Only Two Lands of Promise-Jerusalem & New Jerusalem

Two Lands of Promise

Annotated Book of Mormon Pages 506-507 Purchase Now!

The Old World Promised Land is in the Land of Jerusalem

The Bible teaches that the promised land for the Jews is the land of Jerusalem. When Jesus appeared to the Nephites on the American continent, He explained that: “The land of their fathers” is the “land of Jerusalem which is the Promised land” (3 Nephi 20:29). Jesus then told the Nephites that the land upon which He was speaking would be the covenanted gathering place for “the remnant of Jacob” and “as many in the House of Israel as shall come, that they may build a city, which shall be called the New Jerusalem” (3 Nephi 21:23).

The New World Promised Land is at the Borders of the Lamanites in Missouri

Lehi, who took his family from Jerusalem across the ocean to America, prophesied about the promised land: “Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me: That there shall
none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord. Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom He shall bring; and if it so be that they shall serve Him according to the commandments which He hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity, if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound, cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous, it shall be blessed forever” (2 Nephi 1:6-7; emphasis added).

Nephi recounts the vision he was shown that foretold the events that would take place on the land of
promise: “And it came to pass that I beheld the Spirit of God, that it wrought upon other Gentiles, and they went forth out of captivity, upon the many waters. And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise, and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren, and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten” (1 Nephi 13:13-14). This description of the “other Gentiles” matches both the Pilgrims’ and the Puritans’ history of crossing the Atlantic ocean or “the many waters” where the “seed of [Nephi’s] brethren” [the Lamanites, of the House of Joseph] were “scattered” and “smitten” by the early American settlers. Nephi further comments on the meaning of the scattering: “And it meaneth that the time cometh that after all the House of Israel have been scattered and confounded, that the Lord God will raise up a ‘mighty’ nation among the Gentiles, yea, even upon the face of this land, and by them shall our seed be scattered” (1 Nephi 22:7-8; emphasis added).

Nephi explained that “a mighty nation” would be “raised up” by the Lord. Notice this is not a group of nations, but a single nation that would become mighty. In Doctrine and Covenants 101:80, the Lord explains “I established the Constitution of this land by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood.” In 1829, when Joseph translated the Book of Mormon, the term “mighty nation” would not have described the United States. European nations had colonized the rest of the world and had formidable armies and navies, along with powerful religious leaders. The Constitution was only forty years old and was deeply threatened by the division between the North and the South. It wouldn’t be until the end of the Civil War in 1865 that it became clear the United States would endure as a nation. Since then, the United States of America has fulfilled Nephi’s prophecy and has become the “mighty nation.” This nation has fulfilled the other elements of his prophecy. As previously stated, when living in Nauvoo, IL, Joseph Smith wrote that the remnant of the descendants of Lehi were “the Indians who now inhabit this country.”

The Lord also identified these Indians as Lamanites in Doctrine and Covenants 28, 30 and 32. It was these Lamanites who were “scattered” by the mighty nation of the United States. An example was the sad “Trail of Tears,” a series of forced removals of several American Indian Nations from their ancestral homelands in the Southeastern United States to an area west of the Mississippi River that had been designated as the new Native Territory by the federal government. Those forced relocations were carried out following the passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830, the very year the Book of Mormon was published that contained this prophecy.

In a revelation given through Joseph Smith Jr., the Prophet, to Oliver Cowdery (Second Elder of the Church), at Fayette, New York, September 1830, who was ordained Assistant President of the Church in
1834) the Lord directs him to the Lamanites saying: “And now, behold, I say unto you that you shall go
unto the Lamanites and preach My gospel unto them; and inasmuch as they receive thy teachings thou
shalt cause My church to be established among them; and thou shalt have revelations, but write them not by way of commandment. And now, behold, I say unto you that it is not revealed, and no man knoweth where the city Zion shall be built, but it shall be given hereafter. Behold, I say unto you that it shall be on the borders by the Lamanites” (Doctrine and Covenants Section 28:8-9; emphasis added). In a subsequent revelation given through Joseph Smith Jr., the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, September 22 and 23, 1832, the Lord states where the location will be: “…Yea, the word of the Lord concerning His church, established in the last days for the restoration of His people, as He has spoken by the mouth of His prophets, and for the gathering of His saints to stand upon Mount Zion, which shall be the city of New Jerusalem. Which city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased” (Doctrine and Covenants Section 84:2-3; emphasis added).

North America is a choice land, a land that ushered in the restoration of the Gospel with the translation
of the Book of Mormon by the gift and power of God, and a land that has a future destiny in being the
location of the city of the New Jerusalem in which those of the House of Israel shall dwell. Annotated Book of Mormon by David Hocking and Rod Meldrum pages xii-xiii

1. Feb 1828 Martin Harris visits Joseph in Harmony and receives the “Caractors.” Harris returns towards home before heading east.

Anthon Manuscript

2.-3 Harris visits The Canandaigua Academy, a private school for boys established in 1791, potentially they had the resources to help Harris find scholars in the east and even books that may have helped him superficially analyze the characters. Then he goes to Palmyra before heading east.

4. A copyright for the Book of Mormon was submitted to the State Office in Utica on June 10, 1829. Harris may have visited for this reason.

Luther Bradish

5. Luther Bradish, Lt Governor of New York, was a diplomat, world traveler, knew many languages, and was a family friend of Harris.

6. Samuel Mitchill was the vice president of Rutgers Medical College

7. After Harris went to Albany and spoke with Bradish according to one source, Harris may have continued on to Philadelphia after meeting with Anthon. The American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson encouraged research about Native Americans and helped support scholarship about their origins, culture, and history.

Samuel L. Mitchill American physician

Everyone knows about the “Caractors” copied from the plates for the inspection of the East Coast scholars Samuel Mitchill and Charles Anthon. MacKay and Dirkmaat have found evidence of many such copies circulating among the Church members in the early years. They were used to arouse interest and to substantiate the reality of the translation. The characters were copied onto paper used to wrap the text of the Book of Mormon as it went off to the press. They remind us of the fact that Martin Harris and

Charles Anthon

Joseph Smith did not know the characters were Egyptian until after Harris’ New York expedition in February 1828. The language of the plates could not have come to light until after translation began in March 1828. Before that time, Harris and Smith were more likely to think the characters were ancient American, some variety of an Indian language. They went to Mitchill because he was the country’s expert on Indian dialects and likely to Charles Anthon, best known as a classicist, because he also collected Indian oratory. The authors further suggest that Joseph was not sure at first if he was the one to translate the plates at all. He told Joseph Knight he wanted the plates translated, but at first he may have assumed a learned person would do it…” Foreword By Richard Lyman about the book, “From Darkness Unto Light” Michael Hubbard McKay, Gerrit J. WHY JOSEPH SMITH AND MARTIN HARRIS DESIRED TO SPEAK WITH SAMUEL MITCHILL

AN INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE IROQUOIS INDIANS

In 1844 A.D. a newspaper called the “Prophet” published to the world this broadside page declaring that the Stick of Joseph had been translated and published into English for the first time.

1. “The earliest records, found in 1829 New York newspaper accounts, verify that Mitchill was not only the person Harris was sent to, but that he was the central figure in the story… Much of Mitchill’s work focused upon the area around New York State, in which he argued that the region was much older than Europe… Mitchill possessed special interests and experiences that may have prompted Bradish and Anthon to send Martin Harris to see him: his intimate knowledge of the American Indian and New York State’s geology and mineralogy; a marked familiarity with western New York, including Ontario County, as well as with American antiquities; a knowledge of ancient languages and hieroglyphics; and finally, his genuine love of people.”

Cherokee Warrior

2. “His interest in America’s native peoples grew directly out of his careful observations and prodigious knowledge as perhaps the leading mineralogist and geologist of his time. A frequent visitor to Niagara, Ontario, Genesee, Seneca, Cayuga, and Onondaga counties, he had found and catalogued a great many salt-based sea fossils from this region.”
3. “Trusted and highly respected, Mitchill had been adopted into the Mohawk fraternity, had learned their language, and had translated into English many of their Indian war songs. The Oneidas and the Onondagas had even bestowed personal names on him. He sustained an abiding interest in Indian languages and later concluded that all tribal languages were derived from the same linguistic root…”
4. “ … He shared his findings freely with contemporary colleagues and students of the American Indian at a time when much discussion focused on their origins and culture. His research interests had led him to discover several ancient Indian burial mounds and fortifications stretching across upstate New York from Sacketts Harbor to Boughton Hill in Ontario County and from Canandaigua to Onondaga.”

DeWitt Clinton

5. His lifelong friend and fervent admirer De Witt Clinton, likewise came to consider such constructions to be of ancient origin, the places of great battles between ancient Indian tribes long before the arrival of the European races.”
6. “There remain two other significant reasons why Mitchill showed such interest in his Palmyra visitor. The first was the simple matter of timing. Harris could not have caught the good professor at a more propitious moment. For the previous eight years Mitchill had been busily propounding and publishing one aspect or another of his ‘two-races’ theory of ancient America. (See Ethan Smith, View of the Hebrews; or, The Tribes of Israel in America, 1825). His interest in the history of the ancient American Indians was at a peak when Harris arrived. The second was Mitchill’s boundless curiosity, kindliness, and open and engaging personality.” From Darkness Unto Light, Michael Hubbard McKay, Gerrit J. Dirkmaat

Joseph Smith’s Patriarchal Blessing

Blessing given January 23, 1833

As recorded by Joseph Smith:

About 3 o’clock P.M. I dismissed the school and the presidency retired to the loft attic storey of the printing office, where we attended to the ordinance of washing our bodies in pure water. We also perfumed our bodies and our heads, in the name of the Lord. At early candlelight I met with the presidency, at the west school room in the Chapel Temple to attend to the ordinance of anointing our heads with holy oil: Also the councils of Kirtland and Zion met in the two adjoining rooms, who waited in prayer while we attended to the ordinance.

I took the oil in my left hand, Father Smith being seated before me, and the remainder of the presidency encircled him round about. We then stretched our right hands towards heaven and blessed the oil and consecrated it in the name of Jesus Christ. We then laid our hands on our aged Father Smith, and invoked the blessings of heaven. I then anointed his head with the consecrated oil, and sealed many blessings upon him; The presidency then in turn laid his hands upon his head, beginning at the eldest until they had all laid their hands upon him, and pronounced such blessings upon his head, as the Lord put into their hearts, all blessing him to be our Patriarch to anoint our heads and attend to all duties that pertain to that office.

The presidency then took the seat in their turn, according to their age, beginning at the eldest, and received their anointing and blessing under the hand, of father Smith; and in my turn my father anointed my head, and sealed upon me the blessings of Moses, to lead Israel in the latter Days, even as Moses led him in days of old; also the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. All of the Presidency laid th[e]ir hands upon me, and pronounced upon my head many prophecies, and blessings, many of which I shall not notice at this time.

But as Paul said, so say I, let us come to visions and revelations. The heavens were opened upon us, and I beheld the celestial kingdom of God, and the glory thereof, whether in the body or out I cannot tell. I saw the transcendent beauty of the gate, through which the heirs of that kingdom will enter, which was like unto circling flames of fire. Also the blazing throne of God, wherein was seated the Father and the Son. I saw the beautiful streets of that kingdom, which had the appearance of being paved with Gold. I saw Father Adam, and Abraham, and Michael, and my Father and Mother, my brother Alvin that has long since slept and marveled how it was, that he had obtained an inheritance in that kingdom, seeing that he had departed this life before the Lord had set his hand to gather Israel the second time, and had not been baptized for the remission of sins. Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me saying. All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry shall be heirs of the celestial Kingdom of God: also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts shall be heirs of that kingdom, for I the Lord will jude an all men according to their works, according to the desires of their hearts.

And I also beheld that all children who die before they arrive to the years of accountability, are saved in the celestial Kingdom of heaven. I saw the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb, who are now upon the earth, who hold the keys of this last ministry in foreign lands, standing together in a circle, much fatigued, with their clothes tattered and feet swoolen, with their eyes cast downward, and Jesus standing in their midst, and they did not behold him. The Savior looked upon them and wept. I also beheld Elder McLellin in the South, standing upon a hill, surrounded with a vast multitude, preaching to them, and a lame man standing before him, supported by his crutches; he threw them down at his word and leaped as an hart, by the mighty power of God.

Also Elder Brigham Young standing in a strange land, in the far south west, in a desert place, upon a rock, in the midst of about a dozen men of color who appeared hostile He was preaching to them in their own tongue, and the angel of God standing above his head, with a drawn sword in his hand protecting him, but he did not see it: and I finally saw the Twelve in the celestial kingdom of God. I also beheld the redemption of Zion, and many things which the tongue of man cannot describe in full. Many of my brethren who received this ordinance with me saw glorious visions also, angels ministered unto them, as well as myself, and the power of the highest rested upon us; the house was filled with the glory of God, and we shouted hosanna to God and the Lamb. My scribe also received his anointing with us, and saw in a vision the armies of heaven protecting the saints in their return to Zion— and many things which I saw.

December 1834 Blessing from Father Joseph

Joseph, my son, I lay my hands upon thy head in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to confirm upon thee a father’s blessing. The Lord thy God has called thee by name out of the heavens: thou hast heard his voice from on high from time to time, even in thy youth. The hand of the angel of his presence has been extended toward thee by which thou hast been lifted up and sustained; yea, the Lord has delivered thee from the hands of thine enemies and thou hast been made to rejoice in his salvation: thou hast sought to know his ways, and from thy childhood thou hast meditated much upon the great things of his law. Thou hast suffered much in thy youth, and the poverty and afflictions of thy father’s family have been a grief to thy soul. Thou hast desired to see them delivered from bondage, for thou hast lov’d them with a perfect love. Thou hast stood by thy father, and like Shem, would have covered his nakedness, rather than see him exposed to shame: when the daughters of the Gentiles laughed, thy heart has been moved with a just anger to avenge thy kindred. Thou hast been an obedient son: the commands of thy father and the reproofs of thy mother, thou hast respected and obeyed— for all these things the Lord my God will bless thee. Thou hast been called, even in thy youth to the great work of the Lord: to do a work in this generation which no other man would do as thyself, in all things according to the will of the Lord. A marvelous work and a wonder has the Lord wrought by thy hand, even that which shall prepare the way for the remnants of his people to come in among the Gentiles, with their fulness, as the tribes of Israel are restored. I bless thee with the blessings of thy fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and even the blessings of thy father Joseph, the son of Jacob. Behold, he looked after his posterity in the last days, when they should be scattered and driven by the Gentiles, and wept before the Lord: he sought diligently to know from whence the son should come who should bring forth the word of the Lord, by which they might be enlightened, and brought back to the true fold, and his eyes beheld thee, my son: his heart rejoiced and his soul was satisfied, and he said,
“As my blessings are to extend to the utmost bounds of the everlastings hills; as my father’s blessing prevailed above the blessings of his progen[i]tors, and as my branches are to run over the wall, and my seed are to inherit the choice land whereon the Zion of God shall stand in the last days, from among my seed, scattered with the Gentiles, shall a choice Seer arise whose bowels shall be as a fountain of truth, whose loins shall be girded with the girdle of righteousness, whose hands shall be lifted with acceptance before the God of Jacob to turn away his anger from his annointed, whose heart shall meditate great wisdom, whose intelligence shall circumscribe and comprehend the deep things of God, and whose mouth shall utter the law of the just: His feet shall stand upon the neck of his enemies, and he shall walk upon the ashes of those who seek his destruction: with wine and oil it shall he be sustained, and he shall feed upon the heritage of Jacob his father: the just shall desire his society, and the upright in heart shall be his companions: No weapon formed against him shall prosper, and though the wicked mar him for a little season, he shall be like one rising up in the heat of wine—he shall roar in his strength, and the Lord shall put to flight his persecutors: he shall be blessed like the fruitful olive, and his memory shall be as sweet as the choice cluster of the first ripe grapes. Like a shief [sheaf] fully ripe, gathered into the garner, so shall he stand before the Lord, having produced a hundred fold.”

Thus spake my father Joseph. Therefore, my son, I know for a surety that these things will be fulfilled, and I confirm upon thee all these blessings. Thou shalt live to do the work which the Lord shall command thee: thou shalt hold the keys of this ministry, even the presidency of this church, both in time and in eternity. Thy heart shall be enlarged, and thou shalt be able to fill up the measure of thy days according to the will of the Lord. Thou shalt speak the word of the Lord and the earth shall tremble; the mountains shall move and the rivers shall turn out of their course. Thou shalt escape the edge of the sword, and put to flight the armies of the wicked. At thy word the lame shall walk, the deaf shall hear and the blind shall see. Thou shalt be gathered to Zion and in the goodly land thou shalt enjoy thine inheritance; thy children and thy children’s children to the latest generation; for thy name and the names of thy posterity shall be recorded in the book of the Lord, even in the book of blessings genealogies, for their joy and benefit forever. And now, my son, what more shall I say? Thou art as a fruitful olive and a choice vine: thou shalt be laden with precious fruit. Thousands and tens of thousands shall come to a knowledge of the truth through thy ministry, and thou shalt rejoice with them in the Celestial Kingdom: Thou shalt stand upon the earth when it shall reel to and fro as a drunken man, and be removed out of its place: thou shalt stand when the mighty judgments go forth to the destruction of the wicked: thou shalt stand on mount Zion when the tribes of Jacob come shouting from the north, and with thy brethren, the sons of Ephraim, crown them in the name of Jesus Christ: Thou shalt see thy Redeemer Come in the clouds of heaven, and with the just receive the hallowed throng with shouts of hallalujahs, praise the Lord. Amen

September 1835
Preface written by Oliver Cowdery: “The reader will remember the remarks made at the commencement of the foregoing blessings, pronounced by the first patriarch, and first elder in this church, Joseph Smith, jr. I said that he had authority to bless; this is so, and it may be understood that those men whose names are mentioned in the blessings by his mouth, had long been employed in the work of the Lord, and were personally known to him. I mean those besides his own family, who are myself, Frederick G. Williams, Sidney Rigdon, David Whitmer, John Whitmer, John Corrill and William W. Phelps. Now, after writing these blessings at the mouth of the Seer, I greatly desired to know the mind of the Spirit concerning this my brother, with whom I had labored so many years; And accordingly I besought the Lord with prayer and fasting, who opened the heavens upon me, And thus, while in the heavenly vision, I wrote the following blessing, which is a part of that which was shown and declared should come upon my brother. Therefore, let no one doubt of their correctness and truth, for they will verily be fulfilled. (signed) Oliver Cowdery.” (Patriarchal Blessings Book Volume 2:28, Church Historians Office)

Blessed of the Lord is my brother, for the integrity of his heart and the steadfastness of his soul. Upheld by the arm of the Almighty he shall never fall, but shall be strengthened by his right hand till he overcomes. Like Jacob of old he shall wrestle with the angel, and as a prince shall he have power with God, and shall prevail. Ever faithful to friends and true to his word, the goodness of the Most High shall sustain him, and thousands shall stand up to defend him from the hand of his enemies, and put forth the hand and ward off the blow were it needful: but ere his foes are aware he shall be hid under the pavilion of the Lord Jehovah; for, with the voice of his thunder shall he strike terror to their hearts, and as with the wings of an eagle shall my brother be carried beyond all harm, by the power of the Anointed. From amid the burning bush, like Moses of old, shall he hear the voice, saying, I am the God of thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, I have seen, I have seen, the affliction of my people and am come down to deliver them: go, thou, and say to the strength of my house, To your tents, O Israel: build up the wastes and raise up the foundation of desolation that this generation has made. Thus shall he be honored of the Lord, and thus shall it be recorded of him, that the generations to come may bless his name, in Israel, saying, The Lord make thee as Joseph the Seer, who was of the house of Ephraim, the brother of Manasseh: the Lord do thee good and bring peace and blessings upon [upon] thy house as he brought them upon the house of Joseph the Seer, who was raised up of a choice vine from the stem of Jacob through the root of Joseph, even that Joseph who was separated from his brethren— For, like Joseph of old shall he be: he shall save the just from desolation, by the wise counsel of the Almighty; for by his direction shall they gather into storehouses and barns, till they overflow with the richness of the fruit of harvest: and by this means shall the just be saved from famine, while the nations of the wicked are distressed and faint. In due time shall he go forth toward the north, and by the power of his word shall the deep begin to give way and the ice melt before the sun. By the keys of the Kingdom shall he lead Israel into the land of Zion while the house of Jacob shouts in the danse and in the song— Joy, O my soul, in that day, for thou shalt be with him and bear thy part in the keys which are confirmed thee for an everlasting priesthood, forever and ever— Joy, O my heart, in that day, with thanksgiving and with praise, for thou shalt stand with him before the hosts of Israel— the lame shall leap as a hart, the old shall renew his strength, and the virgin of Israel, with the youth, shall exalt the name of our God upon harps and instruments of tens[e] strings. He shall be a shure arrow in the bow of his God, for he shall be hid under the shadow of his wing. His loins shall be like iron, girded by the hand of the Lord, and his feet shall be swift to execute the commandment of the Most High when he shall say, Destroy. His name shall be had in everlasting remembrance, and his name after him, for they shall be saved to the uttermost. His fame shall be sounded in foreign lands, even to the ends [p. [15]] of the earth, as well as nigh at home: for in this the times shall change— a prophet shall have honor in his own country. His learning and wisdom shall astonish the great, for they shall acknowledge that by his intelligence he has far surpassed their learng and their science. In palaces of governors, rulers and kings shall he be honored, even in his person, for God shall give him power to prevail. He shall be a lawgiver to Israel and shall teach the house of Jacob the statutes of the Most High. His testimony shall shine like the sun, and the weight of his influence shall be like the great river that rises on the east of the lasting hills, and flows into the great deep— so shall his righteousness ever abound. He shall partake of the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: the chief things of the ancient mountains, the precious things that couch beneath, and of the treasures hid in the sand. The records of past ages and generations, and the histories of ancient days shall he bring forth: even the record of the Nephites shall he again obtain, with all those hid up by Mormon, and others who were righteous, and many others, till he is overwhelmed with knowledge. No precious thing shall slumber from his possession, for he shall be covered with the most choice of all ages, till his soul shall be satisfied and his heart shall say, Enough, Enough! In his hands shall the Urim and Thummim remain and the holy ministry, and the keys of the evangelical priesthood, also, for an everlasting priesthood forever, even the patriarchal; for, behold, he is the first patriarch in the last days. He shall sit in the great assembly and general council of patriarchs, and execute the will and commandment of God under the direction of the Ancient of Days; for he shall have his place and act in his station. Behold, my brother Joseph is blessed: blessed are all who bless him, and bles sed are all those whom he blesses. Multitudes, multitudes, shall come to a knowledge of the truth through his ministry, and he shall be welcomed into the presence of kings and the great ones of the earth; for he shall claim his place among the nobles of the earth and shall be reverenced by them. He shall also be filled with abundance of the fat of the earth: his flocks shall bring forth thousands and tens of thousands: his fats [vats] shall overflow with wine and oil: his cattle shall increase to a multitude: he shall have horses and mules, asses, she asses and dromedaries, camels and elephants, and all swift beasts, and when he goes forth in haste his chariots shall roar like the approach of an army: he shall have gold and silver, precious stones, diamonds, pearls, and the pure platina [platinum], with the antiquities of every kind. Thus shall God bless, and thus shall he be prospered: and he shall have peace after a little; for his enemies shall be consumed, many of them, and many shall turn and be his friends in very deed: he shall remain to a good old age, even till his head is like the pure wool. Behold, there is no end to the vision, of the multiplicity of blessings and glories which shall come upon my brother Joseph. He shall possess a mansion on high and have an inheritance in that city which is like pure gold, even like transparent glass. His rest shall be glorious and his name remain forever. Thus closes the vision, and thus it shall be; even so. Amen. Given in the evening of September 22, 1835, and recorded October 3, 1835. Oliver Cowdery.

As recorded by Lucy Mack Smith, mother of the Prophet Joseph Smith:

September 14, 1840

“my husband commenced vomitting blood. I sent immediately for Joseph and Hyrum; who as soon as they came, gave him something to alleviate his distress. This was saturday night. The next morning Joseph came in and told his father, that he should not be troubled any more for the present with the Missourians: “and,” said he, “I can now stay with you as much as you wish.”

. . . [Joseph Smith Sr.] addressed himself to me: “Mother, do you not know, that you are the mother of as great a family as ever lived upon the Earth. The world loves its own, but it does not love us— it hates us because we are not of the world; therefore all their malice is poured out upon us, and they seek to take away our lives. When I look upon my Children and realize that, although they were raised up to do the Lord’s work, yet they must pass through scenes of trouble and affliction as long as they live upon the Earth, my heart is pained and I dread to leave them so surrounded by enemies.

. . . To Joseph he said: Joseph, my son; thou art called to an high and holy calling— thou art even called to do the work of the Lord— hold out faithful and you shall be blessed, and your children after you— you shall even live to finish your work.” -[At this Joseph cried out, weeping “Oh my father will I]- “Yes, said his father, “you shall live to lay out the plan of all the work which, which God has given you to do. This is my dying blessing on your head in the name of Jesus— I also confirm your former blessings upon your head; for it shall be fulfilled, even so. Amen.” (Lucy Mack Smith, History, 1845, pg. 296-98)

Shem is Melchizedek?

I have always wondered about Shem and Melchizedek as the same person or not? I haven’t decided myself the answer to this question, but it is an interesting discussion about significant leaders of the ancient church. It seems to me it is more likely they are the same person, but I would like some discussion about your opinion. Below is some information to help you decide.

Is it possible that Shem and Melchizedek are the same person?

Alma E. Gygi

Melchizedek—Keeper of the Storehouse by Clark Kelley Price

This question is frequently asked and is an interesting one. Let us examine first what we know about Shem. Although the Bible names Shem as the eldest son of Noah (Gen. 5:32), modern-day revelation places Japheth as the eldest (Moses 8:12). Both reports, however, are harmonious in naming Shem as the progenitor of Israel and in the fact that the priesthood descended through Shem to all the great patriarchs after Noah. (1 Chr. 1:24–27.) In this patriarchal order of priesthood, Shem stands next to Noah. He held the keys to the priesthood and was the great high priest of his day. 1

Living contemporary with Shem was a man known as Melchizedek, who was also known as the great high priest. 2 The scriptures give us the details of Shem’s birth and ancestry but are silent as to his ministry and later life. Of Melchizedek, however, the opposite is true. Nothing is recorded about his birth or ancestry, even though the Book of Mormon states that he did have a father. (Alma 13:17–18.) Concerning his ministry and life we have several interesting and important facts. (Gen. 14:18–20Heb. 7:1–4Alma 13:17–18.)

All of this provokes some questions and calls for answers. Were there two high priests presiding at the same time? Why is the record silent concerning Shem’s ministry? Why is nothing known concerning Melchizedek’s ancestry?

Because of this state of knowledge on our part, many Saints and gospel scholars have wondered if these men were the same person. The truth is, we do not know the answer. But an examination of the scriptures is fascinating, because it seems to indicate that these men may have been one and the same. For example, here is the case for their oneness:

  1. The inheritance given to Shem included the land of Salem. Melchizedek appears in scripture as the king of Salem, who reigns over this area.
  2. Shem, according to later revelation, reigned in righteousness and the priesthood came through him. Melchizedek appears on the scene with a title that means “king of righteousness.”
  3. Shem was the great high priest of his day. Abraham honored the high priest Melchizedek by seeking a blessing at his hands and paying him tithes.
  4. Abraham stands next to Shem in the patriarchal order of the priesthood and would surely have received the priesthood from Shem; but D&C 84:5–17says Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek.
  5. Jewish tradition identifies Shem as Melchizedek.3
  6. President Joseph F. Smith’s remarkable vision names Shem among the great patriarchs, but no mention is made of Melchizedek.
  7. Times and Seasons (vol. 6, p. 746) speaks of “Shem, who was Melchizedek. …”

On the other hand, there is a case for their being two distinct personalities. Many persons believe D&C 84:14 is proof that there are perhaps several generations between Melchizedek and Noah. The scripture says, “Which Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek, who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah.”

If it does turn out that Shem and Melchizedek are the same person, this scripture should prove no stumbling block, because it could be interpreted to mean that priesthood authority commenced with Adam and came through the fathers, even till Noah, and then to Shem.

The Connection between Melchizedek and Shem by Tim Barker

Abram Blessed by Melchizedek by Unknown

“…According to Jewish traditions, Melchizedek is Shem, the son of Noah, whom God consecrated to be a priest for ever, and who set up a kingdom on Salem.”(1) Included in his book on the Legends of Old Testament Characters, the Reverend Sabing Baring-Gould includes a quotation from the Targumim, stating, “Melchizedek, who was Shem, son of Noah, king of Jerusalem.” (2) Louis Ginzberg continues this tradition, in his Legends of the Bible (a condensed version of the 7-volume Legends of the Jews), stating that “when Abraham returned from the war, Shem, or, as he is sometimes called, Melchizedek, the king of righteousness, priest of God Most High, and king of Jerusalem, came forth to meet him with bread and wine.” (3) More recently, scholars Raphael Patai and Robert Graves note that, “others again say that Melchizedek (also known as Adoni-Zedek), was Abram’s ancestor Shem, and that he now taught Abram the duties of priesthood…” (4) Numerous other historical Jewish sources confirm this same teaching.

In 1842, Elder John Taylor, then editor of the Times and Seasons, published the following:
From this definite account of driving the “nations apart, when the ancient hills did bow,” all reflecting minds may judge that man was scattered over the whole face of the earth. And with the superior knowledge of men like Noah, Shem (who was Melchizedek) and Abraham, the father of the faithful, three contemporaries, holding the keys of the highest order of the priesthood… (5)

Other Latter-day Apostles have discussed this issue as well. Elder John A. Witdsoe stated:
There is an old Hebrew tradition that Melchizedek was none other than Shem, the son of Noah. As far as the age of Shem is concerned, that is possible. Shem lived five hundred two years after the flood, and Abraham was born two hundred ninety-two years after the flood. Abraham, therefore, must have known Shem. (6)

Additionally, Elder Alvin R. Dyer stated:
Abraham, who was born of the chosen lineage of patriarchs, received the priesthood from Shem, or Melchizedek, who received it from Noah unto whom it had come through the lineage of the fathers from Enoch, unto whom it had come from Adam the first man through his son, Abel. (7)

More recently and readily available, is the CES Institute Manual on the first half of the Old Testament. This manual outlines, amongst other things, 7 points for consideration relating to the identity of Shem and Melchizedek and commonalities between the two. The comments on this issue are based on an Ensign article, by Alma E. Gygi, entitled, “Is it possible that Shem and Melchizedek are the same person?” (8)

Shem’s inheritance included the land of Salem, and Melchizedek was the king of Salem.
Shem “reigned in righteousness” and Melchizedek’s name means “king of righteousness.”
Shem was the great high priest of his day. Abraham honored the high priest Melchizedek by paying him tithes and seeking blessings at his hand.

Abraham stands next to Shem in the patriarchal order of the priesthood and would likely have received the priesthood from him, but according to D&C 84:5-7, Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek.

Jewish tradition identifies Shem as Melchizedek.
President Joseph F. Smith’s vision of the Redemption of the Dead (D&C 138), names Shem among the great patriarchs, but there is no mention of Melchizedek.

Times and Seasons (official church periodical at this time), indicates that Shem was Melchizedek. (9)

On the contrary, some Latter-day Saints, including Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, believes that the two are definitely separate individuals: There is an unsupported tradition to the effect that Melchizedek was the same person as Shem the son of Noah. That this could hardly have been the case is seen from the revelation which says: “Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek, who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah.” (D. & C. 84:14.) In other words, there seem to have been at least two generations between Melchizedek and Shem.(10)

Also for consideration, E. Douglas Clark commented on the matter in his book, The Blessings of Abraham: Becoming a Zion People: Genesis 11:10-11 tells Shem’s life span in the same manner as it tells the life spans of the subsequent patriarchs, implying that Shem died (a passage left unchanged in the Joseph Smith Translation), while the JST Genesis 14 tells that Melchizedek was translated. Second, a latter-day revelation in Doctrine and Covenants 84:14 states that “Abraham received the [Melchizedek] Priesthood from Melchizedek, who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah, and from Noah till Enoch,” which seems to require at least two generations between Melchizedek and Noah. And third, in Joseph F. Smith’s vision of the redemption of the dead, he saw among the host of righteous post-mortal spirits Shem (D&C 138:41), who would not have been there had he been translated. The revelation does not mention seeing Elijah or Enoch or Moses, who, like Melchizedek, had been translated. (11)

It is clear that with the diversity of opinion on the matter, that no definitive revelation has yet been received. As such, the scriptures are sought for further understanding, and where helpful, supplemental sources provide unique insights.

The Catholic Encyclopedia seems to indicate that the connection was developed by the Rabbi’s to suit their own purposes:

The Rabbins [Rabbi’s] identified Melchisedech with Sem, son of Noe, rather for polemic than historic reasons, since they wished to set themselves against what is said of him as a type of Christ “without father, without mother, without genealogy” (He., vii, 3).

In the Epistle to the Hebrews the typical character of Melchisedech and its Messianic import are fully explained. Christ is “a priest forever according to the order of Melchisedech” (Heb,. vii, 6; Ps., cix, 4); “a high priest forever”, etc. (Heb., vi, 20), …i.e. order or manner (Gesenius), not after the manner of Aaron. The Apostle develops his teaching in Heb., vii: Melchisedech was a type by reason (a) of his twofold dignity as priest and king, (b) by reason of his name, “king of justice”, (c) by reason of the city over which he ruled, “King of Salem, that is, king of peace” (v.2), and also (d) because he “without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened unto the Son of God, continueth a priest forever” (v.3). The silence of Scripture about the facts of Melchisedech’s birth and death was a part of the divine plan to make him prefigure more strikingly the mysteries of Christ’s generation, the eternity of His priesthood.” (12)

Interestingly, an early Jewish source, Flavius Josephus is completely silent regarding any connection between Shem and Melchizedek.

James L. Kugel indicates that “some scholars have suggested that this was first done in the context of later Jewish-Christian polemics: if Melchizedek was actually Shem, then he was the ancestor of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the idea of a priesthood extending back through him was less disturbing to Jews than the notion of a “priest of God Most High” who lacked any connection to the Jewish people or the later levitical priesthood.” He goes on to say that:

It seems likely, however, that Melchizedek’s identification with Shem actually came about before any Christian arguments existed (and certainly before the time when Christian arguments seemed to Jews to require refutation). After all, who was Melchizedek to early interpreters? Why was the genealogy of such an important person–the “priest of God Most High,” no less–not mentioned? Identifying him as Shem, whose genealogy was known, provided an answer, and an easily accepted one. (13)
It is interesting to note that Kugel alludes to the idea that Melchizedek, “could be understood as an honorific title given to Shem…” (14)

Whatever the connection is, it remains a mystery. As stated by Alma Gygi, “all of this provokes some questions and calls for answers. Were there two high priests presiding at the same time? Why is the record silent concerning Shem’s ministry? Why is nothing known concerning Melchizedek’s ancestry? Because of this state of knowledge on our part, many Saints and gospel scholars have wondered if these men were the same person. The truth is, we do not know the answer.” (15) When the answer comes, it should satisfy the arguments on either side of the matter.

Dear Gramps,

Recently, one of the “Daily Wows” indicated that Shem was in fact the great high priest “Melchizedek.” However, while sharing this information with one of our ward scriptorians he said that Shem couldn’t be Melchizedek because Melchizedek was born after the flood and Shem was born before the flood. I’ve studied it out also and found that in the Pearl of Great Price, Joseph while talking of teaching in the spirit prisons refers to Shem as the Great Priest. Do you have some insight on this subject? Thanks.

Paula

Dear Paula,

There is much conjecture about who Melchizedek was. Shem is not the only person to whom Melchizedek’s identity has been attributed. B.H. Roberts had this to say-

Melchizedek Blesses Abram by Walter Rane

“Much of mystery is connected with the life and character of Melchizedek. ‘The Jews,’ says Kitto, in admitting Melchizedek’s official superiority to Abraham, ’sought to account for it by alleging that the royal priest was no other than Shem, the most pious of Noah’s sons, who according to the shorter chronology might have lived to the time of Abraham.’ (Biblical Literature, Vol. II, Art. Melchizedek). Others have seen in him Canaan the son of Ham; Ham himself, or even Enoch; while others have held that Melchizedek was no other than the son of God himself under human appearance, and still others take him to have been an angel, the latter being among the wild notions of Origen and his school. (Ibid, as above). All this of course is conjecture, although it is not unreasonable that he may have been Shem the son of Noah” (The Seventy’s Course in Theology, Second Year, p.88).

Here, B.H. Roberts admits the possibility that Melchizedek may have been Shem. That possibility is bolstered by the vision of President Joseph F. Smith, who refers to Shem as the great high priest in D&C 138:41. And in D&C 107:1-3, Melchizedek is referred to as a great high priest –

There are, in the church, two priesthoods, namely, the Melchizedek and Aaronic, including the Levitical Priesthood.

Why the first is called the Melchizedek Priesthood is because Melchizedek was such a great high priest. Before his day it was called the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God.

It is true that Shem lived in the time of Abraham. Shem was born in 2448 B.C. and lived for 602 years. He was 100 years old at the time of the great flood. Abraham was born in 1986 B.C., and was 140 years old when Shem died. But that coincidence in living at the same time only makes their identity a possibility, not a reality.

It is also true that Melchizedek was not the only great high priest, and there is evidence reported by Elder Bruce R. McConkie that Melchizedek was not the son of Noah-

“There is an unsupported tradition to the effect that Melchizedek was the same person as Shem, the son of Noah. That this could hardly have been the case is seen from the revelation which says: ‘Abraham received the priesthood from Melchizedek, who received it through the lineage of his fathers, even till Noah.’ (D.&C. 84:14.) In other words, there seem to have been at least two generations between Melchizedek and Shem (Mormon Doctrine, p.475).   Gramps

The LDS Bible dictionary says, under the heading Shem says, Name. Son of Noah (Gen. 5:29–326:107:138:169:26Moses 8:12); his descendants (Gen. 10:21–3111:10–321 Chr. 1:17Luke 3:36). Shem was the traditional ancestor of the Shemitic or Semitic races, a group of kindred nations, which includes the Arabs, the Hebrews and Phoenicians, the Arameans or Syrians, the Babylonians and Assyrians. The languages spoken by these various nations were closely related and were known as the Semitic languages. In latter-day revelation Shem is referred to as “the great high priest” (D&C 138:41). See also Melchizedek.

The LDS Bible dictionary says, under the heading Melchizedek says, “King of Righteousness. A notable prophet and leader who lived about 2000 B.C. He is called the king of Salem (Jerusalem), king of peace, and “priest of the most High God.” Unfortunately, information concerning him in the Bible is relatively scarce, being limited to Gen. 14:18–20Heb. 5:67:1–3. Mention of the priesthood of Melchizedek is given in several other instances, primarily in Psalms and in Hebrews. However, latter-day revelation gives us much more about him and his priesthood (see JST Gen. 14:17 [Gen. 14:18 note d]JST Gen. 14:25–40JST Heb. 7:3 [Appendix]Alma 13:14–19D&C 84:14107:1–4). From these sources we realize something of the greatness of this prophet and the grandeur of his ministry. See also JebusJerusalemMelchizedek Priesthood.

A FIRM Foundation Conference- April 2019

To our Great Sponsors, Speakers and Guests:

“The FIRM Foundation Expo, featuring The 23rd International Book of Mormon Evidence Conference, was a huge success. According to our estimates over 7,300 attended over the three-day event from April 11-13, 2019. That is nearly 700 more than last year’s event, making it the biggest ever. Ticket sales were up 9% over last April’s event.  Our advertising through KNRS and KTKK Radio, Deseret News, LDS Living, and Facebook reached over 450,000 members of the Church with views, listens and clicks. We thank you all for your support.

This Expo featured 92 individual speakers, 161 one-hour presentations, and 90 vendors and sponsors. We occupied nearly the entire Davis County Conference Center in Layton Utah. For a second time it featured the Zelph-Zone fun center, which was artistically created by cartoonist, Val Chadwick Bagley.  Val has created cartoons for Church magazines for over 40 years and has sold over 1,000,000 items through Covenant Communications! His 12 brand-new cartoons were a huge hit for our attendee’s.

James & Hannah Stoddard. Packed the rooms for 4 presentations.

Most vendors recorded above average or record sales from their vendor booths. Jeff Midgley of TNT Medical said, “We crushed it, and next time I will need a third booth space.” Arto Pihlajisto with Elevated Camping/Survival/Preparedness said, “We usually sell a lot of $25 products and not as many high-priced items. We sold out of all our products that sold for over $250 each.” Pamela and Bob Openshaw said, “Wonderful show.” Wayne May told us he had an “Exceptional experience” at this Expo. James Prout of “The Last Days Timeline” said, “The conference was a success.” W. Dennis Parker, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist said, “as usual I was very happy to have participated.” Shannon Brooks of Monticello College said he had a very successful show and received many fantastic leads. Chad Lewis of “Cylinder Stoves” said he “had a fantastic location and received a lot of great referrals.”

Our speakers included a plethora of our ‘regulars’ plus interesting new speakers such as Patti Rokus who explained that “Rocks Tell Stories” and if correctly utilized they can bring the Joy of the Savior into our lives. Troy Forsberg, who presented Christianity: Is it Worth it? had a wonderful message.  Cindy Jorgensen of Isagenix spoke about “Overcoming Health Challenges” and had a very successful show. Eva Mayor our wonderful 14 yr. old operatic singer and her parents Jenny and Ryan added so much joy of music to our show. Jason Mow rocked the stage with his energetic Warrior Ethos presentation. Jonathan Neville exclaimed, “This was the best conference so far. I learned a lot, but also thought the quality and content of the presentations was better than ever.” James and Hannah Stoddard released a new and wonderful book called “Seer Stone vs. Urim & Thummim” and gave four amazing presentations and FIRM president Rod Meldrum spoke on and then released a new DVD based on President Hinckley’s talk wherein he proclaims the Book of Mormon is as current as the daily news, linking today’s headlines with the books prophecies. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to everyone!”.

Wayne May at the Davis Conference Center April 13, 2019. Nearly 900 guests attended.

The Main Hall was filled with almost 1,000 guests to hear our Keynote speaker, Tim Ballard of Operation Underground Railroad!  He shared an inspiring presentation about the covenant nation of America and how President Abraham Lincoln’s reading of the Book of Mormon may have crystallized his understanding that the Civil War must happen to humble the people and end slavery. He also shared details and showed a ‘confidential’ clip about his upcoming Hollywood movie called “The Sound of Freedom” to be released this November. It is a true account of one of the children rescued by Tim Ballard and his undercover team while saving hundreds of children being used as sex slaves.  Actor Jim Caviezel said, “the greatest role of his life was portraying Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 film, “The Passion of the Christ.” But his second most significant role is one he has yet to play as Tim Ballard.

We want to THANK each and every one of you for participating and supporting this wonderful event.  We hope that it has been successful and a blessing for all.  We hope that everyone – from the attendee’s, to the vendors, to the speakers – came away enriched in mind, sole, body, spirit and pocketbook

FIRM Foundation Expo will return to the Utah County area for our 24th International Book of Mormon Evidence Conference to be held Fri and Sat. Sept 27-28, 2019 at the Utah Valley Conference Center, downtown Provo. (Their Website Here) Remember this is our 2-Day event and will only have one main stage for all speakers. Presentations will be primarily Book of Mormon related research and Church history. We welcome any vendors who would like to be there regardless of whether you have Book of Mormon products. We welcome vendors from Health and Preparedness, United States Constitution, Church History, Science, End Times, Prophesy and Gospel Subjects and any other vendors that have an appropriate product or service.

Our first 2020 event will be held April 9, 10, and 11th at the Mountain America Exposition Center at 9575 S State St in Sandy, UT 84070. This will be the FIRM Foundation Expo featuring the 25th International Book of Mormon Evidence Conference which again will have six stages so we can have over 85 speakers, just like this year’s Expo.

If you would like to reserve a vendor table for September, please let me know early. We have over 60 regular vendors that participate all the time, so tables will be limited.

We will be reporting information about the conference on our Facebook page here, and blog here, if you would like to stay in touch with us. We would appreciate your feedback about the event. The good news and the challenges. There are many things we can improve on and it is important that you share some of those things with us. What did we do wrong? How can we improve? Would you return to our Expo, yes or no and why?

Once again, we thank each of you very much for your support as we know we can’t do these Expo’s without it. Our best to each of you and we hope to see you in September.” Rod Meldrum and Rian Nelson

Healing Drum
Betty “Red Ant” LaFontaine said, “After learning that Tim Ballard would be at the 23rd Book of Mormon Conference as a speaker on April 12, 2019, My husband Mike and I wanted to honor Tim with a handmade drum. He is a man that would be held in great honor within the Native culture as someone who gives of his life for the betterment of mankind, especially children! I am sure he and his family have sacrificed for the cause. My dear husband Mike wrapped the drum at home in Florida before we arrived in Utah for the conference. He used southern red cedar wood and framed and wrapped it with Elk rawhide. I searched and waited for inspiration about what to paint on the drum. After time, It came to me as I thought of the children who would finally see the end of their horrific experience. My emotions were high as I painted the drum. In my hand the strokes of the paint brush felt guided by a power of light and hope. Late into the night, quiet and alone the story of the drum came alive.

First the Sun at the top of the drum representing our Savior, his light his warmth. Through all of His suffering He was always with us. Then on the top right, painted white, the sign of Heaven representing those who Prayed for the children from the Heavens. Then below that sign in white is Gods eye who never left them and how He never leaves any of us. At the left of the drum is the sign of “Home Coming” that the children would now go home to their loved ones. Home because of the work of Tim and his team and their fight for them. The Operation Underground Railroad logo represents the entire team that works to save children. Below that to the right is the 8-sided white star, a sign of “Hope & Guidance” for the rescued children will now have the hope & guidance of the Lord and all who care for them. At the bottom left are three children which represent all children that have been saved or will be saved and the number three Is also a sign of the Father, the Son & the Holy Ghost.

As we sat in the audience and listened to Tim talk of his work and watching the trailer of his movie to come out in Nov 2019 called “The Sound of Freedom”, my heart sank. I became so emotional I could not breath! Mike leaned over to me and whispered, “you don’t have to do this we can sit this out!” I started to say a silent prayer in my heart asking Father for strength to have the capacity to present this drum to this amazing man! Thinking how on earth this man has the strength to do this work! As soon as I said Amen, I said let’s do this Mike.

Later someone reminded me that the little girl that was shown as abused in the movie, continued to beat on a box like a drum! It seemed this beating made her cope with the awful things that had been done to her. I thought that amazingly the beat of this drum we gave to Tim, may be a sign, that with each sound of a drum a child may be healed! It was an honor for us to present Tim with this special Native drum. He is one of Gods special warriors!

I will try and do more for these children. I pray for them who have been wounded and that their spirits will heal, that they will know how special they are to those that love them especially God our Creator!

David W. Allan helped develop the atomic-clock timekeeping system for the US and for the world, while working for the National Bureau of Standards (later renamed the National Institute of Standards and Technology — NIST) with the responsibility to generate official time for the United States. David spoke at the FIRM Foundation Expo and said the following.

“The Book of Mormon Evidence Conference was a smashing success (11-13 April 2019) – showing the Book of Mormon to be a Hebrew text and proving its validity with strong Jewish traditions.

Joseph Smith prophesied that the world would prove him a prophet. We are there. The millennials want proof and to know what is true; we have it for them.

I have never had so many sincere compliments on a presentation that I have given. I offered proof of where the Book of Mormon took place and why it is very important for America to wake up and REPENT – to come to the God of this land, who is Jesus the Christ! The background for my address came from an article I have written.

Two of the conference speakers were Jewish converts. I received permission from Robert Kay, who is a Cohen descendent and well learned in the traditions of the Jews, to tell about his conversion story and his contributions pertaining to Hebraisms in the Book of Mormon.

I am reading again his version of the Book of Mormon showing the Hebraisms and how it profoundly ties to the Adamic language as well as to Hebrew culture. LDS Living published an article showing my research on the Adamic language.

Book of Mormon Midrash
Most people don’t know what a Hebrew Midrash is: The Torah (the five books of Moses) is explained in great detail by the Tabbies in the Talmud. In the Talmud they often uses a Midrash to show the significance and implications of meaning to a particular verse of scripture.

At the conference I was greatly impressed to learn that Nephi, Jacob, and Abinadi were doing Hebrew Midrashs on the scriptures they were quoting from Isaiah and Zenos. In particular, Nephi is doing a Midrash on Isaiah 48 and 49 (1 Nephi 20 and 21) in 1 Nephi 22 – showing its relevance for our day. This chapter has been one of my favorites over the years; now it has even greater meaning. In addition, Nephi is doing a Midrash on Isaiah chapters 2-14 (compare 2 Nephi 12-24) just after he quotes them. His Midrash follows in 2 Nephi 25-29.

Jacob is doing a Midrash on Zeno’s allegory as he shares it and his comments in Jacob 4-6. I have a blog article showing the significance of this allegory: Some of Zenos’s writings were found in 1906.

Abinadi is testifying of the atonement of Christ in King Noah’s court as he does a Midrash on Isaiah 53 before he was martyred. See Mosiah chapters 14-16. Abinadi’s testimony converted Alma. The impact of the conversions of Alma and his son, Alma the younger, have impacted millions of lives in bringing them to Christ.

Some of the protagonists say that Joseph copied scriptures from the Bible into the Book of Mormon. At the conference, this was proven not true. There are 433 verses of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon and over half of them are significantly different, and those differences often reflect the Hebraisms.

The historical documentation around the coming forth of the Book of Mormon proves its divinity. It was translated in approximately 65 days and the printing was a miracle also.

In contrast, it took the 51 King James scholars seven years to pull together the KJV of the Bible, then 76 % of what they used was William Tyndale’s translation.

Book of Jasher
At the conference, I learned from David Hocking that the Book of Jasher, which is referenced in the Bible but not included, was found in Europe in Hebrew and translated into English in 1840 – ten years after the Book of Mormon was published. The Book of Jasher has 91 chapters and covers from Adam down to Joshua. Like the Bible, the Book of Mormon references contents of the Book of Jasher. This itself shows direct evidence of the validity of the Book of Mormon.

David Hocking and Rod Meldrum are the editors of the newly published Annotated Book of Mormon, which sold 5,000 copies of the first printing last Fall. They have printed 20 thousand more and they are nearly gone. Rod has added quotes from the prophets and pictures of likely places for the geography. I have read it and believe it is one the best books on the planet to build faith in the Lord and to show that America is the Promised Land spoken of in the Book of Mormon and prophesied of in the Bible.

Timothy Ballard Address
The capstone talk of the conference was Timothy Ballard’s. Tim has probably done more than any other human on the planet to stop the horrible human trafficking problem. He has consulted with President Trump on this problem, been on the Glen Beck show, written the bestselling book, The American Covenant, and has saved a large number of children along with arresting many of those involved with this heinous sin. One of the amazing arrests of 15 perpetrators of child pedophelia and the saving of 125 children in that operation was so significant that Columbia Pictures is going to make a movie of it that should be out this November, “The Sounds of Freedom.”

Tim also shared a synopsis of his bestselling book, The Lincoln Hypothesis, showing how the Book of Mormon changed Lincoln’s life and religious freedom in this country. It is an amazing story and a story everyone should know.

It is so exciting to see the Lord’s hand in sharing the gospel around the world and to be a part of it. The best thing we can do is to “learn of me…” (Matt. 11: 28-30) “find rest unto your souls.” Live and share His glorious message of LOVE.” David W Allan Website Here

After the FIRM Foundation Expo, Warrior Jason Mow said,
“First, I want to thank all of the great folks who came to my booth during the conference and hung out with me and my son. You all are awesome and I am so glad I got to met you and spend some time getting to hear your warrior stories and how much you love the books I wrote about the life of Captain Moroni and the weekly pod cast.

I did not think the weekend could get any better, then I got done speaking Saturday night right before Tim Ballard and your reaction to my “Warrior Ethos” was overwhelming. Humbled is not even close to describing my feelings as I looked out and saw all of you cheering. I am not gonna lie, I got a little misty eyed with gratitude for the blessings of heaven and the second chance God gave me to tell my warrior story. I hope you all took the Warrior Ethos to heart and find your own path. I hope those who purchased the historical fiction series of books I wrote about Captain Moroni and the War Chapters enjoy them. I know I sure enjoyed writing them. There is still plenty of story left and I am slaving away on book #4. Be good to yourself and each other, I will see you all again real soon. Remember, you are a Warrior!” Jason Mow

Were the Mayans & Aztecs Scattered by the Gentiles?

So we ask the question, Were the Mayans & Aztecs Scattered by the Gentiles? The simple answer is No! However the Native American Lamanite in the USA was SMITTEN and SCATTERED.

Annotated Book of Mormon page 253. click to Purchase .

We believe the Lamanites and Jews (who were one in the same mixed race), were smitten and scattered for their unbelief. The Jews have been scattered all over the world. The Native Americans were pushed and scattered to lands west of the Mississippi. Who has smitten and scattered these groups? The Gentiles or the europeans and others who were non-Jewish.

“Which is my word to the Gentile, that soon it may go to the Jew, of whom the Lamanites are a remnant, that they may believe the gospel, and look not for a Messiah to come who has already come.” D&C 19:27

“And then shall the remnant of our seed know concerning us, how that we came out from Jerusalem, and that they are descendants of the Jews.” 2 Nephi 30:4

We also know that Lehi was a direct descendant of Manasseh and the daughters of Ishmael were Ephraimites. Further we understand the people of Mulek to be from the tribe of Judah, and the Mulekites and Nephites combined together into a mixed race. We also know the Jaredites were of Asian descent. See article here:

Can you see the great mixture of people at Hill Cumorah? The most important thing was to know that the seed of Lehi was left at that hill. The Lamanites had a mixture of Joseph and Judah and they remained in North America previous to Columbus.

“And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise, and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren, and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.” (1 Nephi 13:14)

“And also that a knowledge of these things must come unto the remnant of these people, and also unto the Gentiles, who the Lord hath said should scatter this people, and this people should be counted as naught among them—therefore write a small abridgment, daring not to give a full account of the things which I have seen, because of the commandment which I have received, and also that ye might not have too great sorrow because of the wickedness of this people.” (Mormon 5:9)

On the other hand have the Mayans and Aztecs been smitten and scattered? They may have been oppressed but not scattered. The Mayans of 700 AD are the fathers of the Mayans of 2018 today. Most of the Mayans have come from Asia, and they weren’t scattered by the Gentiles. There has been only Asian DNA found for the people of Central and South America. On the other hand DNA of the Native Americans near the Great Lakes has matched DNA among the Iraqi Jew, the Ashkenazi Jew and other Jews. See blog post here: DNA article here:

Elder Larry J. Echo Hawk, General Authority Seventy (left), talks about his great-grandfather (right) during his June 27 LDS Business College devotional address at the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. Click for Article

Elder Larry Echohawk, Emeritus General Authority, a descendant of the Pawnee Indian tribe describes his great-grandfather being forced from their native homeland in the Midwest:

“On the title page [of the Book of Mormon] I read that it is “written to the Lamanites, who are a remnant of the House of Israel; and also to Jew and Gentile.” In the introduction to the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, it says that the Lamanites “are among the ancestors of the American Indians.” As I read the Book of Mormon, it seemed to me that it was about my American Indian ancestors. It tells the story of a people, a part of which were later described as “Lamanites,” who migrated from Jerusalem to a “land of promise” (1 Nephi 2:20) about 600 B.C. It is an account of God’s dealings with these ancient inhabitants located somewhere on the American continents…Their prophets foretold that many multitudes of Gentiles would eventually come to this land of promise and the wrath of God would be upon the Lamanites and they would be scattered, smitten, and nearly destroyed.

“My great-grandfather Echo Hawk, a Pawnee Indian, was born in the mid-1800s in what is now called Nebraska. When he was 19 years of age, the Pawnee people were forced to give up their 23-million-acre (9.3 million-hectares) homeland to make room for settlers. In 1874 the Pawnee people were marched several hundred miles south to a small reservation located in the Oklahoma Indian Territory… “The Book of Mormon has a special message for descendants of the Lamanites, a remnant of the house of Israel. Nephi expressed this message while interpreting his father’s vision of these latter days: “And at that day shall the remnant of our seed know that they are of the House of Israel, and that they are the covenant people of the Lord; and then shall they know and come to the knowledge of their forefathers, and also to the knowledge of the gospel of their Redeemer, which was ministered unto their fathers by Him…” (1 Nephi 15:14)” – Elder Larry Echo Hawk, “Come Unto Me, O Ye House of Israel,” Ensign, [Nov. 2012].

“The population of Pawnee people had declined from over 12,000 to less than 700 upon their arrival in Oklahoma. The Pawnee, like other tribes, had been scattered, smitten, and nearly destroyed” – Larry Echo Hawk, “Come Unto Me, O Ye House of Israel,” Ensign, [Nov. 2012].

Heber J. Grant; Dedication of the Land of Japan

Article from Joseph Smith Foundation’s website Here

Journal of Elder Alma O. Taylor, Relief Society Magazine JANUARY, 1921, pg. 199-203. After supper we sat out in the garden together, talking over the future and the problems which it presented. It was a beautiful moonlight evening, and there came a gentle breeze from off the ocean that filled the air with freshness most delightful, as we looked from our elevated position out over the city. Below we could see thousands of flickering lights which burned as if in rivalry to the starry brightness of the sky. Among the quivering branches of the trees the “katy-dids” were singing with buzzing harmony their evening songs, and upon our ears there fell the occasional cry of a blind beggar as he wandered through the streets below in search of alms.

In the distance there arose the assuring sound of the night watchman’s signal, which, as he came nearer, grew louder and louder, then died away again as he passed along his beat. As we sat there drinking in the beauty of the surroundings, our hearts were filled with tranquility. Our minds wandered back to the scenes of the past ; and our hopes hastened on to view the events of the future. We thought of home, with its familiar faces, its joy’s, its sorrows, and all its endearing features, but as the longing to be back again amid those scenes crept over us, the path of duty appeared before our eyes. And as we looked along its course, beholding in the distance the glorious future to which it led, the pleasures, joys, and brightness of all that_ we had left behind, faded from before the contemplation of that coming day when our hearts would be made glad in the salvation of the souls of men.

Indeed, the happiness of the past became as the darkness of night which flees from the light and glory of the day. We went to our rooms and poured out our souls to God, expressing the thanks which we felt for his blessings and mercy. To the sweet strain of music, which came from a neighboring house, we dropped off to sleep, and in slumber bade farewell to the month of August, and welcomed the dawn of September’s morn.

(From August 31, Alma O. Taylor’s Journal.) Outline for a prayer meeting held in the woods near Yokohama, Stmday, September 1, 1901, by Apostle Heber J. Grant and his companion missionaries, Elders Louis A. Kelsch, Horace S. Ensign and Alma O. Taylor. Taken from the journal of Elder Alma O. Taylor: This being fast day we ate no breakfast, but went out into the woods about eleven o’clock to hold a prayer meeting. After about a twenty minutes’ walk from our rooms, we came to a secluded spot in a small grove situated on the South slope of one of the rolling hills lying to the south of Yokohama, and about mid-way between the foreign residences on the Bluff and the bay.

Sitting down in a circle on the ground, we opened our meeting by singing, “We thank thee, O God, for a prophet.” Brother Grant offered the opening prayer which was followed with another prayer by Brother Kelsch. Sang, “Now let us rejoice in the day of salvation,” after which Brother Ensign continued in prayer, and without changing from our kneeling position our supplication was continued, myself being mouth. The principal features of our prayers were expressions of thanksgiving and praise to God; invocations for strength to perform the duties that rested upon us as missionaries in this land; and also that the Spirit of God would rest upon Apostle Grant to the extent that he would be able to offer up an acceptable dedicatory prayer: for the main object of our going into the woods was to dedicate this land unto the Lord for the proclamation of the gospel. After the four prayers had been offered up, we sang, “Come, come, ye Saints.”

We again knelt in a circle, and Brother Grant offered up the dedicatory prayer. His tongue was loosed and the Spirit rested mightily upon him ; so much so that we felt the angels of God were near, for our hearts burned within us as the words fell from his lips. I never experienced such a peaceful influence or heard such a powerful prayer before. Every word penetrated into my very bones, and I could have wept for joy.

The following is an outline of the prayer, as I remember it :

(A) An appeal unto the Lord to hear the words that would be uttered.

(B) An expression of thanks for the preservation of our lives ; for the testimony of the gospel which we had in our hearts ; and for the great blessing of being considered worthy, in the eyes of the Prophet of the Lord, to go as messengers of life and salvation unto a people who had never heard the gospel.

(C) An entreaty for the forgiveness of our sins.

(D) Dedication of the land for the proclamation of the truth, and for the bringing to pass of the purposes of the Lord concerning the gathering of Israel and the establishment of righteousness upon the earth.

(E) By the power of the Priesthood and in the name of Jesus, Satan was commanded to release his hold upon the minds of the people, and rebuked in his efforts to overcome the work of the Lord in this land.

(F) Words of praise unto God for preserving the people of Japan from the power of the Great and Abominable Church, and that he had blessed the Japanese with sufficient knowledge to see the shallowness of the man-made Christianity which was sought to be introduced among them.

(G) Petitioned the Lord to touch the hearts of the people, that they might know that we were men of virtue, honor, and devotion, and that we had come among them to do them good ; that their minds might be directed into channels of religious thought, and their heart? prepared to recognize the truth when it was declared unto them, being even as sheep, quick to recognize the voice of the shepherd,

(H) Thanks for the talents with which we had been blessed and a dedication of them to the work of the Lord.

(I) A request that we be endowed with every qualification needed in opening up this mission.

(J) A prayer for the Church and the Priesthood.

(K) A personal mention of the goodness of the Lord in preserving the life of Apostle Grant during the severe attack of sickness which he had been called upon to pass through some years ago ; when he was given up to die by nearly all his friends. He felt that the Lord had restored him to come upon this mission.

(L) Thanks for the companions which he had. For the integrity of Brother Kelsch, who had been in the mission field for the past ten years, but was willing to come to this land and continue his labors for the salvation of souls ; for the ready heart of Brother Ensign in responding cherfully to the call to go out and preach the gospel, in spite of the fact that he had but lately returned from a mission to Colorado ; and for his youthful companion, “even Alma,” who in spite of his youth had been favored of the Lord with much intelligence and knowledge, and a love for the truth which caused him to accept joyfully the call to come to this land and devote himself to the spread of truth. He asked his heavenly Father to continue in blessing me with further knowledge and power to use the same in righteousness, that I might become as Alma of old, full of the Spirit, and powerful in the Word of God.

(M) Words of gratitude for the love that we had for each other and the unity which existed among us.

(N) A request that the Three Nephites would visit us and assist us in our work.

(O) Spoke of the righteousness of Lehi and of the great faith of Nephi in doing whatsoever the Lord commanded him. Also spoke of those, who, because of iniquity, had been cut off from among the Nephites and cursed with a dark skin, like unto the Lamanites, the blood of Lehi and Nephi had been transmitted unto the people of this land, many of whom have the features and manners of the American Indians. Asked the Lord that if this were true, that he would not forget the integrity of his servants Lehi and Nephi, and would verify the promises made unto them concerning their descendants in the last days, upon this people, for we felt that they were a worthy nation.

After this dedicatory prayer had been offered up, we sang, “The time is far spent.” Following this. Brother Grant read the prayer offered by Apostle Orson Hyde, when upon the Mt. of Olives, dedicating the land of Palestine for the gathering and future home of the Jews. Brothers Grant, Kelsch, Ensign, and myself, spoke in the order named; expressing the feelings of our hearts, and telling of our love for each other and our earnest desires and determination to labor with all the zeal which we possessed for the success of the work of the Lord in this land. We then sang, “O my Father.” Before dismissing we considered the advisibility of separating into twos and going into the interior of the country. We all seemed favorable to this movement. Closing song, “God moves in a mysterious way.” Benediction was offered by Brother Ensign.

The Book of Mormon Current as the Daily News!

Elder Gordon B. Hinckley, 1st Counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson, proclaimed that the Book of Mormon “is as current as the morning newspaper”, “in its descriptions of the problems of today’s society.” The Power of the Book of Mormon, Ensign June 1988

The American Prophet Moroni testified that “Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.” Mormon 8:35

Using these two quotations as a guide, author Rod Meldrum explores some of the Book of Mormon prophecies that pertain to our day and compare them directly with news headlines from the mainstream media of the USA.

To understand the signs of our day, we must read the Book of Mormon!

The Book of Mormon Prophets warned a very specific nation about the consequences of being wicked, upon God’s Promised Land. In Rod Meldrum”s latest DVD, he clearly demonstrates how the Book of Mormon is as “Current as the Daily News.”

In his 2-hour presentation Rod discusses the 4 Sacred Covenants that George Washington invoked at St. Paul’s Cathedral during his inauguration – the same sacred ground the New York Twin Towers collapsed on during 911. Take a trip through current news headlines and see why America’s promised blessings are now being revoked, leaving her in grave peril and judgment from God. With this warning will the people living in our nation, foretold by ancient prophets in the Book of Mormon still serve Jesus Christ, the God of this sacred covenant land?

Whatever Happened to the Golden Plates? By Jonathan Neville

This is the book that explains the “two-sets-of-plates” scenario that everyone is talking about. It is an awesome book for LDS audiences who are familiar with Church history and want to learn more. The book explains that Joseph translated two sets of plates, that Mormon’s repository was in New York, and that the plates are still not far from Cumorah.

The traditional version of Church history is that Moroni buried the golden plates in the Hill Cumorah in a stone-and-cement box he built in the hillside. 1400 years later, Moroni directed Joseph Smith to the stone box. In 1827, Joseph obtained the plates and translated them into what is now known as the Hill Cumorah.

The traditional story is correct regarding the “original” Book of Mormon, as Joseph described it. But the “original” Book of Mormon did not include the small plates of Nephi. Today, this is known as 1 Nephi through Words of Mormon.

The DVD of the same topic has just been released. Watch Jonathan Neville at various conferences as he explains more details of his new research in Church History. More detail than the book and additional pictures in his newest presentations.

Missionary Work Using Heartland Research

The primary goal of every member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should be to help others find happiness through sharing the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Once converted and a testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel has been gained, the Lord asked his followers to spread His word to others, that all of God’s children might partake in His grace, His blessings and enjoy salvation.  How great shall be your joy if you bring but one soul back to Christ, but how much greater will be your joy by bringing in many more. (D&C 18:15-16).  The Book of Mormon is the “Keystone” of our religion, thus defending its truths and providing evidence for its reality is critical in establishing its authenticity.  While a testimony of its truthfulness is gained through a witness of the Holy Spirit, the book itself prophesies that there will be evidence to establish its physical truth as well.  We have found that the Heartland Model Geography has the power to dramatically increase missionary success.  Read the following accounts of missionary success using the Heartland Model in missionary work.

NOTE:  Don’t miss the extra special offers for Missionaries, CES, Institute & Seminary Instructors & Military Personnel!

Scroll to the bottom of this page!

One of the greatest blessings we can bestow to others is the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.  The “Keystone” of the restored gospel is the Book of Mormon, another witness of Jesus Christ like unto the Bible.  It has been said that the restored Church of Jesus Christ rises or falls on the truthfulness of this sacred ancient record – a history of real people, places and events of antiquity in America.  While individual salvation may not be dependent upon our knowing where the Book of Mormon took place, it is vital to know the location of its lands because the ancient prophet/writers devoted a significant amount of time and space on the gold plates in an attempt to warn a very specific “nation” that would one day occupy their lands. If we cannot come to an understanding of what nation they were warning, of what value are their warnings?  Have their efforts been in vain?  Individual salvation may not rest upon recognizing the covenant land upon which the Book of Mormon civilizations lived and died, but the “salvation” of the nation occupying those lands in the latter days is absolutely tied to those prophecies, promises and judgments of God. This is why it is not only valuable, but essential, that we come to an understanding of the truth of where the Book of Mormon lands were located.

A Covenant Responsibility – Missionary Work To Bless the Nations of the Earth with the Gospel

As has been established by an understanding of the nature of the sacred covenant which resides upon the land now known as the United States of America, (read The Scriptural Basis for the Heartland Model Geography HERE) it is clear that this nation is under a covenant that includes a duty bound obligation to bless the nations of the earth with the gospel through missionary work (Abraham 2:11, Genesis 22:18) . The covenant nation will receive special blessings from the Lord in order to fulfill His charge to bring His gospel to all the nations of the earth.  This covenant, as it applies to this specific latter-day nation, is being called The American Covenant.

How the Covenant Supports Missionary Work

How does this covenant support missionary work; the ability to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ?  As outlined in the article referenced above, there are two covenant and promised lands in the world, known anciently and today as Jerusalem/Canaan in the Old World, and New Jerusalem/Cainan in the New World.  These lands have been given, by covenant, to the Lord’s chosen people together with special blessings to specifically support missionary work.

1. a specific LAND or base from which to develop and grow a missionary culture,

2. POSTERITY without which the gospel cannot be physically preached to other nations,

3. PROSPERITY to support financially those missionary efforts and,

4. SECURITY so that service can be rendered toward missionary work, rather than compulsory military service for the country.

Missionary Statistics – Evidence of the American Covenant

Today the Church has the largest missionary force the world has ever known scattered throughout the world, yet 80% of all missionaries worldwide consistently come from one single nation, the United States, and of the 20% serving missions from other nations nearly half receive financial assistance from Church membership in the U.S.

MTC Choir at Missionary Fireside
Worldwide Missionary Broadcast from the Marriott Center, Provo, June 23, 2013 – MTC Missionary Choir

Is it any wonder why the ancient prophets spent valuable time, effort and space on the gold plates attempting to warn this specific nation not to allow the secret combinations that destroyed their civilization to get above it?

The ancient prophets saw in vision that should this nation, the United States of America, fall into unrighteousness, God’s judgments and subsequent removal of His covenant blessings of security, prosperity, and posterity would result in its collapse, which would have a direct and devastating impact on the latter-day Church’s ability to carry out its mission of spreading the gospel throughout the world.  Missionary families living in an insecure nation with a collapsing economy would likely find it impossible to support their sons and daughters on missions.  Such events would undoubtedly render the Church’s missionary effort unable to continue to bless the other nations of the earth.

Accordingly, this nation’s covenant and founding principles must be vigorously upheld through righteous leaders in order for it to carry on its sacred responsibility to “bless the nations of the earth” with the gospel.  That is why it is critical to understand “where” the covenant and promised lands of the Book of Mormon were located.  That nation today is the United States of America.  The warnings to this nation are clear…and eminent.  Therefore, based on these prophecies, it should also be absolutely clear where the lands of the Book of Mormon were actually located.

Enhancing Missionary Success Through Book of Mormon Evidences In the Heartland Geography Model

The Heartland Geography Model offers logical, solid and highly referenced answers – from the scriptures, prophets and non-LDS experts – to many previously unanswered or unanswerable questions asked by members, missionaries, non-members and investigators alike.  Many questions now finally have honest answers such as the alleged lack of evidence for the Book of Mormon claims of:

– A voyage to America by Hebrews originating in Jerusalem and sailing from Saudi Arabia

– Hebrew DNA among Native American populations

– Gold, silver, copper and iron mining, metal smelting and the resultant artifacts

– Cities built using ditches, earth embankments and timber walls and towers

– A literate civilization utilizing Hebrew or Egyptian written language forms

– Requisite animals such as sheep, goats, horses and elephants

– A climate conducive to the growing of wheat, barley, corn and grapes

– A highly advanced culture having knowledge of astronomy and mathematics

– A candidate civilization having evidence of living the Law of Moses with other Jewish customs and symbolism

– Two major civilizations that date archaeologically within Book of Mormon time frames

– Civilizations that built cities, temples and buildings primarily out of wood, with occasional cement, but no stone

– Two coexisting cultures; One agricultural and urban, the other nomadic tent dwellers, depending upon migrating beasts

Each of the items above have been problematic when trying to answer questions about them using previous geography theories, because of the lack of such evidences.

Successful Missionary Work Through the Heartland Geography Research

For many years Ancient American publisher Wayne May has tried to help the membership of the Church realize the vast archaeological evidence that exists in the Heartland of North America in support of the historicity of the Book of Mormon.  However, due to decades of promotion by Mesoamerican theorists his findings remained unknown to the vast majority of Church members.  When the DNA controversy became center stage in the Church around 2002 and the answers from Mesoamerican scholars provided no support for the Book of Mormon because of the complete absense of any Hebraic or Jewish DNA lineages found among the ancient Mayan people or kings of Mesoamerica, members of the Church had no legitimate answers to the DNA questions.  Mesoamerican theory promoters claimed that since there is no DNA evidence in Mesoamerica that none should even be expected for various genetic reasons.  This, however, contradicts the many prophecies in the Book of Mormon text itself that emphatically state that there will be a remnant of the House of Israel upon the Promised Land in the latter days (1 Nephi 15:12-16, 2 Nephi 9:53,30:4, Alma 46:23-24, 3 Nephi 21:22-23, Ether 13:6-8, Mormon 7:9-10, .  At this point the DNA research by Rod Meldrum became of critical importance in defending the Book of Mormon and the gospel.

Since beginning to share his Heartland Geography Model research in 2006, and the release of his first DVD, DNA Evidence for Book of Mormon Geography, in 2008, the acceptance and growth of this refreshing new information has been astounding.  It has been completely amazing to witness the ability of this research to bring former members back into the gospel, cause those who had become inactive to return to full activity and even become the catalyst for many non-members to read and embrace the Book of Mormon!  And the number of such wonderful people being strengthened in the gospel has been estimated to be well over 10,000 souls from around the world.  Members and non-members, the old and the young, missionaries and converts alike have expressed their thanks for sharing these profound new evidences that support the Book of Mormon like never before.  We would like to express our gratitude for all of the emails, letters and notes, brought about because of the strengthening of testimonies, the returns back to full fellowship in the gospel, the thrill of new memberships in the Church and everyone whose journey to the truths of the gospel were in some way enhanced through this research. May and Meldrum’s research has been dramatically added upon through the research and expertise of dozens of scholars, enthusiasts, experts and many others simply following their own paths.  To them we are all grateful.  For a listing and bio’s of many of these great individuals, please see our Speakers Bio’s page HERE.

Orders may be placed by the individual missionary, Church employee or member of the military themselves, but it is also admissible for others, such as parents, family members, friends, local Church leadership, or others to purchase one copy of the book for a specific eligible person or persons.  The honor system will apply in those cases as it is not possible to ensure or verify that every book is being purchased by or will be received by an eligible recipient. We ask your help by not taking advantage of this offer dishonestly.  This is being partially funded through voluntary donation(s) to be used toward missionary work.

Again, our hope is to ‘arm’ all of our “warriors,” both in Missionary and Military Service, with answers to many Book of Mormon questions that they may find useful in their work.  The best way to do so is for parents to share this with their missionary sons or daughters prior to their mission so that they will be informed with answers to many difficult questions regarding the Book of Mormon. Church policy regarding missionaries is that they can officially use only authorized Church approved materials.  This book has not been approved or endorsed by the Church because the Church is officially neutral about Book of Mormon geography.

“Every serious student of the Book of Mormon should become familiar with the Jewish cultural research of Amberli Nelson, who has brought together one of the most unique, significant and essential, yet never before considered, pieces to the puzzle of Book of Mormon geography research.

“The findings of Amberli Nelson will forever alter the landscape of Book of Mormon geography theories as she imparts of her years of intensive research into an area of study never previously brought to bear on the subject of locating these lands.

Why has this critically important understanding – which was reiterated by the ancient prophets more than 30 times in the text and has been right before our eyes – been missed, ignored or overlooked by Book of Mormon scholars for so long?

Prepare yourself to be blown away!”  – Rod Meldrum

Jehovas Holy Days in the Heartland

Do you love learning new and previously undiscovered truths about the Book of Mormon?  You are invited to enjoy this highly insightful video presentation on DVD (available in the bookstore) which will take you on a fascinating journey where you will learn three striking truths about the Nephites of the Book of Mormon, truths that indisputably confirm that their enigmatic history played out in the Heartland of North America!  What are these truths?

Jehovah’s Holy Days in the Heartland

by Amberli Nelson

3 Essential Truths about Nephite Observance of the Law of Moses

First Truth:

The Nephites “strictly” kept the Law of Moses as indicated in 37 verses in the Book of Mormon, (see Alma 30:3, Mosiah 13:29-30,Jarom 1:5) and they did so with delight as it was seen by them as both symbolic of Christ and a means of coming unto Him. Occasionally even the Lamanites were known to “strictly” observe the law (Hel. 13:1).

Second Truth:

In “observing to keep the commandments of the Lord in all things, according to the Law of Moses” (2 Ne. 5:10) the Nephites would have necessarily observed all the feasts or “holy days” given to Moses by Jehovah. These are recorded in Exodus and Leviticus and are known as “holy convocations”. You will learn how beautifully these “rehearsals” typify the life and mission of Jesus Christ.

Third Truth:

It was absolutely essential for these Jewish Lehites to be brought to and given a land that would provide an abundance of all the plants and animals necessary to keep the Law of Moses, with its concomitant Holy Days or celebrated festivals.

A list of 10 essential items required by every Mosaic Law abiding people are revealed in this compelling presentation.  Some of those essential items include lambs, goats, wheat and barley.  These have never been found in the archaeological record of the Maya in Mesoamerica yet, in stark contrast, each has been verified in the archaeological record of the ancient Mound Builder civilization which flourished in the Heartland of North America during Book of Mormon time frames.  Based on the latest archeological findings of this civilization, it can now be irrefutably shown that the Heartland of North America is the only location in the Western Hemisphere where all 10 essential items have been confirmed. Thus, this covenant and Promised Land is the only one capable of sustaining and enabling a Jewish population, such as the Nephites, to observe and honor their sacred rites and religion without being forced to use unauthorized substitutions that would have been utterly offensive to God. Learn about the symbolic significance of each of these 10 critical items in this inspirational presentation.

A Prophetic Warning to Latter Day America

Because this evidence, in concert with other overwhelming evidences from genetics, prophecies, archaeology etc, profoundly establishes that the lands now occupied by the United States of America are the only possible lands of the Book of Mormon, you will then, of necessity, come face to face with one of the most important and timely messages of the Book of Mormon — the ominous warning to us, the modern day Gentiles, who inhabit this sacred and Promised Land today.  It is only in THIS nation that the ancient prophetic warnings can be reconciled with the history and resultant destruction of the Jaredites, then later the Nephites, and finally the latter-day Americans according to 36 Book of Mormon prophecies about ‘this nation’ (read about these prophecies HERE or download an excerpt of the book Prophecies and PromisesHERE or purchase the entire book in our bookstore).

How is that you ask? Because, according to what we read in the sacred record, all ancient inhabitants of this Promised Land were subject to what has been termed the “American Covenant*.” Its promised blessings are repeatedly spelled out in the Book of Mormon; namely the blessings of a land, posterity, liberty, prosperity and protection (see 1 Ne. 2:20, 2 Ne. 1:7 and article). Those precious blessings are predicated upon the earnest fulfillment of two requirements: first, that the inhabitants keep the Ten Commandments and second, that they serve the God of the land. We learn from a careful study of the Book of Mormon that the Nephites ultimate demise was precipitated by their prideful abrogation of these two requirements.

In light of that truth, the express purpose of this DVD presentation is to provide, based on the clear and compelling evidence presented, another witness that the Heartland of North America is the actual location of the Book of Mormon as that fact becomes the central truth upon which the rest of this, most important discussion hinges. For it is the author’s strong belief that it is a monumental mistake to unwittingly assign the Book of Mormon civilizations to Mesoamerica or anywhere other than the United States of America, as some modern day students of the Book of Mormon assert. Doing so obscures and effectively negates the understanding of which nation is being warned. The very lessons to be learned by the swift and utter destruction of both the Jaredites and the Nephites are revealed for the benefit of that specified nation.

One of the central and paramount themes of the book is its historic instructions – a literal “how-to manual” – on avoiding the shared fates of those two destroyed civilizations. To persist down the erroneous path of misplaced geography ultimately reduces the reason for their self-sown demise to little more than a curious, inexplicable and totally unjustified tragedy, since in no other place but the sacred and covenant land of North America has there been established an “American Covenant” for them to break or keep. It is a covenant that inextricably bound them to the promised blessings, when kept, and condemned them to the terrible fate they met when broken.

In short, without the “American Covenant”- which is exclusive to North America, there is no adequate explanation for the spectacular rise and subsequent fall of those two civilizations or that of the United States of America in modern times. That fact, by extension, provides the necessary framework for a modern day understanding that we too, as citizens of this, the Promised Land, are under the selfsame obligations they were… Obligations which, if kept, will either secure divine protection from our Creator or provoke His divine wrath unto our utter destruction. It is a very timely and urgent warning about our near future that we ignore at our own peril!

A Covenant Land for a Covenant People, Providing All Essential Needs For Observance of the Law

Lastly, we must ask the question,

Would God have lead his covenant people to a Promised Land devoid of every essential animal and plant required by Him to obey his commandment to live the Law of Moses?

To place God’s chosen and covenant people anywhere but upon the covenant lands now occupied by the United States of America would have deprived these ancient civilizations of nearly every item required by the Lord in order for them to keep the Law of Moses.  To do so would not only bring the veracity of the sacred text itself into question, but it would undermine the credibility of Joseph Smith as its translator if the setting would not support compliance to the law. Furthermore it would cast a disparaging light & considerable doubt on the prescient premise embraced by the faithful Nephites who delighted in the knowing that the “law of Moses was a type of his coming”….”believing that they must keep those outward performances until the time that He should be revealed unto them.” For the “law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; and thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation,” (Alma 25:15-16).

Therefore, the time has come to acknowledge the righteous Nephites for their astoundingly unique and singular ability to fuse the principles and laws of Judaism with the doctrines and saving ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ, creating one seamless theological bridge between the two. This is an astonishing feat that had never been accomplished before that time or since, effectively making The Book of Mormon the only known text ever written that is neither exclusively Jewish nor Christian, but simultaneously both at the same time. This then gifts its readers with an insightful glimpse into the Jewishness of Jesus Himself and the Holy Days of Judaism which He authored, thereby providing precious perspective for us as Christians who long to know Him more fully and intimately as we strive with a brightness of hope toward the penultimate blessing of walking with Him through His millennial reign.

Amberli Nelson received a B.S. in sociology from Brigham Young University. A busy wife and mother of seven, Amberli has a deep and abiding love of truth, knowledge and greater understanding and therefore she thoroughly enjoys reading about and researching subjects she is most passionate about which include: sacred symbology, The Book of Mormon, early LDS church history, and Jewish religious customs, beliefs and traditions. She has become an expert on ancient Jewish practices, especially those involving the Laws of Moses.  She delights in sharing this knowledge with others and does so with energy and enthusiasm.

Amberli has discovered compelling new evidence that the ancient Hopewell Mound Builders may have been living the laws of Moses based on archaeological findings of the essential materials required for obedience to those laws.  Her incredibly powerful new presentation was a tremendous hit at our Spring 2012 National Conference and she has some incredible new information to share.  Her presentation is titled – Connections Between Jewish Family, Cultural and Religious Practises and Those of  the Ancient Hopewell Civilization.

Exploring the Book of Mormon in Americas Heartland

For years the single most requested educational item for the Heartland Model geography, to learn more about and share this research, has been a large format, high-quality picture book.  Finally, author Rod L. Meldrum has created a 200+ page heirloom quality photographic journey of discovery into the exciting new “Heartland Model” geography!  It is titled Exploring The Book of Mormon In America’s Heartland – A Visual Journey of Discovery. Over 30,000 copies sold!

Over 500 stunningly beautiful photographs combine with quotes, stories, charts, commentary, maps and scripture to introduce the reader to the rapidly mounting body of evidence that presents the very real possibility that the Book of Mormon history occurred in the Heartland of North America.

Exploring the BoM in America's Heartland pages

From Adam-ondi-Ahman to the restoration of the Gospel, to the building of the New Jerusalem in the latter-days—the Heartland” of America has been the setting of sacred and significant events throughout human history. This photographic book introduces the growing body of evidence that suggests the very real possibility of a North American setting for The Book of Mormon.

Thirty-six scriptural prophecies and promises alternate between descriptions of the ancient Nephite land and a latter-day “Promised Land.” Following that premise, readers will carefully examine statements by the Prophet Joseph Smith regarding his views on Book of Mormon geography.

Newly emerging scientific information strengthens the assertion that large agrarian societies once flourished in North America at precisely the times of the Jaredite and Nephite cultures. This research, conducted primarily by non-LDS scientists, is revealing a remarkable panorama of culture, achievement and destruction among these ancient peoples.

The research here compiled spans the scope of archaeology, anthropology, architecture, fortifications, trade, religion, metallurgy, DNA, horticulture, transportation–by sea and by land, geographic typologies, building materials, astronomical alignments, mythology and much more.

This visually compelling new book has a suggested retail of $39.95. Compare with other books of similar quality at $45-$60.  To purchase, go to the BOOKSTORE or visit Deseret Book and Seagull Bookstores everywhere, or Costco stores in Utah, Idaho, and Arizona. Also available on Amazon.com and other retail book outlets online.

 Endorsements:

“I believe the United States of America is the location of the ‘Land of Promise’ spoken of in the Book of Mormon. There is much left to be discovered with respect to its ancient inhabitants—who they were and where they got their knowledge of metallurgy, agriculture and written languages. This book presents crucial information which has been suppressed for centuries and should be read by all who inhabit this sacred ‘Promised Land’ today.”

“I’ve personally explored the research, seen the evidence, discovered the correlations, and endorse the findings!”

“This book opens up a whole new field for inquiry, investigation and discovery . . .my sense is that the better we understand the context of the Land of Promise the more prepared we will be . . .

“ . . . a great gift to introduce others to this fascinating research, which will reinvigorate your study of the Book of Mormon.”

David N. Wright, DND

“Suzanne and I are so blessed and excited to have personally visited, experienced, witnessed and felt the evidence and artifacts at the various locations shown in this marvelous book.  Not only does the DNA, ancient languages and archaeology all line up, but it makes logical and spiritual sense, confirming that the ancient prophecies of The Book of Mormon are true.  As Elder L. Tom Perry wrote in the Dec. 2012 Ensign, ‘The United States is the Promised Land foretold in the Book of Mormon‘ and this book explores those evidences from America’s Heartland.  It will change your lives and expose truths that even ‘conspiring men’ could not hide or destroy.”

“THIS IS A TERRIFIC BOOK !

As the writer and director of THE TESTAMENTS, the epic Book of Mormon film produced by the LDS Church, I should be among those with strong vested interests in clinging to the popular notion that the lands of the Book of Mormon were in Central America.  Nobody likes ancient stone pyramids, jaguar cults and a jungle setting more than me.  That said: Having read Prophecies and Promises by Bruce Porter and Rod Meldrum, and Exploring the Book of Mormon in America’s Heartland, I have  to say, ‘I created the biggest, most expensive movie the Church ever made and I think I made it in the wrong place.

I encourage everyone to explore this marvelous book with an open mind.  When I began work on the Testaments, President James E Faust put his hands on my shoulders, looked me in the eye and said, Kieth, ‘we do not know with certainty where these things took place.

Where the events recorded in the Book of Mormon took place is not the basis of my testimony. I know it is of divine origin for many other reasons, but the revelations of this research have significantly changed my previous assumptions, added insights, opened possibilities and excited me in remarkable ways.”

 Book History

Exploring the Book of Mormon in America’s Heartland – A visual Journey of Discovery book project was originally started by Tonya Meldrum, wife of Rod Meldrum in an effort to help Rod make available the most requested item by fellow Heartlanders over the years. She initiated the book, got it pretty far along, and then encouraged Rod to jump in, which he did.  Overall the project took some 8-9 months to collect and organize the photos, write the text, lay out the pages, go through the review and editing stages and make ready for print.

The Review Process:

The book was reviewed and edited by over 20 individuals who were tasked with review for content, clarity, and gospel and Church history correctness (including reviews by 5 emeritus General Authorities), then reviewed for ease of reading and learning dynamics, then for sentence structure and composition, spelling and grammar, and finally a triple check of all references.  It was a long but very important process, resulting in nearly no changes required in what is now three four five, SIX printings totaling 30,000 copies!  We want to express our thanks to all who contributed their time, energy and talents to ensuring this book is well written and accurate!

WITNESSES OF BOOK OF MORMON

WHY PLATES WERE RETURNED TO MORONI. The question has been asked many times of our elders: Where are the plates? Does the Church have in its possession the plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith?

When the answer is given that the plates were received again by the Angel Moroni, who  through the centuries since they were hid up unto the Lord has been their special guardian,  the reply is generally made: What a wonderful aid it would be to your people in convincing  the world of the truth of your story if you could show the plates to prove that Joseph Smith  really had them.

Perhaps it is natural for a man who hears for the first time the story of Joseph Smith and the  coming forth of the Book of Mormon to propound such a question and to think that the  plates, if they had been placed in some museum where the public could examine them,  would have added much to prove the authenticity of the Prophet’s story. With deeper reflection we discover that this would not have been the case, for it is not the way the Lord proves his truth, now or at any other time. However, in surprise, and in some cases with an incredulous smile, the propounder of this question turns away feeling that such an answer as he has received is an admission that Joseph Smith never had the plates and practiced a fraud upon the public.

EXISTENCE OF PLATES WOULD NOT PROVE DIVINITY OF BOOK. It is well in considering this matter to remember the words of the Lord to Isaiah: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” 228. 1

If the Lord had followed the thoughts of men and had commanded Joseph Smith to place the plates in some repository where they could have been inspected by the curious public, it would have led to endless disputations. Enemies of the Church would not have been convinced and would have contended most bitterly that the plates were spurious. No one could have read them for the characters engraved on them are unknown to the savants of the present age.

The Lord does not convince men of his truth by placing before their eyes and in their hands tangible evidence, as a lawyer may do before the court, marking it exhibit A and exhibit B, and then expect it to be accepted. The Lord expects the searcher after truth to approach him with a contrite spirit and with sincerity of purpose; if he will do this and keep the commandments of the Lord, he shall receive the witness through the Holy Spirit and shall know the truth. This testimony will come with such force and clearness that it cannot be denied. For this reason, the Lord said, “Whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” 228. 2

WITNESSES OF BOOK OF MORMON TO BE RAISED UP. Nephi, one of the earliest prophets of the Israelitish colony, predicted nearly 600 years before the Christian era, that when the records containing the history of his people should be revealed from the dust, it would be in a day when the people would “deny the power of God, the Holy One of Israel,” and they would say: “Hearken unto us, and hear ye our precept; for behold there is no God today, for the Lord and the Redeemer hath done his work, and he hath given his power unto men.” 229. 3 Again, many among them would say when presented with a new volume of scripture containing the history of the people of this western world: “A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible.” 229. 4

Because of this attitude towards this new record the Lord promised to raise up “as many witnesses as seemeth him good,” to “establish his word; and wo be unto him that rejecteth the word of God.” In that day when these things should be accomplished the Lord would proceed to do a marvelous work and a wonder which would prove to be a testimony against those who “seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord. “229. 5

Moreover, this new volume of scripture was to be a witness, not only for Christ and to contain the everlasting gospel but was also to be a witness for the Jewish scriptures, the Bible; and these two records — according to the prophesying of Nephi, his father, and also Joseph, son of Israel — were to grow together bearing testimony of the everlasting gospel. 229.6 As such a witness these records stand today testifying of the truth to the condemnation of all who reject their teachings. 229. 7

THE THREE WITNESSES. The three men called to serve as special witnesses of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon by the power of God are Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris… They were associated with Joseph Smith in the establishing of this marvelous work in this dispensation. Later all three witnesses became estranged and left the Church. 229. 8 Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris came back humbly seeking membership in the Church and both died in full fellowship. David Whitmer remained out of the Church; however, all three of these men remained faithful to the testimony they gave to the world which is found in each copy of the Book of Mormon.

Their testimony is that they received a visitation of an angel from the presence of the Lord, who laid before them the golden record from whence the Book of Mormon was translated, and who also instructed them. They beheld the engravings upon the plates as the leaves were turned one by one before them, and the voice of God was heard by them declaring from the heavens that the translation was by the gift and power of God and commanding them to bear record of it to all the world.230. 9 These three witnesses, through adversity, persecution, and all the vicissitudes of life, always remained true to their testimony that they beheld the plates in the presence of an angel and heard the voice of God speaking to them from the heavens.

TOTAL OF TWELVE WITNESSES. There were eight other witnesses who also beheld the plates, handled them, and examined carefully the engravings upon them as they were shown them by Joseph Smith. Their testimony is also given to the world and appears in each issue of the Book of Mormon. All of these eight men remained true to this testimony until death.

These twelve witnesses, four of whom beheld angels and had heavenly visions, and eight who beheld the record as it was shown to them by Joseph Smith, are all, it appears, that the Lord deemed necessary to establish the truth of the Book of Mormon, as he promised through Nephi that he would do. “And wo be unto him that rejecteth the word of God!”  230. 10 The testimonies of these men more than satisfy the law.230. 1 1

ALL MEN MAY BECOME BOOK OF MORMON WITNESSES. These are not all the witnesses who can speak of the divine mission of Joseph Smith, or of the truth of the Book of Mormon. The promise is made in the Book of Mormon that all who desire to know whether it is true and contains the word of the Lord may know that it is true if they will ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, for he will reveal it to them by the power of the Holy Ghost. 231. 12 There are hundreds of thousands who have put this promise to the test and can in all sincerity say that they have received that knowledge.231. 13

I am just as firmly convinced that this Book of Mormon is the word of God and was revealed, as Joseph Smith declared it was revealed, as I am that I stand here looking into your faces. Every soul on the face of the earth who has intelligence enough to understand may know that truth. How can he know it? All he has to do is to follow the formula that was given by the Lord himself when he declared to the Jews that they who would do the will of his Father should know of the doctrine, whether it was of God or whether he spoke of himself. 231. 14 My witness to all the world is that this book is true. I have read it many, many times. I have not read it enough. It still contains truths that I still may seek and find, for I have not mastered it, but I know it is true.

I know that the testimony of these witnesses recorded in each copy of the Book of Mormon is true, that they stood in the presence of an angel of God who declared unto them that the record as it was translated was correct, that their testimony that God spoke to them from the heavens calling upon them to bear witness of that fact is true, and there is not a soul who cannot receive that testimony if he desires to receive it. By reading this book prayerfully and faithfully, with a desire to know the truth as Moroni has declared by revelation, he shall know the truth regarding the restoration of this scripture given to the ancient inhabitants of this continent. 232. 15

WHERE IS THE HILL CUMORAH?

SPECULATION ABOUT BOOK OF MORMON GEOGRAPHY. Within recent years there has arisen among certain students of the Book of Mormon a theory to the effect that within the period covered by the Book of Mormon, the Nephites and Lamanites were confined almost entirely within the borders of the territory comprising Central America and the southern portion of Mexico — the isthmus of Tehauntepec probably being the “narrow neck” of land spoken of in the Book of Mormon rather than the isthmus of Panama.232. 16

This theory is founded upon the assumption that it was impossible for the colony of Lehi’s to multiply and fill the hemisphere within the limits of 1 ,000 years, or from the coming of Lehi from Jerusalem to the time of the destruction of the Nephites at the Hill Cumorah. Moreover, they claim that the story in the Book of Mormon of the migrations, building of cities, and the wars and contentions, preclude the possibility of the people spreading over great distances such as we find within the borders Of North and South America.

EARTH POPULATED RAPIDLY. If we are willing to accept the Bible record, which is confirmed by the Doctrine and Covenants, the entire civilization of the earth was destroyed in the flood except Noah and his family.232. 17 Moreover, this destruction took place less than 5,000 years ago, and today the population of the earth, notwithstanding wars and destructions, is estimated at over 2,000,000,000 souls.

The population of Europe, based upon the best records available, is vastly increased over that at the time of the discovery of America; yet upon this hemisphere are to be found hundreds of millions of people, descendants of European and Asiatic ancestors who knew nothing of this land before the discovery by Columbus. The rapid increase of posterity is known to every genealogist who has traced the record of the early settlers in this western country.

LOCALE OF CUMORAH, RAMAH, AND RIPLIANCUM. This modernistic theory of necessity, in order to be consistent, must place the waters of Ripliancum and the Hill Cumorah some place within the restricted territory of Central America, notwithstanding the teachings of the Church to the contrary for upwards of 100 years. Because of this theory some members of the Church have become confused and greatly disturbed in their faith in the Book of Mormon. It is for this reason that evidence is here presented to show that it is not only possible that these places could be located as the Church has held during the past century, but that in very deed such is the case.

It is known that the Hill Cumorah where the Nephites were destroyed is the hill where the Jaredites were also destroyed. This hill was known to the Jaredites as Ramah. It was approximately near to the waters of Ripliancum, which the Book of Ether says, “by interpretation, is large, or to exceed all.”233. 18 Mormon adds: “And it came to pass that we did march forth to the land of Cumorah, and we did pitch our tents round about the hill Cumorah; and it was in a land of many waters, rivers, and fountains; and here we had hope to gain advantage over the Lamanites.” 233. 19

EARLY BRETHREN LOCATE CUMORAH IN WESTERN NEW YORK. It must be conceded that this description fits perfectly the land of Cumorah in New York, as it has been known since the visitation of Moroni to the Prophet Joseph Smith, for the hill is in the proximity of the Great Lakes and also in the land of many rivers and fountains. Moreover, the Prophet Joseph Smith himself is on record, definitely declaring the present hill called Cumorah to be the exact hill spoken of in the Book of Mormon. 234. 20

Further, the fact that all of his associates from the beginning down have spoken of it as the identical hill where Mormon and Moroni hid the records, must carry some weight. It is difficult for a reasonable person to believe that such men as Oliver Cowdery, Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, David Whitmer, and many others, could speak frequently of the Spot where the Prophet Joseph Smith obtained the plates as the Hill Cumorah, and not be corrected by the Prophet, if that were not the fact. That they did speak of this hill in the days of the Prophet in this definite manner is an established record of history.

OLIVER COWDERY PLACES CUMORAH IN WESTERN NEW YORK. The first reference of this kind is found in the Messenger and Advocate, a paper published by the Church in 1834-5. In a brief history of the rise of the Church prepared by Oliver Cowdery, he makes reference to this particular spot in the following words:

“By turning to the 529th and 530th pages of the Book of Mormon you will read Mormon’s account of the last great struggle as they were encamped round this hill Cumorah. 234. 21 In this valley fell the remaining strength and pride of a once powerful people, the Nephites — once so highly favored of the Lord, but at that time in darkness, doomed to suffer extermination by the hand of their barbarous and uncivilized brethren. From the top of this hill, Mormon, with a few others, after the battle, gazed with horror upon the mangled remains of those who, the day before, were filled with anxiety, hope, or doubt. A few had fled to the south, who were hunted down by the victorious party, and all who would not deny the Savior and his religion, were put to death. Mormon himself, according to the record of his son Moroni, was also slain.

“But a long time previous to this national disaster it appears, from his own account, he foresaw approaching destruction. In fact, if he perused the records of his fathers, which were in his possession, he could have learned that such would be the case. Alma, who lived before the coming of the Messiah, prophesied this. He, however, by divine appointment, abridged from those records, in his own style and language, a short account of the more important and prominent items, from the days of Lehi to his own time, after which he deposited, as he says,  on the 529th page, 235. 22 all the records in this same hill, Cumorah, and after gave his small record to his son Moroni, who, as appears from the same, finished, after witnessing the extinction of his people as a nation. . . .

HILL RAMAH IN WESTERN NEW YORK. “This hill, by the Jaredites, was called Ramah; by it, or around it, pitched the famous army of Coriantumr their tents. Coriantumr was the last king of the Jaredites. The opposing army were to the west, and in this same valley, and nearby, from day to day, did that mighty race spill their blood, in wrath, contending, as it were brother against brother, and father against son. In this same spot, in full view from the top of this same hill, one may gaze with astonishment upon the ground which was twice covered with the dead and dying of our fellowmen. . . .

“In this vale lie commingled, in one mass of ruin, the ashes of thousands, and in this vale was destined to consume the fair forms and vigorous systems of tens of thousands of the human race — blood mixed with blood, flesh with flesh, bones with bones, and dust with dust.” 236. 23

PROPHET APPROVES OLIVER COWDERY’S VIEWS. The quibbler might say that this statement from Oliver Cowdery is merely the opinion of Oliver Cowdery and not the expression of the Prophet Joseph Smith. It should be remembered that these letters in which these statements are made were written at the Prophet’s request and under his personal supervision. Surely, under these circumstances, he would not have permitted an error of this kind to creep into the record without correction.

At the commencement of these historical letters is found the following: “That our narrative may be correct, and particularly the introduction, it is proper to inform our patrons, that our Brother J. Smith Jr., has offered to assist us. Indeed, there are many items connected with the fore part of this subject that render his labor indispensable. With his labor and with authentic documents now in our possession, we hope to render this a pleasing and agreeable narrative, well worth the examination and perusal of the saints. “236. 24

Later, during the Nauvoo period of the Church, and again under the direction of the Prophet Joseph Smith, these same letters by Oliver Cowdery, were published in the Times and Seasons, without any thought of correction had this description of the Hill Cumorah been an error. 236. 25

TESTIMONY OF DAVID WHITMER TO HILL CUMORAH. Another testimony of interest is that of David Whitmer given to Elders Orson Pratt and Joseph F. Smith in September 1878, when they paid him a visit at his home in Richmond. To these brethren he said: “When I was returning to Fayette, with Joseph and Oliver, all of us riding in the wagon. Oliver and I on an old- fashioned wooden spring seat and Joseph behind us — while traveling along in a clear open space, a very pleasant, nice-looking old man suddenly appeared by the side of our wagon and saluted us with, ‘Good morning, it is very warm,’ at the same time wiping his face or forehead with his hand. We returned the salutation, and, by a sign from Joseph, I invited him to ride if he was going our way; but he said very pleasantly, ‘No, I am going to Cumorah.’ This name was something new to me; I did not know what Cumorah meant. We all gazed at him and at each other, and as 1 looked around inquiringly of Joseph, the old man instantly disappeared, so that I did not see him again.”

Joseph F. Smith asked: “Did you notice his appearance?”

David Whitmer: “I should think I did. He was, I should think, about five feet eight or nine inches tall and heavy set. . . . His hair and beard were white, like Brother Pratt’s, but his beard was not so heavy. I also remember that he had on his back a sort of knapsack with something in, shaped like a book. “237. 26

“GLAD TIDINGS FROM CUMORAH.” Who can read the words of Joseph Smith as recorded in section 128 of the Doctrine and Covenants and not feel that he had reference to the Hill Cumorah in western New York?

“And again, what do we hear? Glad tidings from Cumorah! Moroni, an angel from heaven, declaring the fulfilment of the prophets — the book to be revealed. A voice of the Lord in the wilderness of Fayette, Seneca county, declaring the three witnesses to bear record of the book!” 237. 27

While in this statement it is not positively declared that the Hill Cumorah is the place where the plates were obtained, yet the implication that such is the case is overwhelming. Moroni declaring from Cumorah the book to be revealed!

JOSEPH SMITH LOCATES CUMORAH IN WESTERN NEW YORK. Perhaps this matter could rest at this point, but the question of the territory now embraced within the United States having been in possession of Nephites and Lamanites before the death of Mormon, carries some weight in the determining of this matter. In the tight of revelation, it is absurd for anyone to maintain that the Nephites and Lamanites did not possess this northern land. While Zion’s camp was marching on the way to Jackson County, near the bank of the Illinois River they came to a mound containing the skeleton of a man. The history of this incident is as follows:

“The brethren procured a shovel and a hoe and removing the earth to the depth of about one foot, discovered the skeleton of a man, almost entire, and between his ribs the stone point of a Lamanitish arrow, which evidently produced his death. Elder Burr Riggs retained the arrow. The contemplation of the scenery around us produced peculiar sensations in our bosoms; and subsequently the visions of the past being opened to my understanding by the Spirit of the Almighty, I discovered that the person whose skeleton was before us was a white Lamanite, a large, thickset man, and a man of God. His name was Zelph. He was a warrior and chieftain under the great prophet Onandagus, who was known from the Hill Cumorah, or eastern sea to the Rocky Mountains. The curse was taken from Zelph, or at least, in part — one of his thigh bones was broken by a stone flung from a sling, while in battle, years before his death. He was killed in battle by the arrow found among his ribs, during the last great struggle of the Lamanites and Nephites.” 238. 28

HEBER C. KIMBALL TELLS OL DEATH OE ZELPH. Elder Heber C. Kimball who was present recorded the following in his journal: “While on our way we felt anxious to know who the person was who had been killed by that arrow. It was made known to Joseph that he had been an officer who fell in battle, in the last destruction among the Lamanites, and his name was Zelph. This caused us to rejoice much, to think that God was so mindful of us as to show these things to his servant. Brother Joseph had inquired of the Lord, and it was made known in a vision.” 239. 29

ANCIENT CITY OF MANTI IN MISSOURI. The following is also taken from the history of the travels of the Kirtland Camp: “The camp passed through Huntsville, in Randolph County, which has been appointed as one of the stakes of Zion and is the ancient site of the City of Manti, and pitched tents at Dark Creek, Salt Licks, seventeen miles. It was reported to the camp that one hundred and ten men had volunteered from Randolph and gone to Far West to settle difficulties.” 239. 30

The following account of the same event is taken from the daily journal of the Kirtland Camp, and was written by Samuel D. Tyler: “September 25, 1838. We passed through Huntsville, Co. seat of Randolph Co, Pop. 450, and three miles further we bought 32 bu. of corn off one of the brethren who resides in this place. There are several of the brethren round about here and this is the ancient site of the City of Manti, which is spoken of in the Book of Mormon and this is appointed one of the Stakes of Zion, and it is in Randolph County, Missouri, three miles west of the county seat.” 239. 3 1

NEPHITE AND JAREDITE WARS IN WESTERN NEW YORK. In the face of this evidence coming from the Prophet Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery, and David Whitmer, we cannot say that the Nephites and Lamanites did not possess the territory of the United States and that the Hill Cumorah is in Central America. Neither can we say that the great struggle which resulted in the destruction of the Nephites took place in Central America. If Zelph, a righteous man, was fighting under a great prophet-general in the last battles between the Nephites and Lamanites; if that great prophet-general was known from the Rocky Mountains to “the Hill Cumorah or eastern sea,” then some of those battles, and evidently the final battles did take place within the borders of what is now the United States.

There were no righteous prophets, save the Three Nephites, after the death of Moroni, and we learn that Zelph was slain during one of these battles during the great last struggle between the Nephites and Lamanites and was buried near the Illinois River.

In the Book of Mormon story the Lamanites were constantly crowding the Nephites back towards the north and east. If the battles in which Zelph took part were fought in the country traversed by the Zion’s Camp, then we have every reason to believe from what is written in the Book of Mormon, that the Nephites were forced farther and farther to the north and east until they found themselves in the land of Ripliancum, which both Ether and Mormon declare to us was the land of Ramah or Cumorah, a land of “many waters,” which “by interpretation, is large, or to exceed all. “240. 32

This being true, what would be more natural then that Moroni, like his father Mormon, would deposit the plates in the land where the battles came to an end and the Nephites were destroyed? This Moroni says he did, and from all the evidence in the Book of Mormon, augmented by the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith, these final battles took place in the territory known as the United States and in the neighborhood of the Great

Lakes and hills of Western New York. And here Moroni found the resting place for the sacred instruments which had been committed to his care. 241. 33

IMPRESSIONS AT CUMORAH

LORD LED PROPHET’S LAMILY TO CUMORAH-LAND. As I stood upon these sacred places I had peculiar feelings which I cannot describe. I always do have such feelings; I have visited the Hill Cumorah and the Sacred Grove on other occasions. As I stood at the Smith home, I thought of the early struggles of the family, and wondered what means the Lord might have used to get them to move from Vermont or New Hampshire, if they had not been forced from these states by poverty. Their poverty was not the result of indolence, as the wicked have proclaimed, but the poverty and reverses of Providence, sent to give experience and to lead the family to a better land where the Lord could perform his work through the youthful Seer, yet to be raised up.

When the Smith family arrived in Palmyra they immediately bargained for the purchase of 100 acres of land. This is known today as the Joseph Smith farm and is in the possession of the Church. In that day the land was covered with a heavy growth of timber. This had to be removed before the land could be planted and crops raised to pay for the farm. As I stood upon this ground, I thought of the struggles this entailed. My grandfather, Hyrum Smith, and his older brother, Alvin, were called upon to do much of this laborious task. The younger brother, Joseph, was too young at that time to give much help, being only about 10 years of age. Nevertheless, he was called to assist, and a few years later — at the time of the vision — was under the necessity of performing labor required of a man.

The house which stands upon the farm was built by these sons of Joseph Smith, Senior; but it is not the house, as many have been told, in which the Angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith. The older house has long since disappeared and stood several rods to the north of the present home. After the proclamation of the Angel’s visit persecution raged, and the family were not permitted long to enjoy the land which had cost them so much to prepare, because of others, who, through wickedness, for a season reaped the fruits thereof.

CUMORAH ONCE SITE OF CARNAGE AND DESTRUCTION. As I stood upon the summit of the Hill Cumorah, in the midst of a vast multitude, only a few of whom belonged to the Church, I tried to picture the scenes of former days. Here were assembled vast armies filled with bitterness and bent on destruction. I thought of the great promises the Lord had made through his prophets concerning those who should possess this choice land, and how those promises were not fulfilled because the people violated his commandments. Here a people perished because of their extreme wickedness.

There must be something in the destiny of things that would cause a repetition of this terrible scene on the same spot many centuries later. I reflected and wondered if this unhappy time would ever come when another still mightier people would incur the wrath of God because of wickedness and likewise perish. If so, would this same spot witness their destruction? I thought of the prophets, Ether, Mormon, Moroni, and tried to realize the sadness of their feelings as they witnessed the mad onrushing of their peoples to annihilation.

IMPORTANCE OF CUMORAH UNKNOWN TO WORLD. We sang the song, prepared for this celebration, 242 . 34 Zion-land, and I entered heartily, sincerely, into the spirit of the song:

God bless our Zion-land,
Firm may she ever stand,
Through storm and night;
When the wild tempests rave,
Ruler of wind and wave,
Do Thou Thy Zion save
By thy great might!
For her our prayers shall rise
To God above the skies,
With Him we stand;
Thou who art ever nigh,
Guarding with watchful eye,
To Thee aloud we cry,
God save Thy land.

Here it was that Moroni, commanded by the Lord, hid up the sacred records of his people. Here it was. 1,400 years later, that he, then a resurrected being, came to Joseph Smith and committed these same records to the young man’s care. At the time of the Prophet’s first visit to the hill, it was covered with trees; today (1923) it is stripped and bare, save for the grass which grows abundantly. This former scene of strife and bloodshed, where two nations perished, later the sacred repository of ancient records, today is the abode of peaceful cattle, reclining and chewing the cud. The many millions of inhabitants of the land, who, because they love darkness rather than light, will not believe, and although an angel has declared it unto them, they appear to have no more thought concerning the wonderful events that have taken place near and on the Hill Cumorah, than have these cattle.243. 35

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Visit of SENSYS Representatives from Berlin, Germany to Glenford, Ohio July 15th to July 19th, 2018

Sunday, July 15th, 2018

SENSYS German Representatives arrive from Berlin, Germany to Columbus, Ohio.

Monday, July 16th, 2018 10:00 a.m.

Assembly and Testing SENSYS German Representatives pick up the MAGNETO MXV3 System, transport it to the Dennis DeRolph farm for assembly, calibration, and testing. This technology is a non-intrusive high-speed magnetometer surveying system which is capable of reaching a depth of four feet below the terrain surface. The potential for this technology is to survey unprecedented large areas of terrain and therefore discover archaeological features which have never been known to exist. These discoveries have the potential of expanding our understanding of prehistoric peoples in Ohio. There is also the possibly of finding evidence of contact between pre-Columbian Native Americans and cultures from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.

First Demonstration of Capability for Technology in Glenford Ohio

This place was selected because of its close proximity to a known Hopewell village site as well as the topographic nature of the landscape and the presence of artifacts. It is estimated there is a probability of finding sub-surface features consistent with the Hopewell inhabitants of the area. The site is located near Jonathan Creek, the most important waterway in the entire valley. This site is also near the Yost Earthworks which are carefully constructed geometric monuments which are aligned to the yearly solar standstills and the 18.6-year lunar standstill cycle. These earthworks were constructed by the Hopewell people living in a long-term site. This regional landscape is within  miles of Flint Ridge, the most important source for flint in the Eastern United States. Flint was the chosen material for the production of tools necessary to sustain all pre-historic life ways. The expectation for this site is to image evidence of long term habitation such as fire pits, postholes of dwellings, storage pits, and possibly linear features consistent with geometric features constructed by the local Hopewell culture.

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018 10:00 a.m.
Near Thronville, Ohio

In 1914 William Mills published an important document of pre-historic cultural features called The Archaeological Atlas of Ohio. Mills documented more than 5,300 sites in the 88 Counties of the State of Ohio. This 12-acre site was selected for demonstration because Mills Atlas indicates the presence of an earthen circle and square in the area. The geometric circle, square, a linear earthwork are the primary hallmarks of the Hopewell culture. Therefore, it is estimated there is a good probability of finding evidence of the geometric features which would be the first time the precise locations of these features are confirmed.

Review and discussion of the Heartland Research Group
Glenford Community Center
125 High Street, Glenford, Ohio

In this meeting participants will be able to review the results of the archaeological surveys and to discuss future plans. The review begins with an interpretation of the magnetometer survey results and its importance to the archaeological record of the area. The discussions then focus on the logistics involved with moving the project forward including its goals and expectations. The possibility of a third site demonstration will be discussed. This third demonstration would be in the November/December time frame inside the stone walls of the Fort Glenford Hilltop Enclosure. This site has an estimated vey good probability of producing results never recorded before.

Applied German Technology with Book of Mormon Research
Prepared by John Lefgren, PhD
04/30/2018

“There is a new technology which uses the differential of magnetic forces to identify ancient features under the surface of the earth. The impact of this new technology on archeology is comparable to the impact which MRI technology has had on the practice of modern medicine.

SENSYS, a German Company located outside Berlin, is the world’s leading provider of magnetic and electromagnetic ground survey systems and components for archaeological research. Representatives of this company have agreed to come to America  to demonstrate the operation and effectiveness of their equipment on Nephite sites in Central Ohio. The Germans will be here in Ohio from July 16th to July 19th. Their technology will identify ancient activity in the ground under the fields and forests of Ohio.

The German machine creates about 30 data points in a space of 4″ x 4″. Each data point has GPS coordinates with an accuracy of +/- 1/4″. The machine can survey about 10 acres per hour which means that the readings are flowing at about 10. x 10^7 (100,000,000) per hour. A trained person can collect per day more than a half billion unique points of data. With this machine it is possible to consider a detailed survey of what is in the ground for hundreds of sites and for thousands of acres.

The amount of information is more than anyone could have imagined ten years ago. Fortunately, with modern-day software, it is possible to create digital images which will identify many kinds of human activity which are from 3 feet to 5 feet under the surface and which occurred at the time of Christ. It is amazing that by measuring the magnetic differences caused from the heat of a campfire the technology can identify within +/- 1/4″ accuracy the location of a pit which Lamanites dug when they were moving against Nephite settlements. That same level of detail can be applied to thousands of acres.

The fact that the technology can collect and handle this kind of data flow is remarkable. With these new methods it is possible to see the fulfillment of prophecies when God anciently promised that “Truth shall spring out of the earth” (Psalms 85:11), and that the proof of the Book of Mormon will be, “Yea, as one speaking out of the dust” (Moroni 10:27). It is so exciting to be a part of this. Believers are invited to participate. They should expect to see in this the Hand of God.

Research Hypothesis and Application of New Technology

The hypothesis for the research is taken from the Book of Mormon and is divided into three parts.

(1) The Nephites had hundreds of multi-generational settlements and fortifications on the Till Plains and the Erie Plains of Central Ohio during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Centuries. About 50% of this land is covered with crops. The new technology can easily be applied to these large landscapes during the off seasons.
(2) In the 4th Century the Nephites were in conflict. They migrated northward along the Portage Escarpment and St Lawrence Divide as well as other routes from Central Ohio to Western New York. Some Nephites moved on the Ohio River into the headwaters of the Allegheny River, crossed the high plateau and went into the lowlands of the Great Lakes.
(3) Most of the Nephite settlements and fortifications in Western New York were built in a single generation in the mid and late 4th Century among the world’s largest drumlin fields. There is a thin archaeological layer which is associated with the last great conflict between the Lamanites and Nephites.

By the 4th Century the Nephite culture and its earthwork construction in the river valleys of Ohio had stopped. Archaeological evidence suggests that in the 4th Century these people migrated from Ohio to Western New York.

Conflict results in the displacement of people. Indeed, much of the movement of people in the ancient as well as the modern world is the result of conflict. The proposed research would examine movements and encampments of the Nephites who migrated from Ohio to Western New York during the late 4th Century. The proposed research will develop historic themes which are associated with the dislocation and displacement of people from one region to another. The research will review the accounts from the first Europeans concerning fortifications and artifacts of war for the ancient people who were in Western New York a thousand years before Columbus. The research will examine ancient sites in Western New York where archaeological artifacts are found from the rich agricultural lands of the Mississippi valleys.

The research will study various aspects of ancient life in these sites and their particular ‘wilderness’ settings, framing the discussion within the themes of movements and dislocations, and especially their multiple impacts on those Nephites who came to a land removed from their origins. A particular emphasis for the research will be movements and dislocations. The Nephites became in effect ‘stuck’ in the northeastern wilderness. They were in conflict and they coped with the situation as well as they could. The conflict will be reflected in the different features of the sites and the archaeological material which the fieldwork will produce. The research will focus on how conflict pushed the Nephites from one region to another. The research will compare the multi-generational construction of large and numerous earthworks in Central Ohio to the immediate construction of hundreds of fortifications and small villages in Western New York.

Considering the displacement of people in our time, the research will note how conflicts have pushed hundreds of millions of people from one region to another in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent and Asia. In this context the research will examine how in the ancient world one conflict pushed one people from the Heartland of America into the northeastern lands of Western New York.

To formulate an explanation for the decline of the Nephite culture the research will examine the 4th Century domestic settings in Western New York. The evidence of wars can be discovered from their fortifications. Over many centuries these sites have been picked over by thousands of ancient and modern people. The scale of conflict may be unknowable because so much is gone or what remains is no longer in a context which allows for a systematic analysis. Much of what the Nephites left behind in Western New York may be within the limits of small sites where there is likely more information concerning their domestic lives than their military conflicts. Artifacts from these sites will likely show connections to the Nephites of Ohio in arts and crafts within the framework of families and villages. In these domestic sites there was a unifying culture among the people. It was likely that religion was the “glue” that held them together in these domestic sites. There may not be much evidence within the context of domestic settings which would affirm that a “state” or “empire” held them together. It will become clear that the Nephite culture came into Western New York from the river valleys of Ohio. It will also become clear their culture disappeared in Western New York by the late 4th Century.

The research will help us understand what other scientists are currently investigating in this area. There are millions of historic specimens which are under the control of universities, local governments and private individuals. Gaining access to these collections may be one of the richest sources of information concerning the Nephites in Western New York during the 4th Century.

The research will select suitable archaeological sites for investigation and will organize volunteers. Volunteers will be involved in the field and will experience a bona fide excavation under the direction and management of professional archaeologists. The project will provide volunteers with full details, including in-depth project description, project size, age requirements, academic credit availability, information on accommodations, bibliographies, and more.”

SENSYS Research at Stonehenge

“Stonehenge is one the UK’s most visited tourist attractions – and one of the world’s most enigmatic ancient monuments. People come from all over the world to stare at the iconic stone pillars and wonder how, and why, they were put in place.

The site may be instantly recognizable, but there is far more to it than first meets the eye. As archaeologists study this area, mystery after mystery unfolds. But a coherent story may be beginning to emerge.

That has been particularly true over the last decade. Researchers have been studying not just the monument itself, but the area around it, hoping to find clues in this intriguing landscape of prehistoric monuments.

Underground imaging and excavation have revealed that Stonehenge was once part of a complicated network of structures: ancient burial mounds, unknown settlements, processional routes and even gold-adorned burials. The finds paint a picture of a far more mysterious and elaborate Neolithic and Bronze Age world than previously thought.” SENSYS GmbH Rabenfelde 5, [email protected]

New Era in Book of Mormon Research
Large in Size, Significant in Location
It is Time to Get Serious About the Historicity of the Book of Mormon

When it comes to the large landscapes of the ancient world the Europeans have taken the lead. Scientists in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, and Slovakia have done things in archaeology which Americans are only beginning to understand.

There is a book which reports on five years of work on sites from all over Europe. Papers were presented at the conference “Sensing the Past – New Approaches to European Landscapes”, held at the Goethe University in Frankfurt from 24th – 26th February 2015. Click here for a free PDF copy of the 125-page book which reports on the conference.

This book gives detailed information about remote sensing and surveying methods currently being used in Europe by archaeologists and cultural heritage professionals to explore, document and manage large landscapes. The book is connected to the heritage of ancient Europe. The book offers case studies as an important part of the LBI ArchPro research program. The book gives theoretical and practical developments related to archaeological landscape prospection at an unprecedented scale and resolution,

The Europeans have already demonstrated that it is possible and affordable to acquire high-resolution data across large areas. These areas are now measured in square miles rather than acres or square feet. In combination with modern interpretation techniques, these approaches herald a new era for the archaeology of the Book of Mormon. Taking the experience of the Europeans as a starting point, it is no longer necessary to use excavation as the first source of information for archaeological research. The setting for the Book of Mormon involves more than a million square miles. With this new technology, it is possible to start on large landscapes in Ohio where Nephite settlements were the cultural centers of North America in the 1st Century.

Our plan is to start in Chillicothe on Monday, July 16th. Come and see how modern technology from Berlin will begin to open our understanding of Book of Mormon lands. Stay tuned for more details.

Research Guidelines

(1) Our collection of data sets from the Heartland will use the highest standards and best methods of modern-day technology.
(2) The focus of the research will be the discovery of evidence of indigenous people who occupied the Heartland.
(3) The research will be objective and unbiased. The results will be placed on a wiki for the whole world to see.
(4) Questions or speculations concerning who these people are and from where they came will be reserved for additional studies where researchers will be free to use our new data sets.
(5) We will have data sets which are richer in detail than anything which now exists or which anyone is contemplating for these lands.
(6) Calvin Hamilton will take the lead in developing the protocol for the release of the data sets to the worldwide web. It may take a year before anything becomes available.
(7) We will use these guidelines in our discussions with people who may want to know what we are doing and how we are moving forward.

Protocol for Site Selection and Acquisition for Survey
by Richard D. Moats, Project Archaeologist
Heartland Research Group

Purpose:
The intent of this document is to provide the specific guidelines for the selection of lands which offer a reasonable probability for producing positive results of a magnetometry survey.
Positive results meaning the discovery of unknown features below the plow zone created by pre-historic cultures which inhabited and utilized the landscape. The features may include unknown long term habitation sites as evidenced by fire-pits, storage pits, structural postmolds, and sub-surface burials. Other features, relating to “ceremonial”, burial, and “belief system” practices, include linear features created by mounding earth such as circles, squares, and various geometric configurations. The identification and location of previously known but lost features is also considered as positive results.
Another intent of this protocol is to define specific procedures for securing the selected sites to be surveyed from the land owners, i.e. the farmers, while prescribing to the Research Goals and Guidelines of the Heartland Research Group. The prime directive being the honoring of the land owners rights and respect for their livelihood regarding land usage, crops, and livestock. Without the cooperation and respect from the farmers, there cannot be no ongoing research.

Site Selection:
The focus of site selection is to maximize the likelihood of finding features relating to activities conducted by indigenous cultures primarily the Hopewell. Therefore, all sources of information must be considered.

Site selection is the responsibility of the Project Archaeologist, “PA”. This individual selects sites of their own accord but must consider all sources of information to include Mill’s Atlas, archaeological papers, books, input from the land owners family history, and previous surveys.
Input from avocational archaeologists and surface hunters and members of the Archaeological Society of Ohio must also be considered.

When selecting a site for a magnetometry survey, the terrain is a major concern. Flat terrain, such as cultivated field are the ideal in regards to equipment capability. High weeds are much more problematic. Brush and wooded areas and terrain that is not tillable is outside of the equipment capability and will not be selected for high speed magnetometry.

Long term occupation sites are larger than nomadic encampments, hunting camps, and flint reduction sites. These sites will generally be on the second and third terraces above the annual flood plain. Long term occupation sites can be defined as an aggregation of fire-pits, storage pits, and dwelling post-molds consistent with Woodland, Fort Ancient, and Mississippian Cultural associations. Long term occupation sites will be on the third and higher terraces above flood plains and on relatively flat and level terrain. They may be close to or in view of known burial mounds, earthworks, and hilltop enclosures. They will be close to a source of water particularly near the confluence of two or more waterways. The region will have been productive for food sources such as fish, birds, animals, nuts, and grains.

Undiscovered large geometric earthworks and long linear features similar to “roads” will be the panicles of discovery. They will be found above annual and five year flood plains and relatively close to the long term occupation sites. Relatively close meaning within a two miles and within long distance view. Hilltop sites are rare. There must be some “evidence of presence” of a site on a hilltop such as Mills Atlas before it is selected for a survey.

To maximize the probability of discovery, large tracts of land must be surveyed. Landforms which fall into the prescribed parameters must be surveyed between grain crops and with minimal disturbance to the farmer. The “Sensys” system is conducive to high speed surveys and is the key to the project’s success and will maximize land coverage with minimal impact on the farmer and land. Once a site is selected for survey, it must then be acquired from the land owner by contract.

Acquisition of the land:
Once a tract of land is selected, the Field Operative, “FO”, will be notified and given the details of the selection. The FO will then be responsible for Acquisition of the site from the land owner by completing a contract and defining the time of year when the survey will be conducted.

Large tracts of land will more efficiently produce results. However, once features are identified, it may be necessary to expand the area of the survey to encompass all of the site features by going to an adjacent farm and land owner. The key to making efficient surveys is the speed at which the Sensys equipment can operate. Once a data stream is completed, it will then be processed by a designated interpreter for imaging. When the imaging is complete, the results will be sent back to the FO to be given to the land owner.

In order to maximize the efficiency of the FO, multiple sites must be selected and contracted. This will insure continued operations throughout the year and on a five day per week basis. Weather and other variables must be recognized and considered for the operations of the FO. Equipment maintenance and travel times must also be calculated into the schedule of the FO.

An Everlasting Decree:Ensuring A Title to Liberty

It is true that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no position on the geographical setting of the Book of Mormon. This is a wise position for the Church to take amid the tumult of opinion. However, an understanding of the responsibilities of those who dwell on the ‘land of Lehi’ becomes paramount to the temporal and spiritual salvation of the occupants of the Promised Land.

This is especially true if it is realized that the “Gentiles” that came out of captivity, are specifically addressed within the text, and came to the same land to which Lehi was led.

If the location of the Book of Mormon cannot be identified without question from the text itself, then the prophecies and promises about that land and the people who will live there in the latter-days, are of little value.  Many say that it doesn’t matter where that “Promised Land” is, but if that is true, then why did the prophets of the Book of Mormon spend so much valuable time and space to include the deed restrictions to the land promised to Lehi and his descendants?

Bruce Porter, An Everlasting Decree

The Book of Mormon…

1- Contains the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

2- Is the record of a fallen people

3- Is the “deed restriction” for the Promised Land

While the first two messages are directed to the world and the saints, the third and final message is connected to a specific Promised Land, forewarning and instructing those would live on it in the latter days on how to maintain the freedoms that have been set up by God for those fortunate enough to be brought to it.

The Book of Mormon prophets saw our day in vision and knew of the Gentiles who would be led “out of captivity” to this sacred and covenant land.  It is to these Gentiles that the warnings were given, hidden up for the scattered “remnant” to receive from those Gentiles who would occupy this same land in the latter days.  Within this record are the restrictions and stipulations placed upon all those who are so blessed as to live on this chosen land of liberty and whom have a sacred responsibility to bless the nations of the earth.

Some claim that “it doesn’t matter where the Book of Mormon took place.”  However, if the “Promised Land” is not properly identified, then the associated restrictions, blessings, and responsibilities cannot be understood nor can the prophecies and promises in the text become a guiding light and a warning to these latter day Gentiles, which was the purpose for their inclusion by the ancient writers.  The physical location of the land of promise is significant and essential to the spiritual and temporal security of those who are to dwell on the land.  Heeding the warnings and the attendant spiritual awakening to their awful situation as envisioned by the Book of Mormon prophets is the only hope for mankind.  This sacred book of scripture contains not only the story of the “Everlasting Decree,” but actually becomes, in the hands of every honest reader, the Title to Liberty for the Promised Land.  Watch Bruce explain the primary concepts behind this amazing book in the video below!

Friend and Heartland Scholar Bruce H. Porter speaks on location at the Plymouth plantation about his critically important new book, An Everlasting Decree: Ensuring A Title to Liberty For The Promised Land.  Get your copy of the book at the Bookstore.

Bruce co-authored the book which outlines the scriptural basis for the Heartland Model Research, Prophecies and Promises, with Rod Meldrum and has significantly added to it with his recently released book An Everlasting Decree: Ensuring a Title To Liberty For The Promised Land.  The Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the Gospel and is a record of a fallen people, but it is also very importantly a message to all those who will inhabit the “Promised Land” in the Latter-days.  It is a prophetic promise and a warning to those who would occupy the sacred lands of the Book of Mormon and their obligations and judgements should they allow “secret combinations” to overcome them and thwart them from fulfilling their destiny, which is to bless the nations of the earth.  The Book of Mormon contains the  ‘deed restrictions’ that continue to exist upon the Promised Land; a very important message to all those who will inhabit the land of Lehi in the Latter-days.
