Plural Marriage” in the Church]. We believe Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were following the commandments of God just as Abraham and others were instructed. Satan just uses this highly controversial idea to get us to doubt things and creates evil ideas between sides. Only about 3% of the entire church ever practiced polygamy, [Celestial Plural Marriage]. We believe when the Lord commands us, we should listen. Joseph Smith restored an important part of the Gospel. Science- We believe the dinosaurs lived during the Old Testament and were created just before Adam, and were killed during the great world wide flood. We also believe that most rocks you see today were created during the flood which was an event that happened at about 2345 BC. Most Intellectuals believe the dinosaurs are millions of years old and some believe the flood was a regional flood, as Heartlanders believe the flood was universal. Creationism- We believe Adam was the first man on earth and Eve the first woman placed on this earth around 4,000 BC, and the earth is only about 13,000 years old, [Young Earth] but the material of the earth is billions of years old, or eternal, as matter cannot be created but has existed forever. Many intellectuals believe the earth is 4.5 billion [Old Earth] years old as the consensus on google says. Many M2Cer also believe in cave men and men on earth before Adam. We don’t.
Just so you know, many who we call the M2C [Mesoamerican 2 Cumorah] theory, do not believe the way many Traditionalists believe. Those of the M2C theory are just as valiant as Heartlanders are in the Church, and both are trying to help others as we are. We just have different beliefs is some matters that are not doctrinal.
Below are the websites that believe M2C: Also many BYU professors are part of these websites. Some of these websites are listed on the Church website as approved Apologists for the Church. What that means to many on these M2C websites is they are neutral on the questions I answered, which I don’t believe. I believe many in these organizations are against Heartlanders beliefs about geography, translation instruments, age of earth and other non-doctrinal issues. Heartlanders are not neutral on geography, as we believe there is only one Hill Cumorah, and the final battles happened around the Hill Cumorah, and the majority believe Joseph did not use a rock in a hat to translate, but as scripture says, in JSH 1:35, and other places, that Joseph used the breastplate and the spectacles that were in the stone box with the gold plates. Please don’t just take my word for it, read and ponder and pray and the Lord will help you.
Here are several articles I wrote about artifacts found around Hill Cumorah. At my blog, just do a search for any subject and you will find some help. https://bookofmormonevidence.org/many-bones-at-cumorah/ https://bookofmormonevidence.org/history-near-hill-cumorah/

I love truth and it is seldom an easy thing to find, yet finding it, is most enjoyable when we understand it. If we pass this test of life, as the Lord has promised we may have all the things that He has. I know part of the test is how we treat others who disagree with us. No one knows all truth, and we try and work together to ultimately live as the Savior wants, and build up the Kingdom of God on earth. What a wonderful goal to work towards. May the Lord bless you my friends.

Below is a video about coming together of two side’s with Rod Meldrum of FIRM Foundation speaking on the same stage at the FIRM Foundation Conference April 20, 2024, with new President of Scripture Central [Book of Mormon Central] Richard Ferguson, about working together to find truth about the Book of Mormon.
First of all I want to share with you some wonderful and amazing quotes and information from or about our Prophet Wilford Woodruff. These are not in any particular order, but ones I have saved and shared many times. Many of them dealing directly with the geography of the Book of Mormon, proper translation, prophecy, and many other things.
Then I will share with you an article in Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation, when a celebration of his 90th birthday at the Salt Lake Tabernacle on 1 March 1897, he was greeted by the largest crowd ever assembled in that building. And then I will share with you an amazing vision, written and put on video recorded in Woodruff’s journal called John Taylor’s Last Days Vision. We don’t know for sure if it was a vision of John Taylor’s or someone else, but it must have been significant if it was recorded by Wilford Woodruff, who is known as one of the greatest record keepers in the entire church. In fact you will love this quote from Elder Boyd K. Packer about President Wilford Woodruff as Pres. Woodruff warned, “I will here say that God has inspired me to keep a Journal History of this Church, and I warn the future Historians to give Credence to my History of this Church and Kingdom; for my Testimony is true, and the truth of its record will be manifest in the world to Come.”(The Mantle Is Far, Far Greater Than the Intellect Elder Boyd K. Packer)
I will lastly share from Wilford Woodruff’s journal as you will hear an amazing last days vision, sometimes associated with John Taylor. It is a gruesome and scary vision, that may come about in our society today. What he saw is mind boggling and hopefully it will wake you and I wake up to the evil that there is in this world, so we can stay true to the Lord’s commandments.
If I were you, I wouldn’t discount any quotes or information attributed to Wilford Woodruff. You can read the Journal of Wilford Woodruff here.
Amazing Quotes by or about Wilford Woodruff 100 Foot High Mounds
“During our travels we visited many mounds thrown up by the ancient inhabitants, the Nephites and Lamanites.” History of the Life and Labors of Wilford Woodruff. As recorded in his daily journals prepared for publication by Matthias Cowley the Deseret News Salt Lake City, Utah 1909 page 41
“Before breaking camp the morning of June 3, the Prophet Joseph Smith, accompanied by several of the men, went to observe a large mound which was located approximately one mile below the Phillip’s Ferry crossing. It was of unusual size and lay within the proximity of a number of smaller mounds. Heber C. Kimball and Wilford Woodruff recorded in their journals that the mound was one hundred feet high and three hundred feet above the level of the river. The height of the mound enabled the men to look over the tops of the trees and view the surrounding area. At the crest of the mound, human bones were strewn around the base of what appeared to be a three-tiered altar. Heber C. Kimball wrote that the arrangement of the stones resembled the ancient order or altars..
Zelph Bones in Woodruff’s Wagon
“The men were curious about the area, the mounds, and particularly about the scattered bones. As they began to descend the mound, Joseph Smith suddenly stopped, pointed to the ground, and said, “Brethren, dig in there.” When the earth had been removed to the depth of one or two feet, the men found the skeleton of a large man. Journal accounts state that, “the bones were all there and in a good state of preservation.” Buried in the backbone, between the ribs of the man was a stone arrowhead which Milton Holmes took. Examining the skeleton more closely, it was noted that one of the thigh bones had been previously broken and knitted together. The thigh bones and the arrowhead were taken back to camp and placed in Wilford Woodruff’s wagon. The skeleton was unusually large . It was estimated to be over eight feet tall.”James L. Bradley, Zion’s Camp 1834: Prelude to the Civil War (Salt Lake City: Publishers Press, 1990), p. 207.

In the Joseph Smith Papers, Joseph Smith had a vision that was written down by Wilford Woodruff, Heber C. Kimball, George A. Smith and many others. “On the top of the mound were stones which presented the appearance of three altars having been erected one above the other, according to the ancient order; and the remains of bones were strewn over the surface of the ground. The brethren procured a shovel and a hoe, and removing the earth to the depth of about one foot, discovered the skeleton of a man, almost entire, and between his ribs the stone point of a Lamanitish arrow, which evidently produced his death. Elder Burr Riggs retained the arrow. The contemplation of the scenery around us produced peculiar sensations in our bosoms; and subsequently the visions of the past being opened to my understanding by the Spirit of the Almighty, I discovered that the person whose skeleton was before us was a white Lamanite, a large, thick-set man, and a man of God. His name was Zelph.
Zelph a Man of God by Ken Corbett
He was a warrior and chieftain under the great prophet Onandagus, who was known from the Hill Cumorah, or eastern sea to the Rocky mountains. The curse was taken from Zelph, or, at least, in part-one of his thigh bones was broken by a stone flung from a sling, while in battle, years before his death. He was killed in battle by the arrow found among his ribs, during the last great struggle of the Lamanites and Nephites.” Joseph Smith Papers History, 1838–1856, volume A-1 [23 December 1805–30 August 1834], Page 483
Lamanites
“Oliver Cowdery, even in that early day, had found the Navajos in the far Southwest, and he reported it to the brethren, feeling that it was a very important thing. Then Wilford Woodruff said this further, as he went down into the southwest, in New Mexico, and visited among the Indians there. He said: “In my short communication of the second inst., I promised to give a fuller account of my visit to the Isletas which I will now endeavor to do. The Isletas are one of the Pueblo groups down in New Mexico. I view my visit among the Nephites one of the most interesting missions of my life, although short. I say Nephites, because if there are any Nephites on this continent, we have found them among the Zunis, the Lagunas, and the Isletas, for they are a different race of people, altogether, from the Lamanites.I class the Navajo, Moquis (Hopis) and Apaches with the Lamanites, although they are in advance of many Indian tribes of America. I class the Zunis, Lagunas, and Isletas among the Nephites. And then he goes on to say, that as soon as they dismissed this particular meeting among the Isletas, and were going to leave, one of the Nephites arose. . . full of the spirit of the Lord and said, “Friends, why do you dismiss us and leave us this way? This is the first time we have heard of our forefathers and the gospel and the things we have looked for from the traditions of our fathers. If our wives and children are weary, let them go home. We want to hear more. We want you to talk all night. Do not leave us so.” The Work Among the Lamanites Elder Spencer W. Kimballl, Conference Report, October 1950, pp. 63-69
“This work will fill the Rocky Mountains with tens of thousands of Latter-day Saints, and there will be joined with them the Lamanites who dwell in those mountains who will receive the gospel of Christ from the elders of Israel, and they will be united with the Church and the kingdom of God, and bring forth much good” (Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, p. 30).
“I would say to the Lamanites, if I could speak to them understandingly, that you are also a branch of the house of Israel, and chiefly of the house of Joseph, and your forefathers have fallen through the same examples of unbelief and sins, as have the Jews, and you, as their posterity, have wandered in sin and darkness for many generations; and you, like the Jews, have been driven and trampled under the foot of the Gentiles, and put to death through your wars with each other, and with the white man, until you are almost destroyed. But there is still a redemption and salvation for a remnant of you in the latter days. It is time for you to cease shedding each other’s blood or making war upon your fellow-man. Cease to destroy one another, learn to cultivate the earth, and raise your food therefrom; call upon the Great Spirit to protect you and deliver you from bondage and darkness, and the Great Spirit will hear you and deliver you, and a remnant of you will again become a delightsome people as your forefathers were when they kept the commandments of God.” Wilford Woodruff History of His Life and Labors AS RECORDED IN HIS DAILY JOURNALS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION BY MATTHIAS F. COWLEY Salt Lake City, Utah 1909
About Cumorah
[Heber C. Kimball] “prophesied that when the final last struggle came to this nation it would be at the Hill Cumorah where both of the former Nations [Jaredite and Nephite] were destroyed”(abt. Heber C. Kimball) Wilford Woodruff’s Journal 6:305, December 17, 1866
“[Joseph] went [into] a Cave in the Hill Comoro with Oliver Cowdry & deposited those plates upon a table or shelf. In that room were deposited a large amount of gold plates containing sacred records… Joseph Smith said that cave contained tons of choice treasures & records.” Wilford Woodruff Journal, 11 December 1869
“Brigham Young said in relation to Joseph Smith’s returning the plates of the Book of Mormon that he did not return them to the box from where he had received [them]. But he went into a cave in the Hill Cumora [sic] with Oliver Cowdery and deposited those plates upon a table or shelf and in that room were deposited a large amount of gold plates, containing sacred records, and when they first visited that room the sword was drawn from the scabbord [sic] and lain upon the table and a messenger who was the keeper of the room informed them that that sword would never be returned to its scabbord until [sic] the Kingdom of God was established upon the earth and until it reigned triumphant over evy [sic] Joseph Smith said the cave contained tons of choice treasures and records.” 1869, Wilford Woodruff recorded this following a meeting of the Salt Lake City School of the Prophets:
“I rejoice in the goodness and mercy of the God of Israel In Preserving the precious Book of Mormon & bringing it to light in our day & generation. It teaches the honest & humble mind the great things of God that were performed in the land of promise now called America in Ancient days and also the great things of God that are nigh even at the doors.” Wilford Woodruff, Journal, 2 November 1845
About Joseph Smith
“It has been my faith and belief from the time that I was made acquainted with the Gospel that no greater prophet than Joseph Smith ever lived on the face of the earth save Jesus Christ. He was raised up to stand at the head of this great dispensation—the greatest of all dispensations God has ever given to man. He remarked on several occasions when conversing with his brethren: ‘brethren you do not know me, you do not know who I am.’ As I remarked at our priesthood meeting on Friday evening, I have heard him in my early days while conversing with the brethren, say, (at the same time smiting himself upon the breast) ‘I would to God that I could unbosom my feelings in the house of my friends.’ Joseph Smith was ordained before he came here, the same as Jeremiah was. Said the Lord unto him, ‘Before you were begotten I knew you’ etc.” Wilford Woodruff, “Organization of the First Presidency—Responsibility of the Saints, Etc.,” in Journal of Discourses, vol. 21 (Liverpool, 1881), 317. Discourse given on October 10, 1880.
“I look upon Joseph Smith as the greatest prophet that ever breathed the breath of life, excepting Jesus Christ. Father Adam, as I have said, stands at the head; but Joseph Smith was reserved to lay the foundation of this great kingdom and dispensation of salvation to the whole human family in these last days, to build up Zion, to establish God’s Kingdom, and to prepare it for the coming of the Son of Man.” Wilford Woodruff, The Deseret Weekly, vol. 38, (Deseret News Company, 1889), 389.
Proper Translation
And, as has been stated during this Conference, he brought forth the Book of Mormon-the stick of Joseph in the hands of Ephraim-in fulfillment of the testimony of Isaiah, translating that record through the Urim and Thummim, thereby revealing to us the history of the early inhabitants of this Continent. (1889, October, 6th Session, President Wilford Woodruff)
A Place Called Zarahemla
“I have a Patriarchal blessing hanging in a frame in my room, which was pronounced upon my head by the prophet and patriarch, Hyrum Smith, in the fall of 1844[1843?], which is worth more than gold to me – Gold is no name for it. The predictions are being literally fulfilled every day. I know if I prove faithful it will all come to pass. I knew then and also know now that Joseph was a true prophet of God, and that the mantle of Joseph fell on Brigham Young who was his legal successor.
I was present at the meeting when this took place and heard with my own ears and saw with my own eyes. We all thought Joseph had come back to us although we knew he was in his grave. I was standing by the temple talking to Brother Woodruff and he pointed out a spot to me on the opposit[e] side of the river about a mile and a half above Montrose, and said there would be a city and a temple built there and the place would be called Zarahemla.I was at Nauvoo when the temple was finished and dedicated. I went up into the tower and wrote my name there. As I understand, the wicked have burned that temple to the ground and it is all destroyed like the Jerusalem temple. But I expect to see that temple re-erected and the one built on the opposite side of the river to match.” Autobiography of Edward Phillips (1813-1896)
Wilford Woodruff- Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation by Lawrence R. Flake
When the venerable President Wilford Woodruff entered the Salt Lake Tabernacle 1 March 1897, he was greeted by the largest crowd ever assembled in that building.
The congregation was made up mostly of children gathered to honor him on his ninetieth birthday. The building was beautifully decorated and was draped with large banners bearing the words “Glory to God,” “Honor to His Prophet,” “We honor the man honored by God,” and “1807–1847–1897.” [1]
When the children arose and sang “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet,” President Woodruff was overcome with emotion. Later he wrote, “The scene completely overpowered me. The events of my childhood and early manhood came to my mind. I remembered vividly how I prayed to the Lord that
I might live to see a prophet or an apostle who would teach me the gospel of Christ. Here I stood in the great Tabernacle filled with ten thousand children, with Prophets, Apostles, and Saints. My head was a fountain of tears.” [2]
As a boy in Connecticut, Wilford had made friends with an old gentleman by the name of Robert Mason. This great and spiritual man possessed the gift of prophecy, and among the truths revealed to him was the fact that the kingdom of God would soon be reestablished on the earth. He gained this knowledge by seeing a vision and hearing a heavenly voice in the year 1800. When Father Mason related this experience to Wilford in about 1830, the old man declared that although he himself would not become part of the restored kingdom in this life, he would know of its establishment before his death and that Wilford Woodruff would become a leading figure in this great work. [3]
When two Mormon elders came to Richland, New York, where Wilford was living in 1833, the young man immediately accepted the gospel and was baptized. By letter he informed Robert Mason that the kingdom had been restored and that he was dedicating his life to building it. Father Mason rejoiced in this knowledge and died soon afterward. When the doctrine of baptism for the dead was revealed, Elder Woodruff performed this ordinance in behalf of his noble friend. [4]
Once he had found the truth, Wilford became one of the greatest missionaries of this dispensation. Ten of his first fifteen years in the Church were spent on missions in the United States and Great Britain. On one of his missions to the eastern states he carried a letter of introduction from the Prophet Joseph Smith, which stated in part, “He [Wilford] is, in the language of the Hebrews, ‘The friend of Israel’and worthy to be received and entertained as a man of God. Yea he has (as had the ancient apostles) the good word that leadeth unto Eternal Life.” [5]During his ministry Elder Woodruff baptized over two thousand people. A few years before his death he calculated that he had traveled nearly 175,000 miles, held over 7,500 meetings, preached 3,526 discourses, and organized more than fifty branches as he had labored in Europe, twenty-three states, and five territories of the Union. He offered dedicatory prayers for the Nauvoo, St. George, Manti, and Salt Lake temples. [6]
President Woodruff often referred to the fact that Satan wanted to keep him from making his contribution to the building of the kingdom: “The devil has sought to take away my life from the day I was born. . . . I seemed to be a marked victim of the adversary.”[7] On twenty-seven distinct occasions, most of them before he joined the Church, Wilford had been the victim of near-fatal accidents, ranging from falling into scalding water to nearly freezing to death. But the Lord miraculously preserved him for a great work. [8]
Ordained an apostle in 1839, Elder Woodruff faithfully supported Joseph Smith until the Prophet’s assassination five years later. Only a few weeks before the tragedy, Joseph sent Elder Woodruff on a mission to the East, warning him that if he did not go, he too would die. A week after the news of the martyrdom reached him in Boston, Elder Woodruff recorded in his journal, “Elder B. Young arived in Boston this morning. I walked with him to 57 Temple st. . . . Br Young took the bed and I the big Chair, and I here veiled my face and for the first time gave vent to my grief and mourning for the Prophet and Patriarch of the Church Joseph and Hiram Smith who were murdered by a gentile mob. After being bathed by a flood of tears I felt composed.” [9] The same kind of love and loyalty Elder Woodruff had for Joseph Smith was freely given to Brigham Young and John Taylor as presidents of the Church for forty years before he himself ascended to that holy calling at the age of eighty-two.
First Presidency, 1889–98. Left to right: George Q. Cannon, President Wilford Woodruff, and Joseph F. Smith
When Elder Woodruff became president of the Church, the Saints were in the midst of severe persecutions as a result of the practice of plural marriage. The government had confiscated the property of the Church, and leaders and hundreds of other prominent men had been forced into hiding to avoid imprisonment. Fear of arrest kept Elder Woodruff himself from attending the funeral of President Taylor, who died in exile. He watched the service from a building across the street from Temple Square, as he had also done for the funeral of his first wife, Phoebe Carter, a few months earlier. In 1890 President Woodruff withdrew the priesthood authority to perform plural marriages and announced in the Manifesto the cessation of the practice. Although some members of the Church were troubled by this action, the prophet made it very clear that he had only done as the Lord had directed. “I should have gone to prison myself . . . had not the God of heaven commanded me to do what I did,” he declared. “It was all clear to me. I went before the Lord, and I wrote what the Lord told me to write.” [10] He also taught, “I say to Israel, the Lord will never permit me nor any other man who stands as the President of this Church, to lead you astray.. . . If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place.” [11]
Wilford Woodruff’s entrance into the spirit world at the age of ninety-one must have been a very natural thing for him, for he had received visitors from that sphere on many occasions. Some of those visitors were Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, George A. Smith, and Jedediah M. Grant. George Washington and many other prominent men of the past sought the blessings of the temple at the hand of this spiritual servant of the Lord: “Two weeks before I left St. George, the spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them. . . . These were [the] signers of the Declaration of Independence, and they waited on me for two days and two nights.”[12] He further recorded: “I straightway went into the baptismal font and called upon brother McCallister to baptize me for the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and fifty other eminent men, making one hundred in all, including John Wesley, Columbus, and others; I then baptized him for every President of the United States, except three; and when their cause is just, somebody will do the work for them.” [13]
Editors note:The current President, Ulysses S. Grant, was the only President living. As you see the list of baptized Presidents, you see that they are done in order, with two noticeable absences: Martin Van Buren and James Buchanan. Martin Van Buren is infamous in LDS history. The Prophet Joseph petitioned President Van Buren for redress on account of their sufferings in Missouri. The President replied, “Gentlemen, your cause is just, but I can do nothing for you. … If I take up for you I shall lose the vote of Missouri.”
James Buchanan was the President during the so-called “Utah War”, sending Johnston’s Army to stop a rebellion that hadn’t begun. President Heber J. Grant had the work of these three men done
Wilford Woodruff’s public discourses and his seven-thousand-page journal record hundreds of spiritual manifestations, including raising one of his five wives from the dead. He left a posterity of thirty-three children. At President Woodruff’s funeral, his first counselor, George Q. Cannon, described him as “probably as angelical as . . . any person who has ever lived upon the earth. . . . He was a heavenly being. It was heaven to be in his company.” [14] Prophets and Apostles of the Last Dispensation Lawrence R. Flake

NOTE: There are some that dispute whether or not it was John Taylor that had this vision. The vision does, in fact, come from the journal of Wilford Woodruff. It is verified that it was not Wilford Woodruff that had the vision. Many believe it to be John Taylor’s vision.
I went to bed as usual at about 7:30PM. I had been reading a revelation in the French language. My mind was calm, more so than usual if possible, so I composed myself for sleep, but could not. I felt a strange feeling come over me and apparently became partially unconscious. Still I was not asleep, nor exactly awake, with dreary feeling. The first thing that I recognized was that I was in the tabernacle of Ogden, Utah. I was sitting in the back part of the building for fear they would call on me to preach, which however they did, for after singing the second time they called me to the stand.
I arose to speak and said that I didn’t know that I had anything especially to say, except to bear my testimony of the Latter-day work, when all at once it seemed as if I was lifted out of myself and I said, “Yes, I have something to say and that is this: Some of my brethren have been asking, “What is becoming of us? What is the wind blowing?” I will answer you right here what is coming very shortly.”
I was then in a dream, immediately in the city of Salt Lake, and wandering around in the streets and in all parts of the city, and on the doors of the houses I found badges of mourning and I could not find a house but was in mourning. I passed my own house and found the same sign there, and I asked the question, “Is that me that is dead?” Someone gave me the answer, “No, you will get through it all.”
It seemed strange to me that I saw no person in the streets in all my wandering around the country. I seemed to be in their houses with the sick, but saw no funeral procession, nor anything of the kind, but the city looking still and as though the people were praying. And it seemed that they had controlled the disease, but what the disease was I did not learn; it was not made known to me. I then looked over the country, north, east, south, and west, and the same mourning was in every land and in every place.
The next thing I knew I was just this side of Omaha. It seemed though I was above the earth, and looking down upon it. As I passed along upon my way east I saw the road full of people, mostly women, with just what they could carry in bundles on their backs, traveling to the mountains on foot. I wondered how they would get through with such a small pack on their backs. It was remarkable to us[?] that there were so few men among them. It didn’t seem to me as though the cars were running, the rails looked rusty and the roads abandoned; and I have no conception of how I traveled as I looked down upon the people.
I continued east by the way of Omaha and Council Bluffs, which were full of disease. There were women everywhere. The state of Illinois and Missouri were in a tumult, men killing one another, women joining the fighting, family against family in the most horrid manner.
I imagined next that I was in Washington and I found desolation there. The White House was empty and the Halls of Congress the same, and everything in ruins. The people seemed to have left the city and left it to take care of itself.
I was in Baltimore. In the square where the Monument of 1812 stands in front of the Charles Hotel. I saw dead piled up so as to fill the street square.I saw mothers cutting the throats of their own children for their blood. I saw them suck it from their throats to quench their own thirst and then lie down and die. The water of Chesapeake Bay was stagnant, and the stench arising from it on account of their throwing their bodies into it so terrible, that the very smell carried death with it. I saw no man except they were dead or dying in the streets and very few women. Those I saw were crazy and in an ugly condition. Everywhere I went I beheld the same sights all over the city; it was terrible beyond description to look upon.
I thought this must be the end; but no, I was seemingly in an instant in the city of Philadelphia. There everything was still. No living soul was there to greet me. It seemed the whole city was without any inhabitants. In the south of Chestnut Street and in fact everywhere I went, the putrefaction of the dead caused such a stench that it was impossible for any living thing to breathe, nor did I see any living thing in the city.
Next I found myself in Broadway, in the city of New York, and there it seemed the people had done the best they could to overcome the disease, but in wandering down Broadway I saw the bodies of beautiful women lying, some dead and others in a dying condition, on the sidewalks. I saw men come out of cellars and ravish the persons of some that were yet alive and then kill them and rob their bodies of all the valuables they had upon them. Then before they could get back to the cellar they would roll over a time or two and die in agony. In some of the back streets I saw them kill some of their own offspring and eat their raw flesh, and in a few minutes die themselves. Everywhere I went I saw the same scene of horror and destruction and death and rapine.
No carriages, buggies, or cars were running; but death and destruction were everywhere. Then I saw fire start and just at that moment a mighty East wind sprang up and carried the flames over the city and it burned until there was not a single building left standing there, even down to the waters edge. Wharves and shipping all seemed to burn and follow in common destruction where the “great city” was a short time ago. The stench from the bodies that were burning was so great that it was carried a long distance cross the Hudson Bay and carried death and destruction wherever it penetrated. I cannot paint in words the horror that seemed to compass me about; it was beyond description of man.
I supposed this was the end; but it was not. I was given to understand the same horror was being enacted all over the country, east, west, north, and south. Few were left alive, still there were some.
Immediately after I seemed to be standing on the left bank of the Missouri River, opposite the City of Independence, but there was no city. I saw the whole state of Missouri and Illinois and all of Iowa, a complete desert with no living being there. A short distance from the river however, I saw twelve men dressed in temple robes, standing in a square or nearly so (and I understood it represented the Twelve Gates of the New Jerusalem.) Their hands were uplifted in consecration of the ground and laying the corner stone of the temple. I saw myraids of angels hovering over them, and saw also an immense pillar of clouds over them and heard the angels singing the most heavenly music. The words were “Now is established the Kingdom of God and his Christ, which shall never more be thrown down.”
I saw people coming from the river and from the desert places a long way off to help build the temple and it seemed that hosts of angels all helped to get material to build with and I saw some of them who wore temple clothes come and build the temple and the city, and all the time I saw the great pillar of clouds hovering over the place.
Instantly, however, I found myself again in the tabernacle at Ogden. And yet, I could still see the building go on and I got quite animated in calling on the people in the tabernacle to listen to the beautiful music, for the angels were singing the same music I had heard before. “Now is established the Kingdom of God and his Christ, which shall never more be thrown down.”
At this I seemed to stagger back from the pulpit and Brother Francis D. Richards and some others caught my arm and prevented me from falling. Then I finished so abruptly. Still even then I had not fainted, but was simply exhausted.
Then I rolled over in bed and awoke just as the city clock was striking twelve. Source

This video may be the most important video on coming future events you have ever seen. The first part is a dream or a vision first had in 1878. Usually attributed to Wilford Woodruff. Sometimes it is attributed to John Taylor. Sometimes it is attributed to someone else. Whoever had this dream recounted a vivid and frightening view of war, disease and famine that might shortly overtake this world. The detail of this dream is quite remarkable. It is astonishing that a man could foresee the nuclear age decades before it actually happened. The second and third parts I am not interested much in but it is attached to this video. I just think the first video about that may have been seen by John Taylor is very interesting not just reading it but seeing the visuals as well. The second part is a prophecy given in 1917. It too provides a look at the coming nuclear age and a potential attack by nuclear submarines from foreign powers. The third part is Chapter 18 from the Book of Revelation in the Bible. By James Mahony –
“Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Illinois, recorded July 12, 1843, relating to the new and everlasting covenant, including the eternity of the marriage covenant and the principle of plural marriage. Although the revelation was recorded in 1843, evidence indicates that some of the principles involved in this revelation were known by the Prophet as early as 1831. See Official Declaration 1.”
“And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood—if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else. And if he have ten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified. D&C 132:61-62
Editor’s Note
As you read the heading to D&C 132 and verse 61-62, it is clearly understood that the principle of plural marriage was to be a blessing from God. Only God through His prophets could ordain such a high and holy practice. To we mortals on earth, spiritual things are very difficult to understand at times. When we study and pray and become in tune with the spirit, small witnesses can verify difficult doctrine. It seems the easy thing for the world to do is make fun of, and ridicule things they don’t understand through the spirit.
For myself and my dear Celestial Companion, we have discussed and prayed about this wonderful principle of plural marriage, and though it seems difficult to fully understand, we know it is a true principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Anyone who says otherwise I feel just has not studied and prayed enough about this holy principle.
Joseph Practiced Plural Marriage
“Those… claiming that there is no evidence that Joseph Smith practiced plural marriage are CLEARLY uninformed and historically illiterate. They have clearly never read the MANY eyewitness testimonies of the woman themselves. These woman gave detailed, consistent accounts that never wavered. Their testimonies always pointed back to Jesus Christ and called for greater holiness, repentance, chastity, honor and reverence for God. Doesn’t sound like a group of adulteress woman to me. Take, for example, Eliza R. Snow, Mary Elizabeth Rollins and Helen Mar Kimball. Anyone who reads their writings will see that these women were some of the greatest women to walk the face of the earth. Their fruit is beautiful! I have seen and experienced the fruit of many individuals who spit on these women. They spread lies, they blackmail innocent men and women, they spend their life tearing down others, instead of building up. Not very appealing to me, I must say. Please! If you are unfamiliar with this subject, go read the firsthand accounts of the women. There are dozens and dozens of men who recorded firsthand experiences with Joseph Smith and those are fascinating as well but read the WOMEN! Give them a chance to speak for themselves and you will come closer to Jesus Christ in the process. That is good fruit.” Hannah Stoddard
“Joseph Smith did not lie about his plural marriages. He was killed because of plural marriage. And maybe you should stop reading anti-Mormon history. If you read real history you would know that the 14 year old girl was Helen Mar Kimball who was the daughter of Heber C Kimball. Her sealing to the Prophet Joseph Smith was arranged by her father Heber C Kimball so their families could be connected eternally. The marriage was never consummated. She became the biggest advocate for the Principle of plural marriage and spent her life defending plural marriage and her sealing to Joseph. She also married Horace Whitney after the Martyrdom of Joseph where she convinced her new husband to marry three more wives. The reason most can’t comprehend this principle is that they are ruled by their passions and not by principles. It’s hard for those who have not overcome the natural man to comprehend that these early saints where men and women of high moral character and purity.” Kimberly W. Smith
“Polygamy Denial” as a movement has grown in the last several years. Not among professional or objective LDS historians, but it is a new pseudo-historical revisionist movement that seeks to blame polygamy on Brigham Young and claim that Joseph Smith never practiced it. Claiming that Joseph Smith didn’t practice plural marriage requires you to discount hundreds of eyewitness testimonies that state the opposite. We are talking about hundreds of testimonies, affidavits, journals, letters, and etc. that all corroborate each other. Dates, chronologies, events, details of conversations, etc. when analyzed all prove that the eyewitnesses are telling the truth. Not only is the world in general without knowledge in relation to this principle of Celestial plural marriage, but many of those among the Latter-day Saints are far from possessing a correct understanding of it.
The principle of Celestial plural marriagehas been made the subject of a great deal of ridicule—the doctrine is even condemned as a heinous sin by those who walk in darkness and who have not had the truth manifested to them by the light of revelation. The Spirit of the Almighty is the agent by which we should ever be led—not the vain imagination of man. It is essential that we study the history in context—prayerfully, and being guided by the Spirit to find the truth, “that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” Kimberly W. Did Joseph Smith Fight Against Plural Marriage?
Written by Kimberly W. Smith
There is a growing movement of members of the Church who are resurrecting the old, already debunked RLDS narrative that Joseph Smith neither practiced nor entered into plural marriage. Those who present this argument are staging quotes without context and purposely withholding sources, data, and clarifying information.
In Nauvoo, you have Celestial Plural marriage that was introduced privately to select members who had proven faithful. Whenever true Doctrine is revealed from Heaven, Satan sets up a counterfeit. Satan’s counterfeit for Celestial Plural Marriage was John C Bennett’s Spiritual Wifeism which was sex without marriage with multiple women who men said were their spiritual wives so it was okay. John C Bennett was also a doctor who performed abortions on women who he got pregnant.
So you can imagine that when Elders of the Church were seduced by John C Bennett’s spiritual wife, whoredoms that Joseph Smith spoke openly and publicly about what an abomination that was. So every public denial of “polygamy” Joseph always referenced by saying “Spiritual Wifesim”. I will give an example later in this document. You will notice that past quotes of Joseph denying spiritual wifeism are used without giving the context of the difference between spiritual wifery and Celestial Plural Marriage aka “Polygamy”.Kimberly’s Bio Tickets Here
The introduction of the doctrine of plural marriage by the Prophet Joseph Smith to his inner circle of trusted friends was the first in a string of crucial events that ultimately led to his death. Joseph Smith restored the previously-established doctrine, introducing it among his very closest associates—those who had already proven themselves to be faithful in 1842. Because of the traditions and prejudices instilled in the Saints themselves, the principle of plural marriage had to be introduced privately, through careful guidance of the Spirit. Therefore, the Prophet’s reestablishment of this doctrine was done primarily through confidential and personal interviews.
Samuel W. Richards remembered:
“I heard him [Joseph Smith] teach it [plural marriage] privately to quite a number at different times, – that is, in the aggregate, to quite a number, but not to many at a time. And I never did hear him preach it or teach it in what could be called a public manner.”
William Clayton wrote:
“After the revelation on celestial marriage was written, Joseph continued his instructions, privately, on the doctrine, to myself and others, and during the last year of his life we were scarcely ever together, alone, but he was talking on the subject, and explaining that doctrine and principles connected with it. He appeared to enjoy great liberty and freedom in his teachings, and also to find great relief in having a few to whom he could unbosom his feelings on that great and glorious subject.”
When the revelation on Celestial and plural marriage was given, the Prophet Joseph was quoted as saying:
“If I have to die for any revelation God has given through me I would as readily die for this one as any other. And I sometimes think that I shall have to die for it. It may be that I shall have to forfeit my life to it and if this has to be so, Amen”.
Contrary to the contentions of those who claim that Joseph never taught or entered into plural marriage, there are well over one hundred sworn statements and affidavits in the various collections of historical materials that currently exist, attesting to the Prophet’s both teaching and practicing the doctrine of Celestial plural marriage.
Dear Emma Smith
A great deal of the misunderstanding and confusion over the practice of plural marriage can be avoided when viewed in the light of the examples on the subject contained in ancient biblical records, and by using the correct terminology, such as Celestial marriage, or Eternal plural marriage.‘Polygamy,’ ‘spiritual wifery,’ and ‘secret wife system’ are all unwarranted, derogatory, and counterfeit labels concocted by Joseph’s avowed enemy, the infamous John C. Bennett. The Prophet Joseph Smith’s consistent public denials of ‘polygamy’ were a disavowal and a refutation of the accusations which were hurled at him of fornication, adultery, lust, and the counterfeit spiritual wife doctrine—they were not a denial of the teaching and practice of “Celestial plural marriage.”
Those who are unconverted to the revelations relating to temple ordinances—whether they be the sacred endowment ceremonies or Eternal marriage covenants—have their agency to reject those revelations and separate themselves from the Church. However, they lack the moral grounds to justify themselves in bearing false witness, misquoting, or practicing deceit by falsely misrepresenting the historical record and the actual teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Celestial marriage, or Eternal plural marriage, as found in the revelation, is fundamentally different from what is commonly referred to as ‘polygamy.’Polygamy, in the ordinary sense of the term, never was—and is not now—a tenet of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Members of the Church who presently lack sufficient sensitivity to the Spirit to be rescued by correct doctrine will remain adrift on a sea of confusion, falling prey to the misguidance of whoever happens to influence their understanding. It is essential that we study the history in context—prayerfully, and being guided by the Spirit to find the truth, “that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.
More than denying that Joseph Smith ever wrote the revelation on eternal Celestial and Plural Marriage as found in Doctrine and Covenants section 132, detractors even contend that Brigham Young—not Joseph Smith—was the author of section 132, and that it was written after the death of the Prophet. However, there exists irrefutable evidence that the revelation on Celestial marriage was put in writing on July 12, 1843, and that Joseph Smith knew as early as 1831 that plural marriage was to be restored.
Louisa Beaman
Careful investigation discloses that the following women did indeed become plural wives of the Prophet Joseph Smith between 1841 and 1843:
Sarah Ann Whitney
Louisa Beamanwas the first plural wife in Nauvoo. She was sealed to Joseph Smith on April 5, 1841—the day before the laying of the cornerstones of the Nauvoo Temple. Zina D. Huntington was sealed to Joseph Smith on October 27, 1841. Sarah Ann Whitney became a plural wife of Joseph Smith on June 27, 1842. Eliza R. Snowwas sealed to the Prophet as plural wife on June 29, 1842. Eliza D. Partridge and Emily D. Partridge became plural wives of the Prophet on May 11, 1843, . It is important to note that Emma Smith gave her consent to each of these plural marriages. Those acquainted with her, including some of the plural wives themselves, stated that Emma not only consented beforehand, but that she initially treated each of these plural wives with kindness. In 1843, however, Emma “became severely tried in her mind,” and rejected the revelation, and history has not been able to hide her subsequent perpetual hatred and bitter opposition to the principle.
Zina D. Huntington
According to present research, the names of all of Joseph Smith’s plural wives have been revealed, and their testimonies are recorded in heaven and on earth. They were righteous women who were sufficient witnesses to establish the truth upon the earth in such a manner that it can never be forgotten. Their combined testimony is destined to live, and to grow, and to spread upon the face of the earth—to be received, accepted, and adopted by all the virtuous, by all the pure in heart, by all who love the truth and seek to serve God and keep His commandments. Truth will prevail, and the day will come when they will be the most honored women on the face of the earth.
Not only is the world in general without knowledge in relation to the principle of Celestial plural marriage, but many of those among the Latter-day Saints are far from possessing a correct understanding of it. The principle of Celestial plural marriage has been made the subject of a great deal of ridicule—the doctrine is even condemned as a heinous sin by those who walk in darkness and who have not had the truth manifested to them by the light of revelation. The Spirit of the Almighty is the agent by which we should ever be led—not the vain imagination of man.
Emily Dow Partridge
Joseph Smith made it clear that to practice plural marriage except in the way ordained by divine lawwas a serious transgression of such magnitude that it jeopardized the offender’s eternal salvation. The Elders of the Church also strongly denounced the unlawful practice of these types of plural marriages. Having been “credibly informed” of an elder who was “preaching polygamy” without authority, the Prophet Joseph Smith and Hyrum published a notice in the Times and Seasons which read”
“This is to notify him and the Church in general, that he has been cut off from the church, for his iniquity.”
When another elder taught that “having a certain priesthood” entitled a man to have as many wives as he pleased, Hyrum Smith wrote:
“I say unto you that that man teaches false doctrine, for there is no such doctrine taught here; neither is there any such thing practiced here. And any man that is found teaching privately or publicly any such doctrine, is culpable, and will stand a chance to be brought before the High Council, and lose his license and membership also; therefore he had better be aware what he is about.”
The Law of God governing marriage in every dispensation has been consistent: A man may legally have but one living wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise through the constituted channels of His Holy Priesthood. Joseph Smith emphasized this law:
“I have constantly said no man shall have but one wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise.”
There shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none.” and acting as the Lord’s mouthpiece, the Prophet Joseph Smith explained to the Nephites: “For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.”
Because monogamy is the basic law of marriage within the Kingdom of God, the Lord has set clear bounds and restrictions on the taking of plural wives. The Priesthood is necessary to guide men in the practice of plural marriage, and if not practiced with “holiness and purity,” it is a sin. The Lord conferred upon the Prophet Joseph Smith “the keys and the power of the priesthood to restore all things and to make known all things.” Joseph Smith held the power to turn the key and inquire of the Lord, and by revelation and commandment through the medium of the Lord’s anointed, a man could receive more than one wife.
In ancient times, the keys and power over the plurality of wives were held by Abraham. Only through Abraham could Hagar obtain a blessing that her posterity would become a great nation. In relation to King David, the prophet Nathan held the keys. When David unlawfully took the wife of Uriah to be his own, Nathan came to reprove him for certain disobedience, and told him that through that act, he had lost his other wives; the Lord would give them to another. He also told him that, if he had been faithful, and if he had only asked for them, the Lord would have given him still more.
Joseph Smith taught the same law as found in the Book of Mormon:
There shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none.” and acting as the Lord’s mouthpiece, the Prophet Joseph Smith explained to the Nephites: “For if I will saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.”
When the principle of the plurality of wives was revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord stated:
“Verily I say unto you, that the wisdom ofman in his fallen state knoweth not the purposes and the privileges of my Holy Priesthood, but ye shall know when ye receive a fullness.”
The Lord made clear that in our current fallen state, it is impossible for any of us to understand His purposes without having received a fullness of knowledge. To our own detriment, we allow modern culture to influence our perception, and we so often mistakenly associate marriage with Hollywood’s corrupted version of romance and sexual pleasure, warping our view of its divine and intended purpose. In order to overcome our prejudices surrounding the doctrine of plural marriage, we must make an appeal to heaven and to scripture for understanding.
One of the primary purposes for requiring plural marriage, according to the Book of Mormon, is to raise up seed unto the Lord—but not just any seed: the “Chosen Seed.”
Among the greatest revelations ever received from the Lord by the Prophet Joseph Smith was the doctrine on the eternal order of birthright lineage—that priesthood was passed down to this generation through “a chosen seed.” The Lord revealed:
“The order of this priesthood was confirmed to be handed down from father to son, andrightly belongs to the literal descendants of the chosen seed, to whom the promises were made.”
The revelation in the 84th section of the Book of Doctrine of Covenants illustrates this principle:
“Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek, who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah; And from Noah till Enoch, through the lineage of their fathers.”
And the Lord covenanted with Enoch, and swore unto him, that through his seed the “Messiah” would come:
“And he sent forth an unalterable decree, that a remnant of his seed should always be found among all nations, while the earth should stand.”
Here the Lord made an unbreakable oath with Enoch that not only would Jesus Christ descend through his seed, but this “chosen seed” would always be found on the Earth. In 1832, while he was working on the inspired translation of the Bible, the Prophet Joseph Smith was given a revelation in which the Lord revealed:
“Therefore, thus saith the Lord unto you, with whomthe priesthood hath continued through the lineage of your fathers—
For ye are lawful heirs, according to the flesh, and have been hid from the world with Christ in God.”
Joseph Smith, inspired by God, came forth and declared that he and certain of the early brethren were the chosen seed—a royal lineage, and the legal heirs to the Priesthood.
We often fail to realize the deeper significance of this revelation. The Priesthood comes to us through the lineage of our fathers and mothers. The Lord was not talking about the Priesthood line of authority; He was talking about the inherited right to receive the Priesthood. We receive a right to the Priesthood from our royal blood ancestry.
Four weeks before the Martyrdom of the Prophet, Joseph Smith was being accused of ADULTERY by William Law who had been excommunicated for Apostasy and who also entered into a blood oath to take the life of Joseph, Hyrum, and other Church leaders.
Dr. Goforth was invited into the Laws’ clique, and Dr. Foster and the clique were dissatisfied with that document, and they rush away and leave the Church, and conspire to take away my life; and because I will not countenance such wickedness, [they proclaim that I have been a true prophet, but that I am now a fallen prophet]
…What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. ”
THIS STATEMENT -WHEN VIEWED IN ITS PROPER CONTEXT AND IN LIGHT OF THE CHARGES BROUGHT AGAINST JOSEPH-HAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEANING.
Hestates: “I had not been married scarcely five minutes, and made one proclamation of the Gospel, before it was reported that I had 7 wives..”
This is TRUE!!! Joseph Smith did not have 7 wives 5 minutes after marrying Emma. He didn’t take his plural wife until many years later. Joseph was smart and was outwitting the court and his enemies because his life and the lives of the Saints were at stake.
Joseph Smith denying ADULTERY and SPIRITUAL WIFEISM! NOT celestial plural marriage. Again, he is very intentional to word his statements carefully.
Remember Spiritual wifesim was John C Bennett’s deliberate counterfeit doctrine that he seduced women with and committed multiple whoredoms including performing abortions.
Joseph Smith denied he was associated with this counterfeit doctrine repeatedly! He did not engage in spiritual WIFEISM which was sex with multiple women without marriage. This was a gross sin and what Joseph Smith was calling adultery in his denials.
Joseph Smith NEVER denied being sealed to multiple women in the Celestial Marriage covenant under the authority and keys given to him by God.
In this paragraph, the Prophet Joseph Smith states:
“This New holy prophet (William Law) has gone to Carthage and swore that I had told him I was guilty of ADULTERY. This SPIRITUAL WIFEISM!”
In this paragraph, Joseph Smith states:
“A man asked me whether the commandment was given that a man may have seven wives; and now the new prophet has charged me with ADULTERY. I never had any fuss with these men until that Female Relief Society brought out the paper against adulterers and adulteresses.”
Joseph Smith was speaking about Elders who were Falsely teaching that the Priesthood entitled a man to have More than one wife. This was not the doctrine Joseph Smith taught. He taught the Eternal Celestial marriage covenant to select Elders who were authorized to receive more than one wife. The Priesthood alone never entitled a man to more than one wife.
To take an additional wife without AUTHORITY according to the Prophet Joseph Smith was adultery and he denied doing that himself or teaching it as doctrine.
Keeping the revelation and practice of plural marriage secret and out of public view was a matter of life or death for the Saints. Joseph Bates Noble performed the first plural marriage of Joseph Smith on April 5, 1841, to Louisa Beaman. The Prophet dictated the words of the ceremony to Noble, and later cautioned him,
“In revealing this to you, I have placed my life in your hands, therefore do not in an evil hour betray me to my enemies” ( Joseph B Noble, affidavit, June 26 1869).
Reflecting back on the events in Nauvoo Apostle Orson Hyde related:
“What would it have done for us, if they had known that many of us had more than one wife when we lived in Illinois? They would have broken us up, doubtless, worse than they did.”
Anyone who will read carefully the denials, as they are termed… will see clearly that they denounce adultery, fornication, brutal lust, and the teachings of plurality of wives by those who were NOT commanded to do so. In light of the circumstances under which they were spoken, Joseph’s words were carefully chosen in order to protect the Saints from mounting tensions and incitement to violence.
There are times where withholding or misrepresenting the truth may be appropriate to protect others from persecution, violence, or death.
In order for faithful Mormon leaders to deny plural marriage publicly with a clear conscience, they developed a code for speaking using double meanings.
Those involved with Nauvoo polygamy authorized by Joseph Smith believed they were doing so in obedience to Celestial Law as commanded by God, and so to protect individuals involved with obeying the commandments was seen as righteous, even if practicing polygamy was in violation of the law in the state of Illinois, for as Peter said “We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
Monogamy versus Polygamy
Monogamy is always the Lord’s standard until he commands otherwise: “For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.” According to the History of the Church’s expansion of Joseph Smith’s October 5, 1843 journal entry, the Prophet also taught polygamy in this context: “I have constantly said that no man should have but one wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise.”
Apostle George A. Smith recalled that when Joseph Smith was faced with opposition from quotes in the Book of Mormon against polygamy, the Prophet responded “God has commanded us.”
The Lord initially commanded monogamy. Doctrine and covenants section 42 states “Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.”
It took revelation from the Lord to do otherwise, as W. W. Phelps recalled being taught by the Prophet when he asked about plural marriage: “About three years after this [July 1831 revelation] was given, I asked brother Joseph, privately, how ‘we,’ that were mentioned in the revelation could take wives of the ‘natives’ as we were all married men? He replied instantly ‘In the same manner that Abraham took Hagar and Keturah; and Jacob took Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah; by revelation — the saints of the Lord are always directed by revelation’.”
After Joseph Smith taught William Law polygamy, Law retorted “there is a revelation [in the Doctrine and Covenants] just the contrary of this,” to which Joseph replied, “that was given when the church was in its infancy, then it was all right to feed the people on milk, but now it is necessary to give them strong meat.”
Plural marriage was not taught and practiced from the beginning of the Church, but “held in reserve until after the apostles and other leaders had dedicated their lives in the service of God. They preached the Gospel and built up the Church for years before the Lord through Joseph permitted them to enter into polygamy.”
The Documentary History of the Church reports that Joseph Smith said “it is not always wise to relate all the truth. Even Jesus, the Son of God, had to refrain from doing so, and had to restrain His feelings many times for the safety of Himself and His followers, and had to conceal the righteous purposes of His heart in relation to many things pertaining to His Father’s kingdom.”
HOW PSEUDO-HISTORICAL RLDS SOURCES ARE INFLUENCING LATTER-DAY SAINTS TODAY
Richard and Pamela Price, leaders in the RLDS movement, claim they were by a letter written by RLDS Church President Israel A. Smith in 1956 to write a 3-volume book entitled Joseph Fought Polygamy.
It seems clear that, from the outset, authors Richard and Pamela Price did not set out to write a scholarly work based on sound historical evidence. Joseph Fought Polygamy was simply a reprinting of old arguments made by the RLDS Church dating back to the 1860s, using the same old falsehoods placed into circulation in Nauvoo by dissenters who themselves coveted Brigham Young’s leadership position. The entire foundation of the RLDS Church’s identity is fundamentally anchored to the belief that Joseph Smith never practiced or taught the revelation on Celestial plural marriage. The principal criticism of their work by trained historians—without an agenda—is the Prices’ very selective use of historical data, presenting a one-sided, highly biased, and distorted view of “polygamy” and Brigham Young.
In 1983, Richard Howard, the first professionally trained historian of the RLDS Church, dropped a bombshell at a historical conference when he delivered irrefutable evidence connecting the origins of the doctrine of plural marriage in Nauvoo to the Prophet Joseph Smith. A once-cherished belief by members of the RLDS Church had been proven false under the weight of historical evidence.
The feud over polygamy in the RLDS Church became a decades-long struggle among their members, who refused to accept defeat. Richard and Pamela Price became key players in the movement to keep a dying tradition on life support.
Sadly, their persistence in re-publishing historically inaccurate falsehoods has infused lies into the hearts and minds of a growing number of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who don’t even realize they are the unfortunate victims of a 160-year-old deception.
More recently, a man named Richard Karren wrote a book in 2018 titled “The Exoneration of Emma, Joseph, and Hyrum,” which he dedicated to his “RLDS” aunt whom he claims “inspired my work.” Karren reveals in the preface of his work that one of his purposes is to “offer proof that Emma, Joseph, and Hyrum did not participate or practice polygamy in any way; but instead fought it vigorously.” He also revealed that he was aided by the research of Richard and Pamela Price.
On August 17, 2021, Richard Karren declared in a social media comment: “Our Mormon-ic Forefathers and Mothers were and are DISGUSTING… May these lying whores be endlessly raped in their perspective hells, by their demonic priesthood leaders…until all truth is revealed or until the end of time…whichever occurs last. Let them take their pain and complaints to Brigham and Heber.”
Richard Karren and those like him are moved on by the spirit of the adversary, the enemy of our souls. Those who choose to be the tools of wicked and designing men, and of him who is the Father of Lies, will receive their reward according to their works.
Rob Farthingham is a disgruntled member of the Church who has a a popular video on You-tube titled, First LDS Polygamist: Joseph or Brigham? In this video, Farthingham alleges that polygamy began with Brigham Young not Joseph Smith.
However, Rob only presents a fragmented, one-sided, and distorted view of the historical record through the selective use of documents. In fact, Rob Farthingham admitted in an interview with Mark Curtis —-a leader in the Doctrine of Christ movement on Hemlock Knots dot com— the following:
“I think I tried to be realistic about the limitations of my understanding even in the Joseph and Brigham video. It is fair to say that the evidence that is available that supports the traditional narrative about Joseph Smith being a polygamist vastly outweighs anything I was able to accumulate and to present. From my perspective I wasn’t trying to be exhaustive. There is persuasive evidence on both sides to make the case for both sides.”
I am thankful for Rob’s honesty. His You-Tube video ignores the hundreds of documents that prove that plural marriage originated in Nauvoo and was both taught by and practiced by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Sadly, these are the main sources for the modern “Polygamy denial” movement that has grown in the last several years. Sadly, Rob Farthingham has been able to persuade hundreds of latter-day Saints to his side by manipulating the facts and withholding credible evidence.
Plural Marriage and the Relief Society
(Additional proof that all public denials were denials of John C Bennett’s spiritual wife system not plural marriage).
Joseph Smith and the small group of his trusted associates who had privately entered into plural marriages considered their relationships to be holy matrimony, sealed or confirmed by divine authority and approval. Joseph Smith’s 1843 revelation regarding plural marriage specified that he was the sole possessor of the authority for the performance of such marriages. However, as knowledge of the practice of plural marriage spread, it prompted counterfeit practices and abuse, such as John C. Bennett’s notion of “spiritual wifery. Bennett and others “got an inkling” of Joseph Smith’s private teachings on plural marriage and “made use of some of those principles to corrupt to destroy not only himself but others.”
Publicly addressing John C Bennett’s assertions regarding “secret wives” also posed a significant challenge for Relief Society leaders in Nauvoo: how to openly refute Bennett’s false claims without acknowledging or explaining the practice of plural marriage in a public setting. The Times and Seasons published a statement signed by nineteen prominent members of the Nauvoo Relief Society in which the women distanced themselves from Bennett’s activities and accusations.
“We the undersigned members of the ladies’ relief society, and married females do certify and declare that we know of no system of marriage being practiced in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints save the one contained in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and we give this certificate to the public to show that J. C. Bennett’s “secret wife system” is a disclosure of his own make.
Emma Smith, President, Elizabeth Ann Whitney, Counsellor, Sarah M. Cleveland, Counsellor, Eliza R. Snow, Secretary,
Eliza R. Snow later wrote, “At the time the sisters of the Relief Society signed our article, I was married to the prophet— we made no allusion to any other system of marriage than Bennett’s— his was prostitution, and it was truly his, and he succeeded in pandering his course on the credulity of the unsuspecting by making them believe that he was thus authorized by the Prophet. In those articles there is no reference to divine plural marriage. We aimed to put down its opposite.”
