Description
Zelph Mound, a large bluff-top burial mound in Illinois was visited in 1834 by the Prophet Joseph Smith and his group of men known as Zion’s Camp. This group of Mormon men and women numbered approximately 150 when they crossed the Illinois river on their way to Missouri. During the crossing of the river at Phillip’s Ferry, several men went to visit a burial mound a mile below the crossing and made a discovery related to the Book of Mormon.
“The location of this incident,” according to Stanley B. Kimball, “appears to have been what is now called the Naples-Russell Mound #8, about one mile south of present-day Valley City, Illinois, in a typical prehistoric Middle Woodland mortuary complex of the Hopewell culture.” (Stanley B. Kimball 1981, 31) Mormon Parallels: A Bibliographic Source
